Hello @Rybonator. Sorry to ask this in this video, but I need your help (please, please, please). Ameralabs AMD-3 is not sold here in Portugal, so I only have the option to buy Elegoo or Anycubic. I bought and printed some miniatures with Elegoo Gray Resin and they just broke into several pieces in one meter drop or so. And in your video, you hit the miniature with a hammer and it stays in one piece. How do you get that?

If it wasn't for things like OPR I wouldn't be considering building any GW stuff past my small art projects. 3D printing is restoring a balance to the marketplace and GW is going to have to add value to keep up which works best for everyone.
Okay straight up Rybonator, I literally just happened to do the exact same thing this weekend with my brother in law who is already a pro at Warhammer! 3D printed a bunch of necrons!
Well, this really helped me in making the decision to be a last minute backer for this KS. I was already leaning toward my direction and you accidentally convinced me I was right.
This is great timing. I have been into 3d printing for a few years now and just the other day a friend suggested that I stop printing useless things (which are actually awesome things) and print a couple of armies for wargaming. Thing is neither he nor I have ever played any such game and trying to figure out where to get the armies, if there are universal rules or specific for each game? army? etc was very daunting. Hopefully you will speak on a few of these things in the next videos of the series because I honestly feel lost.

Counterpoint: (and this IS for people who are willing to splurge on a 3D printer) the Dominion Box Set, which comes with a full rule book, two armies totaling up to 60 models, and rules for all those models, is 150-200 dollars, while the full 3D printer Setup, not counting resin, and with the Elegoo Mars 2, the printer shown in the video, not counting battletomes due to free rule apps like BattleScribe, ends up being $305.99, though, there is a benefit to having the 3D printer too, due to it having much more freedom and unlimited prints, in end, in the short term, you can get 2 larger armies for cheaper, but in the long term you can get way more models at a higher harm rate to you, but cheaper
I started 3d printing minis near the end of 2020 and I cant recommend it. I went from having a couple dozen minis that need painting to a couple boxes. I'm saving so much on minis that I keep printing more and more! jokes aside, the amount of printing i've been doing has made me consider trying out wargaming lol (especially since I backed the vulcan KS and was thinking of printing the armies)
@@insomniacbritgaming1632 Just comparing the resin cost to the number of successful prints lol no, I spent much less on resin than I would havve on minis. I've bought about 220 in resin (and was gifted another 40 worth) and have about I have 76 medium unit packs/individual heroes, 33 large monsters, and 10huge-gargantuan monsters. If I had bought a comparable number of similar sized minis (with lower detail) from reaper, it'd cost me ~$700 (that lowballing their value, the same models I've printed are priced $2-$20 more from vendors selling actual prints). Taking the other costs into account though (1202k from printer, gloves, alcohol, patreons, etc), I haven't broken even yet based on the reaper minis cost. Compared to the retail cost of thee actual models I believe I've already made up my spending considering a lot of what I considered stuff that would be a bundle of like 3 minis for $4 are being sold as individuals and prices mostly start at $7 for the smallest minis, $15 for large, and $20-60 for bigger ones
@@insomniacbritgaming1632 Not even close I would say haha. Resin comes out to MAYBE $1 per mini, but mostly way less. GW minis (if that's your wargame of choice), are FAR beyond that cost.
@@Rybonator and you're getting $1 worth of quality too 😂🤣 unless you are using a $1000 or above printer you're get soft and lacking details... if I want to wargame for cheap... I'll go to smaller scales, or buy from a different company... Mantic make some great undead models and more recently Evil Dwarves...
@@insomniacbritgaming1632 What world are you living in? A 4K printer with high PPI and good resin gives sharp details for way less than $1000. Use that kind printer and print at layer height of 30 microns or less and the quality is equivalent to plastic or casted resin counterparts. Edit: added clarifications.
what is done with scrap resin like the support struts and such? is it just tossed or is there some means or recycling it? be it in conversion or full on reclaiming.
Unfortunately lots of it needs to go to landfill. So far I havnt found any secondary uses for old supports but I guess its limited by imagination. It can't be melted back down but one type of resin im using atm (anycubic eco) can apparently break down in about a month if its ground up and composted
I do want to start painting miniatures as a hobby but indeed, armies can be very expensive just for a try. I am seriously thinking about saving and getting a printer this year.
