The sound at the start is very much like the sound a blast tube makes when heard from the blast end, every imperfection inside the tube reflects some of the shock front back to the source making a strange roaring sound.

Antimissiles technology.. where it can pass, happens the shock wave. The missiles avoid defended zones, looses time then becomes the target. If not returned to the slammer..

Not really lots of down time it takes months to set up the experiment for 5 seconds. then days and weeks of checking the computers and the result. I know I worked there for 36 years. If you ar into computers it would be a good job.

I assume the shockwave imaging uses a random, but very high contrast pattern and then measures the apparent distortion?

Multi-layered reinforced/backed waves, the original wave would be distorted giving inaccurate data.

Are they using an event camera or is just a normal camera and image analysis?

I don't understand what the difference is between the upper and lower images in the last sequence. I see that the velocity is lower in the bottom one but are they two different experiments?

In the last clip after the end of the tube the background looks like mountains, and maybe a parking cone..? why is the shock wave “gathering” around the outlines? Or is that part of the tube? It’s hard to tell.

I think they are monitoring the pressure waveform analysis from the frontal wave. The visual distortion is analyzed by pixel changes, and they have a computer program, which records these pixels, simply my changes to the actual video.
As far as how the pressure wave was recorded inside the tube, I’m sure they have a huge string of sensors inside this tube, but likely video as well to measure changes in refracted or reflected pressure gradients. The rest is simply modeled here by a super computer and backwards analyzed.
I’m sure there’s a lot of AI in there as well to calculate the waveform.
One thing I don’t see modeled is the ripple affect, as the pressure did change or modify the shape of the tube along the path.
You can see the primary and secondary pressure waves along the path, which is impressive.
What’s missing is the initial explosive velocity. I’m sure the initial detonation velocity was around 6000-8000 ft per sec, because we are seeing the shockwave at the end of the tube.
      /end geek talk.

Wouldn't sensors staggered at increasing distances from a central blast be more accurate? Isn't a blast into a tube similar to water speeding through a hose of decreasing diameter? I'm a nurse, not a scientist.

You want decreasing measurement intervals downgradient. The shock wave velocity is decreasing as it moves down the tube.
