I was stationed at SX 1957-1965,during the good old days of steam' and diesels starting to creep in.SX was in a sorry state then, but compared to these pictures, it was heaven. And steam, though in decline, was reasonably plentiful. The diesel shed was being built after pulling half the jubilee down.Drivers assistants in those days would have been firemen working on special-odd, with plenty of WD's and knocko's etc. wanting the fire's cleaned, and then prepaired for their next turn of duty.Plenty of grime and ash flying about, especially if the engine had no drop-grates or rocker bar's etc. and all done with a slice, bent dart and pricker.Moving up from the country, to get my firemans check, and lodged at the Ilford hostel for nine years,I loved every minute of it.Then electrification and the diesels came along and spoilt it all.I managed to get my driving check, but found life with D's and E's so uninteresting and like a fool I packed it all in.Going on strike in those days was just that, six weeks with ASLEF strike pay was hard going too.How many of todays footplate staff would have stuck it?Those were the good old days!
I worked at BREL Temple Mills East London from 1977 till 1984. I was a shunter. Drove those old diesel engines several times. I didn't know it then but they were great day's!!
I used to go there trainspotting in the late 70s.We used to go there. Finsbury Park. Hither green. Willesden. A few of the main line stations. Kings Cross when the deltics used to rule there. Brilliant memories.
As a lowly spotter, not a worker, I used to love Stratford back between 75 and 83, ish ! If we were daring enough as kids, we'd walk along the tunnel into the depot. What a fantastic range of locos. I have loads of stills but no footage. Used to be 03s there back then and one or two other older things, made into departmental vehicles I think. A big thanks to all the workers there who never threw us off. Stratford is a prime example of where we went wrong with our railways. Nice vid, keep them coming !
Yes, it was a creepy walk through that tunnel! There used to be class 15s in use as steam heat carriage units along with an ex toffee apple class 31/0. And always locos on tick over, even on Christmas day!
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus I might even have a picture of it. We live in a different World now. The lunatics definitely took over the asylum and I'm not sure we'll ever get back what we've lost.
I went to the Open Days there as a kid, never thought I would be one of the last mobile shunters/ ground staff to come under SF, before it went round to Temple Mills.
Yes, i also went to 3 open days at SF. And years later took locos on & off the shed. Plus also had to learn that new plastic depot at Temple Mills, more like Lea Bridge as it was nearer the Lea Bridge Road!
The place was always of interest especially when the DRS was open. After it had closed, at one time it had a lot of RFD 47s stored in there. Happily one of my Dad's friends was a Foreman in the Running Shed and of course had the key! Getting to nosey about was never a problem for me at this depot!!!
That was very dismal looking place back then, quite sad really, but all good things someday come to an end, so I'm glad I experienced that shed in the good times..Thanks again, Regards Chris
Amazing how attached we get to these loco's, all over the country filming them, great memories now if nought else, thanks for sharing one of my favorite locations when i was a lad early 1980s
My Dad's friend was on the engineering side and i used to get visits around the place quite regular, he would even unlock the DRS Workshops and we would go round there as well at a weekend. Happy days.....
great memories of stratford, all gone because of the olympics,i remember the class 31 over the edge at staples corner, i was driving my old l/rover at the time, also remember in the 80s a class 31 down the bank near Hanwell in west london. was at southall railway centre at the time
Yes, i rememeber the runaway's at Cricklewood. One was cut up on site, the other brought back to Stratford and hung around there with a broken frame for a while before it was cut up.
you could always tell a non-30A loco was on the GER - it looked so scruffy in comparison. Even the station pilot at Liverpool Street was always immaculately turned out. Great video again.
I remember a very well turned out green 08 at Liv Street as the pilot back in the late 70s....as well as all the silver roofed and flag wearing 47s......
Interesting. Brings back memories of walking through the staff pedestrian tunnel to the Depot! Hard to believe Westfield Stratford + more now sits on this land.
I grew up in Newham and the Stratford i knew has long gone! I even remember as a small child standing by the church where the buses would stand and watching the blue & silver trains over at the station! So that was before the shopping centre was built.....
Rodney isn't far off completed now. It has been through a thorough restoration at Arlington fleet services at eastleigh. It is being made main line ready.
I can't thank you enough. I was a drivers assistant at Stratford depot 1978.-1983. It is so sad to see it on its death throws. I could tell you a few stories😅. May it rest in peace. 😒😢
I do have more vid from SF shed to upload-happily. I did work locos off there back in the late 90s and some ex SF men came to Ilford CS after the partial closure
I started as a cleaner in 1975, passed cleaner within a fortnight and driver within 3 years. First link Temple Mills 08 hump shunting. Still have my rule book signed by Inspector Clem Britain when I passed the rules exam. Did you go to the MIC classes run by Graham Isom ?
Very sad and of course it's all gone now. I visited once in the early 70's when it was fully operational. That tunnel from the station was quite daunting for a 14 year old and seemed to go on for ever!
Excellent video! Interesting to see 47542 there with in such a sorry state. Bristol Bath road was my depot for a few years, think i can remember seeing it there! Look forward to seeing more videos. 👍
It's getting on for 20 years now since they demolished the place, i still can't believe what was there when i walk through the shopping centre that now stands there.....
My pleasure. I thinki have some taken in OOC where they also had withdrawn locos lingering around for years. I'll see what i can find. Have you seen this one of mine at March, lots of withdrawn Peaks? ruclips.net/video/ic6_Mdmqi1w/видео.html
worked there from 79-81 as drivers assistant, len and jack stannard were the foreman my brother was there also, he was involved in a crash at temple mills where two drivers were killed , he was the d/ assistant
Seem so sad these lovely , Machines worked so hard in the day all the places they must’ve travelled all the miles now waiting for the final mile from being dismantled to the scrapyard sad 😞
@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus Yeah pass there a few times got some real old Rollin Stock stuff going back 20 years ago still parked up on the sidings definitely worth a look if you’re interested
I'm not sure what is built on Devon's Road shed but i suppose you go shopping (or drinking in Tap East bar!) in the Westgate Centre and try and imagine happier times!
I loved the sound and look of the 20's My favourite of all
33 & 73 too
At 3.16, that's the Liverpool Street pilot, in full Great Eastern blue. Stunning..
All those lovely locomotives. Makes me when to go back 40 years. Thank you Soi.👍🤩🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🚄🚅