Love this video, I also can’t wait for the demon army video, I really want to properly start designing my own prints and armies so when I do get my 3D printer I have some custom models to print.
Designing your own prints is such an amazing skill that I am in awe of others for having. I just love looking at models, and knowing how much care must have gone into them. :)
I bought the anycubic version of these two for the same reasons :) , get the wash station machine trust me you will love it :) I am printing a 'Battle sisters' from onepagerules
You just put them in a clear cup of water during curing. Water refracts the light more evenly curing the model. For example if you just put them out in the sun they will cure but they will cure unevenly which stresses the resin, and they will quickly over cure in the more exposed area's. It's like the difference between them being hit by a UV glow vs a UV beam.
I have the start collecting Seraphon all built and ready to paint. My only issue is that they look so... Boring, like just downright ugly to look at save a few. These Proxy's on the other hand look absolutely awesome and I'm actually motivated to print and paint them. I don't know about the rest of you but in order for me to want to paint something it has to be pleasing to the eye even without the paint on it.
Did you have to rescale any of the miniatures to fit the scale of the miniatures for, say, Warhammer fantasy? If so, how did you scale them? I have noticed the minis come out a bit small
The cost seems to match premades a little at the point where you have to find your settings and practice printing, but after that I can see it being cheaper. Especially if you just use regular resin. It's also interesting seeing some of their 'cheats'... like the end of the spear on that lizard tail to save on supports... had an art teacher that would scold for shenanigans like that, but here it works. :P Also, where in 40k are you gonna find lizard men on dinosaurs? C'mon, GW, keep up. -I... I kid because I care...- :v
Haha I totally see the cheats you are talking about! If I was a designer, I would hope nobody saw but me >.> lol. Sigmar has them, but come on 40k, I'd love to have a raptor rider charge a space marine. That's just badass.
My 3d printed 2000 point Seraphon army cost the same as a GW purchased one, including the 3d printer, the cure/wash machine, the resin, the gloves, the STL files from One Page Rules. Basically anything printed now is significantly cheaper than buying them retail.
I purchased th skeletons and noticed you printed ll th hopes men together as on pice . I can't find them in that file format. How do I get those if you don't mind me asking?
Solid video explaing alot of the pros about 3d printers. I love 3d printers if you have even a small creative streak I highly recomend at least looking at 3d printing, its getting easier and cheaper every day! Can't wait to see a full army of demons. Lemme know if your looking for some painting help! I am a decent speed painter!
Honestly this came at a really fun time since a few weeks ago my friend bought a set. I'm still on the fence cuz I'm broke and I prefer fantasy over scifi but as a cheaper alternative and to just play with my friend this seems great
I think it's a great way to find what armies you LIKE, by playing with your friends. Then if you really want to jump in and go to tournaments etc, you can look into slowly getting the regular army :)
@@insomniacbritgaming1632 yes but this way if I don't like it I can turn the minis into dnd figures and instead of attaching the pieces together manually I can turn the 3d printer on and do whatever while I wait. And I still have left over resin to make other minis
@@insomniacbritgaming1632 depending on the game it’s also incredibly unethical as well, bordering on piracy at best. If you like a company’s products then you need to support them. If you don’t like the prices then don’t participate, it’s a luxury hobby, not a human right.
@@ryuudraco592 you could use any miniatures from any company to be a DnD figure, although DnD licensed figures are true 28mm scale... not Heroic 28mm or 32mm... so your argument is kinda redundant. Not just the cost of the resin, what about the cleaning products?
Hey, have you thought about making any tiny dice sets? I love tiny dice and I even have a little keychain dice tube that I can keep a set of half sized dice in. I think it could make a cool video and I have no idea if there are any different things that could come up with making such tiny dice, and I figure you would be good at figuring out how to do that
Once I started 3D printing I haven't looked back! I'll never be ripped off for minis ever again and the models are as good as big companies now. Use them in tournaments too in the UK, not a problem at all, obviously not in official GW events though. There are also more games to play than ever! AoS is poor quality in terms of gameplay in comparison to some, 40k isn't great either. I'm playing KoW, Old World and my personal favourite at the moment The Games of God's. The golden age of gaming is well and truly here.
