There's an old A&W in my hometown. They still bring your food out and hang it on your window. If you go in to eat, you order your meal on a telephone at every table. Really good stuff.
I wish they would return to the old formula. They use to use sugar, not frutos and corn syrup. That gave it a more smoothness and the head of foam was greater. The foam would actually stay on your lip when you drank it without a straw. I spent the last year trying to find that experience I remember from the 1960's and 1970's. I have tried dozens of brands and I've come to the conclusion it does not exist any longer.

It is hard to find now and I don’t even know if it still available. I have drank most of the leading brands shown in the video. My favorites as noted were the smaller craft type of sodas. We have Hanks and Franks soda fairly available in the Philadelphia area and both of them are great old fashion full flavored root beers. I also found a root beer made by the beer brewery that also has a soda line from Utica, Ny. that is available at my beer distributer. It is higher priced but is a real rich flavorful root beer. 🍺 I also like root beer for the fact most are caffeine free so I can enjoy one at night and still can get to sleep. So try one and enjoy a full flavored soda that has many varied tastes depending on the brand.

As a kid in the 60's the family would go to northern Wisconsin to my grandfather's cabin for 2 weeks in the summer. A 5-hour drive. My favorite childhood memory. About halfway there we would always stop at an A&W in Rhinelander WI. for a mug of A&W Root beer another cherished memory. A&W is the best.
@@endrankluvsda4loko172 Found some at costco, but not all costco might have them. 1/5 in my area had them. Also found some sold as single bottles at upscale grocery stores.
1919 Root Beer is my favorite. You used to be only be able to get it in kegs, but now they have cans as well. It’s so much more smoother than the soda of other root beers.
I agree! Used to get it only around Christmas or on tap at the 1919 stand at the State Fair, , but I think they've finally figured out it's a gold mine and you can get it all year round now.
Most definitely frosties was best :-) can still get it at my local grocery store limited supply in throw back bottles:-) tgey dint stay on the shelf very long
A&W restaurants are strangely more popular in Canada than in the US. For some reason I've never seen an A&W in the USA, but they are quite common here in Vancouver, second only to McDs
they have them but aren’t very good. I also went to an A&W in British Columbia and the food was average but the thing that upset me is that they literally had no ice for your soda. I don’t know why they had no ice machine, I complained to the staff and they couldn’t do anything.
Barq’s is number one in my book, followed closely by IBC. There’s also a brand sold at tractor supply I don’t remember the name of, but it tastes similar to Barq’s so I like that too.
My dad got me to loving that root beer early, partly because his pet name for it made me giggle fits when I was a kid. He called it "Barf's" and I've never stopped thinking of it that way to this day, over 50 years later.
@Dstinct yep, the ice cold mug. It was such a great idea we started doing it at home. All our original A&W's are gone now... Last one we went to in Modesto was forced to shut down last year, it had been there since the 50's.
When you asked what root beer I thought of it was Hires. My go to root beers are A&W & Mug because they are generally available everywhere. Next up I'm game for craft root beers. There are a lot of breweries that make root beer in addition to the IPAs, Stouts and Porters.
IF you can get some Sprecher's sodas you won't be disappointed. Unfortunately I do not know how common it is outside of Wisconsin where we can get it in many stores and even at Farm and Fleet...
A&W Canada and US are actually 2 separate chains now, has been since 1972. The logos are different and restaurant menus are completely different. Same great Root Beer I believe.
Canada A&W is way better all around than any here in the US. That goes for the food as well as beverages. Speaking from across the border in Washington state.
@@loraawalker3618 yeah in Canada AW is like the highest quality fast-food. It's more expensive but everything is awesome, and their root beer is the best fast-food soda by a mile. Like they said uses cane sugar, no ice, comes out super cold. I was shocked when I visited AW in Denver one time and it was all cheap hot dogs and none of the 'usual' menu items I was used to.