33038 holds the record for the longest waiting wreck of all.
I have more from Stratford, both the depot and station.....
Yes, it was almost a permenant feature of Stratford....
Weedkilling train first up, good catch.
Just a bonus it being in the area that day.
Truly a sad sight . But I’m glad it’s been recorded for posterity. Best shed ever on the eastern region !
There was always something of interesting lurking there especially with the DRS at the back, anything could (& did!) appear...
DRS ?
best shed full stop for me , the pride they put into their engines, those 47s that were always looking amazing, loved SF and i am a midlands lad
My uncle was a driver there (john head) many times I snuck away in the cab, great memories.

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbusI remember seeing pictures of the silver roofed 47's.
A great but depressing video - it captures the end of an era.
Yes, SF was a shadow of itself by then but clung on until 2000!
It’s ok it’s only a train

Great vid, funny to think that 2 of those 3 Class 50's were later saved for preservation.
Yes, it's funny how things turn out. I thought all those here would end up at Rotherham!
Rodney isn't far off completed now. It has been through a thorough restoration at Arlington fleet services at eastleigh. It is being made main line ready.
I've driven a few of these locos. I was at Stratford from 95 to 97 as a spare driver doing ballast and engineering work

Superb video, we had such amazing variety of engines, vast rail network. Shame its all changed now
ill was coming down staples corner in kellogs lorry saw two31s s over the top ,yes good times then
They rolled away along a siding, supposedly the hand-brakes failed although there was rumour of a sacked Secondman taking them off.....
great video i wish they would run all them classes more often in kent 😀👍
I'll have to upload some of my Ramsgate Days Out footage where IC X-Country used a pair of 31's once and an odd 37 and such like.
Sadness all around, but fond memories x.