I never actually had one for the Mars 2 printers, just the mars 1, but they sold out VERY quickly from the first 'print 141 minis in a weekend' video I did
@@Rybonator thats fair. I was like "aww man let me ask! Worth a shot!" Been wanting to get into it, more for pleasure than business or even playing anything. But its a fairly steep price for a lot of their models lol that 4k one looks mighty fine though! Hope youre doing well. Rybo!
@@EmceeTimmyT Thanks Solemn! I hope you are doing well, as well my friend :) I will be giving a printer away in one of these vids in the future, so maybe that'll work out perfectly? :)
I've been hearing and seeing a lot of good things about this resin and the deal. But where are you getting the bottles? Are those just for you guys? From the kickstarter I'm only seeing small bags of it?
This isn't really related to the video but i was looking at amazon earlier for "cheap" dice making stuff and i came up with a video idea thats "making dice from diffrent amazon dice molds/items etc." Kinda like the wish and aliexpress videos but more of a cheap starter stuff based off of amazon since alot of people will check there for equipment
You know I subscribed to you for the Dice Making, but this is definitely content I enjoy. I just got my hands on a Resin Printer so this video is top-notch info. ^,=,^
oh also in legal documents you are allowed to use 3d printed models in official warhammer tournaments as long as you have created the model and it is an adequate representation of the model you are creating a proxy for
Unfortunately, its actually not cheaper to make your own armies vs buying them in Canada. Those Space Marines is almost $150, for two armies and to buy the Elagoo 3D printers is over $500 plus $10 shipping, off Amazon. General rule of thumb, when it comes to the US stuff... take its price, double it, and then add the original price (51+51=102+51=153 for an example for the Space Marines). For one unit its actually 70, but to add tax on top of that 140 for both, its over 150 and I dunno what the shipping would be, if you bought online vs in-store.
Help me rybo-kenobi you’re my only hope! My wife and I just got a elegoo Mars pro and our prints keep lacking detail. We are using black resin and our exposure time is at 12 seconds per layer. Any tips? Would welcome advice from anyone!
So, if you got a mars pro, what type of resin are you using? It SEEMS like 12 seconds is WAY too long of an exposure time, but I could be wrong. High exposure time for the first few layers is advised, but I'd drop that down. On a pro, I typically need maybe 7-8 seconds (but each printer is different.) If the exposure is too high, then it can build up excess resin that clings to the mini. You can always try scrubbing your mini with a soft toothbrush to remove even more excess resin that might be clinging on. Try dropping your exposure time and see if that helps :) Drop the exposure time, and maybe slow the lift speed down.
Oh man, the proxy argument. I've played 40k, Warhammer, and eventually fell in love with Warmachine and Hordes at our little local gaming shop and was really spoiled. Proxying was shrugged off for the most part because there were a lot of younger/poorer teens and young adults in the group and it was often a great way for people to plan future lists. I made really good friends with another Legion of Everblight player and either borrowed his models or proxied until I had the money to buy some bigger models, and it worked out fine because it allowed everyone to play larger games without being restricted. I get the reasoning behind not wanting people to proxy, but it's always been frustrating for me since I've seen firsthand how helpful it can be for getting people into the hobby, or letting people test out lists they might otherwise not be able to try. War gaming is an expensive hobby, and not always super welcoming, so I can't help but wish it wasn't so strictly guarded sometimes.
Proxying in ANYTHING is the easiest way to get people to TRY something. I totally am FOR proxying, but understand that spaces with warhammer tournaments WANT to run only warhammer things, as it's fair for those who did invest a lot of money, and fair for the company that puts things on like those tournaments. My experience however is much more like your own. I feel that is the more REAL world approach to the hobby.
When GWG charges as much as they do for tiny plastic figures that are mass produced, it is *ALWAYS* ethical to make your own proxies. It's just plain greedy.