@@damendred1 Was on vacation, heading to Halifax, Nova Scotia on my way from MA. We were going to be late so we hit an A&W outside of Moncton. Within 1 minute of ordering, our food was ready and I was dreading the greasy mess we were about to eat. The burger was perfect, the fries were incredible and the root beer amazing. And I know there's a ton more in Canada than the US these days. We have 1 in RI and used to have 1 on Cape Cod. Out in the western US, you can find some really good A&Ws. But not consistently.
Wow, great historical background! I grew up near Stockton, California - just south of Lodi, where A&W originated. Everyone has their own preference, but for me nothing can compare with the taste of A&W from a frosty mug at an A&W Root Beer Stand “back in the day.” 😋 I like most of the brands available, but I’m partial to Hanks Root Beer these days.
I loved this brand and type of root beer. I used to be able to find it but lately have not seen it. I tried it just because I always heard about that type of soda in old western movies. It is something you either would like or hate. It is very flavorful and has different taste compared to regular root beer that is made from different root tree types and blended differently depending on the brand.
There are so many great brands of Root Beer out there. In the last year, my grocery store began carrying "Bulldog Root Beer" and it's some of the best I've ever had, comparable to Sioux City Sarsaparilla. I highly recommend trying it.
I grew up in Canada and have long loved A&M. That said I have now lived in 8 US states and the only softdrink I still drink on rare occasions in Root Beer. I now live in the Indianapolis metro area and can say with some confidence that a local place brews its own root beer, and I have never had better. The place is called Mug-n-Bun. It is not carbonated, but it is soooo good. It is almost floral in taste. Sadly, you can only get it at the resturant. But if you love root beer and find yourself in Indy, don't miss it.
If I am going to drink a root beer, I am willing to pay a little more for a smaller batch product. I love it when a brewery makes a root beer. They will use cane sugar instead of the HF corn syrup that the commercial brands use. Abita Brewing in Louisiana and Saint Arnold Brewing in Houston both make a fantastic root beer.
You can still find Dad's I believe. I seem to recall in being sold at a specialty soda pop store in Lincoln, Nebraska, but I must admit that was the last place I saw it after not seeing it for a very long, long time.
I went to Idaho with dad in 1969 , when I was 10 years old , and we ate at an A&W drive-in restaurant where you ordered into a speaker and they brought the food out to your car on a tray that hung on your window. They had the best root beer floats , hands down .
Root beer and ginger ale did originally contain low levels of alcohol, which is why they were carbonated. Low levels of alcohol, hence the term SOFT drink. The carbonation came about as a reaction between sugar and yeast fermenting. The fermentation process is shorter than beer, ale, wine, etc, with higher levels of alcohol. Even today you can brew your own soft drinks at home. Home brewing suppliers like Norther Brewer sell the ingredients. I have made root beer and orange soda at home this way.
In my early days, my big favorites were Hires and Dad's. We could only get A&W at the A&W burger drive ins. The closest one was a bit far away and we could get one when we went to visit some relatives. Then later, in the 70's, it was available in grocery stores. A&W has been my favorite thing for a long time.
I wonder who or what your conservative overlords will have you hate on next? I still remember when Fox News had your kind tossing Keurig Coffee makers out your windows 😅 I'm not a fan of hers, but I don't waste my time hating on some kids singer
I remember A&W drivins with their Papa Burger 🍔, Mama Burger 🍔, Teen Burger 🍔 , & Baby Burger 🍔 . They were all great. Especially with a tall frosty Mug of A&W Rootbeer. Those were the days. How many of those Mugs never made it back to the kitchen???
Me and two people taste tested 20 different root beers a few months ago. Blind taste test. A&W came out #1 for each of us, but I have to say, it was closer than I expected. Mug really put up a fight, and so did some store brands. Barqs is so distinct from the others, but is so good. So I can say with confidence A&W is the best, but there are others that are fantastic too.
