analog obsession is definitely underrated imo, can't believe the quality of plugins that you could get for free and they sound just as good or sometimes better than the paid counterpart.
I have to say for me in both cases the Lala sounded better and I actually picked the Lala in both blind tests. It sounds to me as though there is just a tad more clarity and punch although I don't really know how to describe what it is. Although they are close for me the Lala is better but the fact then that it's free and has a bunch of extra features makes it the clear winner overall
Hi great video! I just noticed on the vocal demo, the HIFREQ/FLAT adjustment on the CLA was not set to flat, allowing more HI's to come through. Easily overlooked, not criticizing! Thank you!
The LALA makes the bass a lot more rounded in the low-end. I think the CLA-2 tends to add brightness when the LALA makes the low-end richer... Thanks for the demo btw
Sonicaly they are very different, cla-2a is cleary has more harsh top end, while lala always smooth things out and give a certain body at the low mids. As long as teletronix la2a is tube based lala sounds more like the real thing to me
on vox I liked the Waves, but felt the LALA was more transparent, but really liked what the Waves was doing, on Bass though, I felt the LALA won easily, the Waves seemed to suck loads of low end out, and it almost sounded out of phase in a strange way. I'm maybe being hyperbolic, but out of phase is the best way I could describe it (maybe very middle phase issue) I have the LALA , its a great compressor, and on this test I preferred it to the waves overall, because I really did not like the Waves on bass
I love Analog Obsession, but CLA-2A is more real, more like if it was recorded in hardware, LALA is muffle or less true, don't know how to explain it. LALA should work on transients but in the end the config could be not the same exactly and maybe LALA can reach that point.
Great video series. Thank you. I'd wish you would compare the AO plugins to other brands than Waves. Imo Waves has crossed their good phase a long time ago and their age of algos can't be compared to new (good coded) stuff. But anyways, great video for getting a picture of the AO sound.
What company would you feel serves as a good comparison. I just have a lot of waves plugins that I personally purchased and so to me it makes the most sense to compare it to waves. I’m open to ideas though.
@@SoundcastStudios There are some great LA2A/3A emulation from Softube (Summit based), BlackRooster (Warm Audio based) and an excellent one from Overloud which seems to be original based.
Imo the vocals were a bit flatter on the lala (not necessarily a bad thing, just... Less dynamics overall). The bass sounded better on the lala though, it seemed more "smooth"? Hard to describe but it just sounded a little more controlled. Either way, I'll echo what others have said, AO is a clear winner here given that it's free!
I compared these two and didn't like the release on LaLa, sounded way too pumpy for me. So it was Waves CLA-2A for me and I kind of like other AO plugins. Btw, the brightness you're hearing is because you have the little rotary button (one labelled "HiFi"/Flat") in the middle, you should turn it all the way to flat.
Yes I noticed that Lala was "breathing", the release time on CLA-2A makes it sound more natural. But maybe that can be useful in some applications, maybe throw it on a vocal and the little nuances will cut through the mix, who knows...
I tried them by myself and can just tell, that the waves gives more color.. The release time on waves is on point. The release time of the LALA is a good way faster. Both of them sound good. I think this goes to waves. But in the case that this is a free plug-in it could also be AO
@@SoundcastStudios Really? It doesn't seem to be that way... The hi freq/flat knob on the CLA-2A looks like it is all the way turned to the left, which means it's the complete opposite of the setting on the LALA. Not really a fair comparison.
dude, I’ve ether done far too much acid OR your video is in 8 bit sh*t mode. BUT I’ll keep listening. Edit; I agree with your opinion, LALA seems brighter, which isn't necessarily that bad depending on what you're mixing
But who is going to listen to these elements in isolation anyway? It's only how they sound/make you feel in that particular mix that is important. And we have no clue about that 🤔
I'm debating which one of these to cop right now. The CLA-2A GUI is god awful compared to LALA. AO wins that one. Both sound great. The only thing I'm wondering is if the LALA has zero latency like the CLA-2A which is a big one for me because I like recording with effects on.
That is one of AO's strong points. He designs most of his gear to be really efficient. I use them for guitar tone with other amp sim VST's and they work perfectly 'live' The TubePre sounds awesome post I.R to give that analog flavour that a preamp gives to a studio mic, and the SPECOMP is great on the D.I channel before the signal is sent to a pedal VST or amp and I.R VST. I've found the latency to be minimal.
the lala is definitely the better of the two..it gives the audio an extra slab of thickness i find and im glad i didnt buy the cla ..nothing against waves but this lala is far from blah blah
analog obsession is definitely underrated imo, can't believe the quality of plugins that you could get for free and they sound just as good or sometimes better than the paid counterpart.
I am enjoying the plugins greatly and looking to make more videos with them. Stay tuned
Shhhhhhhh!
I'm use to using uad la2a plug ins, was surprised how good lala sounds
I wish I could put it up against the UAD version but sadly I don’t own the plug-in.

