    I was stationed at SX 1957-1965,during the good old days of steam' and diesels starting to creep in.SX was in a sorry state then, but compared to these pictures, it was heaven.And steam, though in decline, was reasonably plentiful.The diesel shed was being built after pulling half the jubilee down.Drivers assistants in those days would have been firemen working on special-odd, with plenty of WD's and knocko's etc. wanting the fire's cleaned, and then prepaired for their next turn of duty.Plenty of grime and ash flying about,especially if the engine had no drop-grates or rocker bar's etc. and all done with a slice,bent dart and pricker.Moving up from the country, to get my firemans check, and lodged at the Ilford hostel for nine years,I loved every minute of it.Then electrification and the diesels came along and spoilt it all.I managed to get my driving check,but found life with D's and E's so uninteresting and like a fool I packed it all in.Going on strike in those days was just that,six weeks with ASLEF strike pay was hard going too.How many of todays footplate staff would have stuck it?Those were the good old days!

    I worked at BREL Temple Mills East London from 1977 till 1984. I was a shunter. Drove those old diesel engines several times. I didn't know it then but they were great day's!!

    I used to go there trainspotting in the late 70s.We used to go there. Finsbury Park. Hither green. Willesden. A few of the main line stations. Kings Cross when the deltics used to rule there. Brilliant memories.

    As a lowly spotter, not a worker, I used to love Stratford back between 75 and 83, ish !
    If we were daring enough as kids, we'd walk along the tunnel into the depot. What a fantastic range of locos. I have loads of stills but no footage. Used to be 03s there back then and one or two other older things, made into departmental vehicles I think.
    A big thanks to all the workers there who never threw us off.
    Stratford is a prime example of where we went wrong with our railways.
    Nice vid, keep them coming !

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  4 года назад

      Yes, it was a creepy walk through that tunnel! There used to be class 15s in use as steam heat carriage units along with an ex toffee apple class 31/0. And always locos on tick over, even on Christmas day!

      @@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus I might even have a picture of it. We live in a different World now.

    I went to the Open Days there as a kid, never thought I would be one of the last mobile shunters/ ground staff to come under SF, before it went round to Temple Mills.

    • @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus
      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  4 года назад

      Yes, i also went to 3 open days at SF. And years later took locos on & off the shed. Plus also had to learn that new plastic depot at Temple Mills, more like Lea Bridge as it was nearer the Lea Bridge Road!

      @SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus  5 лет назад +1

      The place was always of interest especially when the DRS was open. After it had closed, at one time it had a lot of RFD 47s stored in there. Happily one of my Dad's friends was a Foreman in the Running Shed and of course had the key! Getting to nosey about was never a problem for me at this depot!!!