I absolutely adore A&W cream soda. It's so sweet so you can't drink it all the time but if you habe it out a glass bootle of pour it into a chilled pint glass it has a foamy head on it like a pint of beer 🍺. Delicious 😋
Surf City Root Beer was made by a brewery in Huntington Beach,CA. It was actually a place where people could make their own beer. Brubaker. The brew without a business, but. Brubaker still sells the root beer! It’s very good! Cane sugar, not too carbonated or sweet!
Caffeine isn't forbidden in the LDS Church or Utah. There are caffeinated drinks in every store and BYU' big drink sponsor is Coca Cola. Avoiding caffeine is as much a health tip as anything else. Like "don't eat too much fast food". Barq's just provides it for people who don't want caffeine in it. I had a can of Coke at a church event a few weeks back and no one slapped it out of my hand and called me a heretic. This is a stereotype.
Beat me to it. It's the tea plant and coffee bean that's "forbidden". It's not a stretch to assume that the high caffeine content is a reason for that, but caffeine is not in and of itself forbidden. Many Mormons consume caffeine in soft drinks without a second thought. Some families do raise their kids to avoid it more specifically, like mine did, but like said above it really was about health. My father was adamantly against caffeinated drinks, and raised me that way, but the argument was always one of health over anything else. That said, if the choice is between getting two root beers for a church event or party, and one has caffeine while the other doesn't, Utahns would likely pick the caffeine-free one because it's just easier. It isn't as though there aren't many options for caffeine-free root beer to begin with. That said, I don't think Barq's is very good anyway. Mug is fine, A&W is amazing. And IBC isn't bad.
@@neomage2021no, not true. We don’t drink coffee and tea. That was what began the idea that we don’t drink caffeine. Even some members of our church interpreted it that way, but it was never actually true. I go to the temple regularly and drink Dr Pepper.
Barq’s was the very first soda I ever tried. I was eight years old when my mom offered to let me try some. It was love at first sip. And I remember there was a message printed on every can by Edward Barq’s great grandson. I felt as if he were speaking to me personally. I’ve since tried other root beers and sodas through my years and most have been good. I agree with the verdict that A&W is the definitive root beer. I love its sweet flavor and it never fails to please me. Barq’s flavor is also unique and it will always hold a special place in my heart. ❤
A&W has been our familiy's go to Root Beer especially when you can get it tapped in their restaurants. Unfortunately there isn't one close to us these days.
I am in agreement with the store bought A&W being subpar to the fountains at an A&W stand. They are the top of my Root Beer preferences, my store bought bottled (not canned) is Barqs. In truth I have not tried IBC or some of the other names you have on your sample list. I'm still looking for that taste I had in 1965 in Avondale AZ A&W Rootbeer stand I was 17, we would hit that stand about once a month from 62-66. When I left home and started making my way as an adult.
*Diet IBC Root Beer* was always my favorite. As a non-drinker, that was my "I've had a horrible day and need a drink" drink. None of the stores near me sell it any more. I was forced to switch to Diet Dr. Pepper, which isn't sufficient. 😭
Point Root Beer, from Steven Point Brewery in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Tried it once when we were up there, and nothing beats it. The best. We're lucky enough to get it in Illinois. It's always in my fridge.

My Aunt and Uncle use to bring a cooler full of Frostie root beer and Olympia beer when they came to trout fish when I was a kid. I miss Frostie, only got it when they came to visit because it wasn't available in our stores near home. Hires was my go to when I didn't have any left over Frostie. I miss both those good ole brands. A&W is way to sweet.
Yum! Dad's!
hires root beer until recently , was still a thing .
Dad's Old Fashion Root Beer.
I remember this always being the best root beer I've ever tasted but haven't seen it in years.
@@endrankluvsda4loko172 I found some at costco 20 miles from home
ehh!
@@endrankluvsda4loko172 Found some at costco, but not all costco might have them. 1/5 in my area had them. Also found some sold as single bottles at upscale grocery stores.
