Martha IS very much THE companion of Season 3. This season starts a bit slow but with the next ones, a two parter, it starts getting better and then the end block Id say from episode 8 on is real great. Epsode 10 is THE highlight, so look forward to that.
Billy, I love this episode! Even back in 2007 it was a topical story. Who hasn’t been stuck in a traffic jam on a motorway/freeway for hours on end, going nowhere? Imagine being stuck, enclosed in a metal coffin (with recycled air) for 24 YEARS? This story is so full of hope for the characters in it, with the Doctor and the Face of Boe saving the day and with a nod back to an old 2nd Doctor Who enemy from 1967. What’s not to like if you’re a fully paid up Whovian member, right? No spoilers, but you will be drip fed more information about the Time Lords and the Time War throughout this season and beyond. Again, no spoilers, but the Doctor meeting the Face of Boe for this, the third and last time (as he said it would be) is very important to this season. You’re right, the stakes have risen for this season, budget wise and story wise, and those stakes rise even higher from episode 8 onwards to the finale (not that there isn’t some good stories before episode 8) and Martha is most definitely the new companion, as you will find out soon. Loving your reactions to this season and can’t wait to relive these upcoming stories with you. Best wishes from the UK. 🇬🇧
The Macra are technically a deep cut from the classic series. Before this episode, their only onscreen appearance was a 1967 story called The Macra Terror, which is basically lost media (There is an animated reconstruction, but there wasn't in 2007 when this episode aired). In that story, they're an actual presence and threat like the Doctor describes. It really feels like the writer just needed a monster, but didn't care which, so he picked an obscure one from a missing story from the 60's as a joke, claiming they'd devolved to get around the fact that they're behaving totally differently from their first appearance.
That’s not true. In the original story, “The Macra Terror,” the Macra fed off of the gases that was generated by the people at the camp, so for them being underneath thousands and thousands of cars belching out petrol/gas fumes 24/7 for the past 23 years, must have been manna from heaven for all of them. Using the Macra for this story was ideal. Here, using CGI, we only needed a presence from them, as the Macra in the original story were massive and unwieldily on the Doctor Who set.
I think this episode aired in the US the weekend the last Harry Potter book was released. I remember taking a break from reading it to watch (probably on VHS that I taped the night before when I was in line to get my book.) I’m not positive if that’s all true, but those two things are intertwined in my aging memory. But I do remember enjoying this episode. Especially Murray Gold’s fantastic music. The next few episodes are not my favorites, but I’ll watch your reactions to get you the views. But from then on, you’re in for the best run of eps in the entire series, in my opinion, that carries you through the 4th season. I’m looking forward to seeing your reactions.
Heads up. I heard that in Great Britain, if you do a reverse peace sign, with your fingernails showing, that is an equivalent to a middle finger. This may be a reason tge Dr. WHO audience has dwindled.. 🤔
While it's true that this gesture is the equivalent to a f you in the UK. I can also assure you that it has absolutely nothing to do with any dwindling numbers.
Kind of. Two fingers is more of a general f you, one is more of a ruder up your a. British swearing and gestures are complicated, so good luck researching that 😂
I heard the old-timey origin of the “reverse peace sign” (as an offensive gesture in the UK) is that it’s the hand position required for shooting an enemy with a bow and arrow (the figurative equivalent of wishing death upon someone). That said, I’m American, so this could just be some story they tell tourists 🤷♀️

Yes! I’ve come to realize she is and I’m happy about it!
Martha Jones with 10th doctor in Doctor Who series 3
Marca was a monster in Doctor Who series 3 gridlock
I love that final scene! It makes me tear up.

Rose Tyler and Mickey Smith and Jackie Tyler are not in Doctor Who series 3 and because 10th Doctor have Martha Jones
I prefer Mickey Smith and Rose Tyler from Doctor Who series one and two