I completely agree with you
Hi great video! I just noticed on the vocal demo, the HIFREQ/FLAT adjustment on the CLA was not set to flat, allowing more HI's to come through. Easily overlooked, not criticizing! Thank you!
Your voice is very clear! I like it
Thank you!
both Studio One and Analog Obsession are top-shelf
Sibilants on the LALA sound a bit harsher. It rules on the bass, however--you'll hear it in the mix compared to other LA2A vst's.
hmm interesting analysis
Yeah that's what I've heard as well
Cla on vocal, lala on Bass. I hear a big difference on bass!
The LALA makes the bass a lot more rounded in the low-end. I think the CLA-2 tends to add brightness when the LALA makes the low-end richer... Thanks for the demo btw
Picked the LALA in both instances. Excellent test!!
Thanks!
Love the comparison format!
Thank You! Great video.
Great comparison. Guys be sure to subscribe to AO's patreon at least for one month so you can give something back. He's doing an outstanding job.
The LALA GUI is so beautiful
I definitely use the LALA regularly! Big fan of AO!
Still very much a go to for me
Try the new update!
Great video bro thank you

I’ve never used a real la2a so I can’t say but I like them both
Analog obsession compressor
The "Flat" knob position on CLA and LALA is different, so they sound different

i really liked the LALA and it recently got an update that made it even better
@@SoundcastStudios Yes, LALA2 sounds better. LALA one is a bit too much sometimes, a bit cartoonish on bass, but still useful.
U spoke my mind
Thanks for the video. How do you like Studio One La-2a emulation which comes with the fat channel?
I don't like it too much. It doesn't seem to give that subtle saturation other la compressor plugins give.
Wow the LALA sounds a lot more natural on vocals. It sounds better on bass as well.
Was the saturation already on the track or is that all the comps?
I don’t know. I didn’t track the song.
Sorry
@@SoundcastStudios oh, thought maybe it was there solo’ed and bypassed, my bad.
@@mlwsf i do show the track without compression though
@@SoundcastStudios so it's there before. Cool. Must have missed that. Thanks.

I’ve heard real la2as warm up a bit cause it saturated so maybe that one is more real? Just a thought

You should compare to newer lala version that behaves exactly as la2a compressors .
That’s a good idea
Oh, you forgot to try it with the studio one la2a stock compressor.
On both samples I like the A example

You gave me an idea. I should run a test analyzing the even and odd harmonics of both plugins.
@@SoundcastStudios this is exactly what I did. I ran a sinus wave threw the compressors and looked for the harmonics.
@@HabibiTommy98 and the waves had more harmonics?
@@SoundcastStudios yes
@@HabibiTommy98 you are absolutely right. I just checked it today and the Waves has like double the amount of harmonics. Very interesting.
the HF/FLAT knobs weren't position the exact same and didn't look like it was doing as much GR from the meters it looked like

Luckily I don’t. That sounds like it would definitely startle me. Do you have the latest version?
ig the analog obsession one adds a little more color to the vocals compared to the waves one, still really close

CLA is more smooth. : )
Really? I thought the AO was more smooth
But AO is free, way better than daw compressor anyway.
Lala doesn't sound as squashed
It sounds very natural
pretty sloppy bass playing leaving strings ringing like that
agree the AO is drastically better on the vocal, very natural, immediate and lively
Your testing methods are flawed oh, you have not posted the actual sound of the track prior to the effective sound
the lala is definitely the better of the two..it gives the audio an extra slab of thickness i find and im glad i didnt buy the cla ..nothing against waves but this lala is far from blah blah
I wanted to like la2a better, but cla won both times
works out great for you if you already have the CLA