The best ! was about to comment that and saw this
❤ Hires was my favorite root beer
1919 Root Beer is my favorite. You used to be only be able to get it in kegs, but now they have cans as well. It’s so much more smoother than the soda of other root beers.
I agree! Used to get it only around Christmas or on tap at the 1919 stand at the State Fair, , but I think they've finally figured out it's a gold mine and you can get it all year round now.
I like Frostie.
A&W actually stands for "Amburgers and Woot Beer"
Lol Allen and Wright. I like yours better.
"ahtdogs and wootbeer
No, it stands for Ameriburgers Won.
how many people still alive got this reference? lol. its not kfc..
Weely?
A&w in cans is nowhere near as good as from a tap in the root beer stand
I grew up on "Frosty" root beer.
*Frostie
I find the bottles sometimes when I am treasure hunting.
A favorite for sure!
Me too.
@@johnthomson3248 typical trumper , hating on anything Canadian
@@johnthomson3248 hmm odd I actually like A&Ws tho their burgers and chicken are pretty solid and ofc their root beer
@ No? just wanted my ice. my grandparents and father are Canadian citizens, do I hate on them? Absolutely not.
A person that knows their root beers is educated enough for any job position in my books 😂
Barqs number 1 right here
Same, Barqs is pretty damn good. IBC is nice both for the flavor and being served in a glass bottle.
Teddy's?
Frosty, Sioux City Sarsaparilla, and Dog N'Suds are my favorites. Excellent stuff. Only SCS is widely available, unfortunately.
Yes from a boy born in North West Iowa.
Frostie root beer is the best. Hands down.
I miss Hires
Of all the cheaper commercial brands, Hires was my favorite.
Back in the day and A&W had root beer on draft in an ice cold mug. Nothing beat it back then, and nothing can beat it today.
Still does as all my local A&Ws. No ice in any of their drinks because all their mugs are frosted when you dine in.
@Dstinct yep, the ice cold mug. It was such a great idea we started doing it at home. All our original A&W's are gone now... Last one we went to in Modesto was forced to shut down last year, it had been there since the 50's.
My favorite is Hire’s. But you can’t find it anymore, except in extract form.
Some local yokel brew pubs and craft micro breweries nowadays are making some pretty good root beers. Good video.
"Not Your Fathers Root Beer" is my favorite and it's 5.9% abv! Highly advise trying
Good stuff indeed
Yes, great stuff
Good stuff. A few years ago there was a jump in adult root beers, and Coney Island root beer topped my list. Sadly, they don't make it any more.
That stuff is terrible. Far too sweet, taste "flavored", just terrible...
Hmm disagree. It tastes worse than regular root beer and worse than regular beer. Kinda like the worst of both worlds
Mike's hard root beer is really good
@@damendred1 Was on vacation, heading to Halifax, Nova Scotia on my way from MA.
@@derbagger22 My wife and I went to a Shaker Heights, Cleveland area A & W and to our amazement, it was just like an Ontario A & W.
My favorites are Barq's and A&W. I tried Virgil's once. Not sure if they have other varieties, but the mint flavor really puts me off.
I love them all. Always been a big lover of Root Beer.
Not once did you mention dads root beer.
Dad's 2020s is not common. Big Lots sold it.
Henry Weinhard Root beer, Cherry Cola, Vanilla Creme and Orange are the Best.
It's all about Sioux City Sasparilla, The Grand Daddy of root beer.
To me sarsaparilla and root beer to two different items.
@cisium1184 either way, referring to it the way I did keeps it ambiguous enough to work.
I remember bringing a pack of IBC to middle school to share with my friends, and I felt like a king 😊
For me it was always hires root beer and I wish we could still buy it
A&W is great but Dad's will always be a treat.
No love for Dad's root beer? That's my go-to whenever it's available.
