My generation were so lucky. (I’m 61). Some stonking great tracks in the ‘60s and ‘70s. We had Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae, Funk, Philly, Stax , Northern Soul, Southern Soul, Fusion, Blues, Club Disco, Punk, Post-Punk, Two-Tone, Acid Jazz, Hip-Hop etc. Part of our history and nostalgia.
Who knew?… I just discovered this n 2024 when looking for the original 70’s version. I heard a jazz version what made me want to hear the original so I went looking… I didn’t know there’s quite a few renditions of this song.
I will forever remember Maria Muldaur's version of 1974; I had just purchased my first car, a used '66 Mustang. This song was in the top 10 then, and on good old 'top ten AM radio', it was in heavy rotation playing many times a day. I spend every spare minute, just cruising the highways, enjoying that car, grooving to the music. I would put 44,000 miles on that car the first year I owned it; that means I drove an average of 120 miles EVERY DAY over that first year. Of course, many days were many more miles, I just loved driving that car. I was 17 when I bought it in '74. I kept it until 1979, and sold it for the same price as I bought it. Tan 66 Mustang GT, with the hi perf 271 hp v8, and it even had a/c, a rarity in those early Mustangs. I link so many memories of that car, with this song.
Wow...How did I never know of this young lady? She should have been a gigantic star. I may like this version of Midnight at the Oasis more than the original. Beautiful voice and just absolutely full on groove and energy. It doesn't hurt that she's gorgeous. This gal should have been the next Diana Ross....Maybe she was and I've just been living under a rock. Any music supervisor worth their salt would put Brand New Heavies version of 'Midnight at the Oasis' into a film.
I was eight when this song came out in the 70s. I remember talking to my mom about the camel! 🤦🏽♀️ Still listening 50 years later. So different but well done Brand New Heavies!
The first time I heard this song was on American Pie. A cover band played it during the prom scene. And childhood-me could not get over the "cactus is our friend" line 😂
I like listening to The Brand New Heavies' sound, and mixed with "Midnight At The Oasis" a song I also like listening to increases my appreciation exponentially! Why are all my favorite musicians across 'the pond' in the UK?
The brand New Heavies rendition is the definitive version there is. Ndea's voice just makes it perfectly complete. Its a super groovy track with a solid beat and rhythm ❤ Somehow i imagined the video would have been more of a desert setting as befitting, not this style they opted for....😅🎉
Yeah, this was the peak of the Acid Jazz era. 1990-1995ish, with 92-94 being the peak years. Jamiroquai, Brand New Heavies, Incognito, Young Disciples, Galliano, Stereo MCs all added to the sound.
I bought Jamiroquai's debut in 1992, and BNH's Brother Sister in 94 ─still have the CDs. You nailed it! PS: Still a fan of both bands, although I miss N'dea in BNH.☺
For some reason I woke up with this song going around and around in my head even though I haven't heard it in donkeys years, so had to come and listen. For me, this is definitely the best version of the song. So much funk, so much groove, no wonder it was a dance floor filler. Cracking tune! 👌
Nice cover you all. I know the song very well. A little back story. Maria’s guitar player wrote it. Most didn’t initially didn’t want to record it for the album. But it made it and ended up being a hit.
Now that the boys are back together we might finally get the Oasis cover of Midnight at the Oasis. "Oasis, "It's midnight at the oasis, "Cactus is our friend, "Put your camel to bed... Sung to the tune of Wonderwall for some reason...
Ndea Davenport had a great voice, really suited the band. Didn't she leave just after the mid 90s? I remember the BNH having a different singer in their later tracks.
They don't do a half bad job of rescuing this piece of bad 70s cheese. I still think the original will end up in a Tarantino movie eventually. I like this, though, almost in spite of the song.
Ndea Davenport, great singer, beautiful woman.
The original will always sell better
WOW , I forgot how good this tune was back in 94. Good Times ❤❤
Amazing days ❤
1974
A beautiful woman with a perfect voice !

I am '71 and I stopped my music education after 2000.
A stunning remake of a classic that's being rediscovered.😎😘

It sounds as good now as it did then I still think n'dea has got one of the best voices of our generation.
N’Dea Davenport has a beautiful voice 🔥🔥
Growing up as a little girl this video was iconic to me- I wanted to be this lady in red! 😍😍
I like listening to The Brand New Heavies' sound, and mixed with "Midnight At The Oasis" a song I also like listening to increases my appreciation exponentially!
Why are all my favorite musicians across 'the pond' in the UK?

Love this remake! Wow, what a song and all the moves! Wished all the radio stations would play this!
For some reason I woke up with this song going around and around in my head even though I haven't heard it in donkeys years, so had to come and listen. For me, this is definitely the best version of the song. So much funk, so much groove, no wonder it was a dance floor filler. Cracking tune! 👌
This is when there was good music still
Although I know of this song, it's only taken me 30 years to view the video for the first time.
This is a very good cover, love the sax and the singer.
Ironically I saw a video of the original singer singing this and she was awesome. I'm sure she appreciated this cover if she was still with us.
TIMELESS MUSIC ❤
Still awesome 30 years later. ♫ ...now let me hit _Replay_ 😉
lovi it track the best
Classic ❤

Now that the boys are back together we might finally get the Oasis cover of Midnight at the Oasis.
"Oasis,
"It's midnight at the oasis,
"Cactus is our friend,
"Put your camel to bed...
Sung to the tune of Wonderwall for some reason...
Bedford Oasis swimming pool played this pretty much on loop in the 90’s
Woooo lets goooo!! 🌎✌️🤩

Diva N' dea devenport
Better than the original! ❤
Ummmm...
No question, the vocals especially.
The brand new heavies did a much better version of this song in '94 than the original version, in my opinion ❤❤🎉🎉
💯🎯
Ndea Davenport had a great voice, really suited the band. Didn't she leave just after the mid 90s? I remember the BNH having a different singer in their later tracks.
😁💥
Yowsa!
Courtney on horns nice
Not a patch on Maria M's 1974 original, but still pretty good!
July 2024
They slayed it and we mean killed it. In other words, this version blows
They don't do a half bad job of rescuing this piece of bad 70s cheese. I still think the original will end up in a Tarantino movie eventually. I like this, though, almost in spite of the song.
The original was better. This is good.
