Joy Division played at the Trinity Hall in 1980, about a month before Ian died, they played again as New Order some two or three years later. I was at both gigs.
This was on ITV News West Country, regional South West News, on Thursday July 18, 2019. We pre-recorded the interview at the Avon Gorge hotel ahead of his soundcheck. Bernard was totally charming, very natural. Very eloquent and funny. He seemed genuinely excited to be in Bristol. New Order also allowed us to broadcast live into our 6pm show from their stage as their support act, Lonelady, set up. That was class.
Great place to be interviewed. Good to see he was smiling for a change. I remember seeing him putting petrol in his car at Wimslow, garage in the 1990's? My mate decided to follow him around the roundabout for a bit, until he went into another direction. A few minutes later on the same day, we were sat in the car, outside some shops on Cheshire. Bernard, drives past and parks infront of us. We just sat there for about 10 minute, until Barney came back to his car. My mate, got out his car, and suddenly spoke to him. I remember Bernard, was carrying some books. He had short black hair, dressed mostly in blue. He drove a green 2 door, Sports car with open roof. He was on his way to Bath, to start recording of Republic album. David Smith, who published New order fanzine ' Paradise ' gave Bernard a copy. A memorable day, but I was a bit shy to say even Hello. 😬🎻
That's why he hasn't got anything to worry about in life? Should of left Factory records after Brotherhood album. New order were, one of the best commercial bands to be on Factory label, after James had left. New order were simply struggling to survive and support the financial side of the hacienda club and touring with pressure from Tony Wilson and Rob Gretton ( R.I P). Rob, told Bernard to forget about solo projects and create music for new order. They never wanted to be popstars or, famous musicians. Just to make music and lyrics in their own principles. These days they are still going strong, like The Cure & Echo/Bunnymen. Without Original Bass player Peter Hook. Times change and is another chapter with new members to complete.👏🍷
I don't think he would ever dream of living in Bristol. He seems happy and excited about being there. I believe new order have only played in Bristol twice in the early 80's. Thanks for downloading. 👍
The real truth is that 30 - 40 years ago bands were given up to their 3rd album to be successful, labels were more patient, these days you either smash it consistently from your first single or you're gone
There had been a difference of opinion mainly between Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook about which sort of direction the band should be pursuing. Peter is very much into the guitar oriented sound but Bernard has always had more of a passion for the synthesizers which went against what Peter wanted to do and as time has gone on the relationship between Bernard and Peter has deteriorated and has eventually led to them going their separate ways. It's clear to see in their first studio album since Peter's departure there's a lot more synthesizers. Bernard actually commented about how high the album managed to reach in the UK charts within its first few weeks of release in 2015, which I think helps to prove Bernard right that he knows the type of music that New Order fans want to hear.
Questioned 1) Would they want him back? Answer: No. 2) Why, don't Barney leave, or give up?. I met Hooky, a few years ago at chat with fans event in a Gloucester. Hooky, made it obvious that he couldn't be in the band anymore. Read the books by Peter and Bernard.✍

Did they give you a medal??

I like the way, that the only thing that's changed about Bernard, is his age. I love him 😍
you sure about that? I think he's more of a toff now lol
True, an absolute legend.
Barney is looking younger than he did 5 years ago. Nice.
That's why he hasn't got anything to worry about in life?

What a great guy.
Hes so cute and squishy 😊
Barnie looks like a skinnier William Shatner
That's very true about the short shelflife of bands these days

He's unrecognizable with his hair down and with sunglasses

It's not New Order without Hooky.
It is
@@raph6931 nah, I love them all but they were a bit harsh to hooky
@@rac3502 hooky faked being a DJ and tried to have Gillian's pay docked on Get Ready. I seriously doubt they were harsh to him given his behaviour
Not that old chestnut Hooky left New order when the atom split.
@@raph6931 I thought she wasn't involved with get ready due to her daughters illness?
Many thanks for the upload. Was this on TV? If so, what programme was it on?
White Lion, Bristol
I just wish his voice at live gigs was better. Really "rough" these days.
his voice has always been terrible
when will Hooky come back though