I haven't seen DAD's since the late 90s
My favorite bar down the street still sells it in glass bottles
I like the A&W rootbeer stand which serves footlong chili cheese hotdogs and rootbeer !😊 The rootbeer is served by the frosted mug or a gallon jug.
Henry weinhard makes root beer too and it's pretty good.
@@nubreed13 it's delicious, but too sweet for me
1919 Rootbeer from Schell’s brewery in New Ulm, MN is the best by far!
red ribbon is also great if you can find it.
The one root beer that I miss is Dad’s Root Beer, it was really good and they even had a root beer float novelty ice cream
You can still find Dad's I believe. I seem to recall in being sold at a specialty soda pop store in Lincoln, Nebraska, but I must admit that was the last place I saw it after not seeing it for a very long, long time.
Dad's is few & far between but it's still out there! They've got a store locator on their website.
Dad's can be found at Cracker Barrels.
I like this voice over talent. I like her better than the new guy that sounds like a great value version of the old guy.
If you live in southern Minnesota, you know that 1919 root beer is the absolute best, straight from a keg!
Ooh that sounds amazing!
The best by far!
Yes grew up in NE Wisc. 1919 is the best. Used to buy it by the gallon from the bar.
I live in southern MN and 1919 is good, but I prefer Sprecher. Costco sells 24 bottles for $20 and it’s really good
I went to Idaho with dad in 1969 , when I was 10 years old , and we ate at an A&W drive-in restaurant where you ordered into a speaker and they brought the food out to your car on a tray that hung on your window. They had the best root beer floats , hands down .
A&W is at the top of my list for commercial root beer, but I love the crafted root beer from BJ’s Restaurants.
That stuff is some of the best root beer I've ever had.
I used to work at the 3rd shop in the chain and their root beer is dangerously good
Yes! 🙌 Those toffee notes really set it apart!
I remember attending Shakey’s Pizza as a kid and getting an A&W Root Beer. We no longer have Shakey’s in New Mexico, but we love getting an A&W.
Barq’s Special Red Cream Soda is the apex of civilization
Root beer and ginger ale did originally contain low levels of alcohol, which is why they were carbonated. Low levels of alcohol, hence the term SOFT drink. The carbonation came about as a reaction between sugar and yeast fermenting. The fermentation process is shorter than beer, ale, wine, etc, with higher levels of alcohol.
Even today you can brew your own soft drinks at home. Home brewing suppliers like Norther Brewer sell the ingredients. I have made root beer and orange soda at home this way.

FAYGO ROCK AND RYE
In my early days, my big favorites were Hires and Dad's. We could only get A&W at the A&W burger drive ins. The closest one was a bit far away and we could get one when we went to visit some relatives. Then later, in the 70's, it was available in grocery stores. A&W has been my favorite thing for a long time.

I went there all the time for the pork tenderloin sandwich or the Coney dog
How about Frosty?
A&W is my favorite drink. A nice cold glass with some pizza is the best.
I'd buy A&W on occasion. Cream soda too.
Yes!
Delicious 😋
❤
Sort of. They are free to choose, but in order to qualify for temple worship or baptism they cannot consume caffeine.
@@jaketachermusic954 Ah thanks for the info, so it's more about the hot drinks part and not really caffeine
@ well, it’s specifically those drinks. I enjoy herbal tea and hot chocolate all the time as well.
Faygo root beer is surprisingly good. Them and Barq's are my favorites.
A scoop of vanilla ice cream for the win.
A&W is everywhere in my city.
It’s fire at the restaurant. The difference between that and the canned version is like fresh squeezed orange juice to frozen.
Henry Weinhard's. I buy it at Stater Bros.

*Diet IBC Root Beer* was always my favorite. As a non-drinker, that was my "I've had a horrible day and need a drink" drink. None of the stores near me sell it any more. I was forced to switch to Diet Dr. Pepper, which isn't sufficient. 😭