Really cool video, but kind of confused how it would be unethical to use 3D print proxies, or how it would be unfair to people who bought official models? I get Games Workshop wouldn't want you to use third party models, it's them losing money, but you're not recasting their IP and (if the tournament allowed it) the other players could have bought third party minis too
It's just gatekeeping stuff. The whole point of 40K rules is to make you puke out tons of money for the best armies. Hence many people have a no pay - no play mentality. While in a friendly game as long as it's a cool model nobody cares about proxies. In any kind of official event usually Games Workshop is putting up prize support based on the number of entries. If they get caught allowing non-GW models to be used it can result in them losing that support. Which is why I don't forsee 3D printers taking over anytime soon, and I don't see events being okay with them either. The myriad of events is part of the driving force that keeps GW on top of the heap. It's also the failing of other systems like One Page Rules which I think are neat but you aren't going to find a One Page Rules tournament anywhere around anywhere. That said there are events for games that don't care about the mini's you use. King's of War is a perfect example and both of these forces would make not only cool King's of War armies but they would typically be more welcome than GW mini's in King's of War which does catch people some hate. GW being the devil and all that.
Regarding Proxies in tournaments. What's the issue here? You've still got to buy the books to use the rules for the models just as the other players do. Unless you've got the skills and knowledge in a program like Blender or Meshmixer or whatever, most 3d print models are pretty monopose so you'll end up with units that look the same. Whereas with GW items you can kitbash a lot better. Also, it's condesceding to say "well they bought those models from GW so it's not fair" ... Exactly how do you know they bought those models from GW for full price? They could have bought them off ebay, or from companies like Bitz Box. This hobby is the best thing to happen to GW in a long time. If it weren't for 3d printing GW would be pricing themselves out of the market.
I feel that this is a full view of a game offered by the One Page Rules (As there is a full game as a part of the figures.) And showing that they can be used as proxies - Heck, ROCKS can be used as proxies. But, the miniatures are similar to existing minis, so I do feel why there could be a comparison
I think if GW were smarter than they are they would offer licenses to 3D print their minis (probably for like 20+ bucks a month because GW are some greedy bastards). It would help their company keep 40k going and get people into AoS if it was paired with 40k
I have MANY many thoughts about this. Most of them in line with what your thoughts are, but with some other nuances. I think competition is GOOD for business (see Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo, PC & Mac, etc.) . I think 3d printing is finally starting to be a REAL competition with injection molding, and some companies are going to need to adapt in new ways. But, HOW that will happen, is still up for debate.
The "ethical question" of whether it's okay to use non-official models to play a game is kind of a joke. Take GW, for example... you need to buy around $100 worth of books to play the game. You paid for those rules, so you can use whatever models you feel like using to play the game that you paid for. I use a mix of GW and non-GW models for all their games because I just do not like some of the stuff they put out, and some of their ranges are super outdated.
"It's not fair to those who spent the money on Warhammer miniatures" Yeah, and if I pay more for alternative manufacturers minis than for Geedubs', is it fair to me that they spent less for Warhammer minis? Is it fair if I show up with a fully painted printed army against a grey, primerless, half built group of badly glued models, only because they've spent more? This argument makes no sense.
I hope that those of you who are interested in starting into wargaming enjoy this video! The folks at Atlas are some of the nicest people I've ever worked with, and make a truly great product. One Page Rules also has a super fun setup with their King's Wrath starter set, and I truly think that you will enjoy wargaming if you are even kind of interested in it. :)

LOVE THE IDEA KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
what is done with scrap resin like the support struts and such? is it just tossed or is there some means or recycling it? be it in conversion or full on reclaiming.
Unfortunately lots of it needs to go to landfill. So far I havnt found any secondary uses for old supports but I guess its limited by imagination. It can't be melted back down but one type of resin im using atm (anycubic eco) can apparently break down in about a month if its ground up and composted
We now get closer to the dice made by the Adeptus Mechanicus.
Oh those would be fun to recreate :)
I do want to start painting miniatures as a hobby but indeed, armies can be very expensive just for a try. I am seriously thinking about saving and getting a printer this year.
The only tournaments that would not allow 3d printed models are at an actual GW store or an event sponsored by them. Which only happen at GW stores.
Will you eventually paint these funky little guys?? Id love to see a video on that :)
I will probably do a 'Painting an army in a weekend' video on this series sometime :) I'll have to pick which army to paint!
@@Rybonator oooo sounds great! My vote is for the cool egyptian skeleton army!
GIG'EM!!!
We stan for buddies! 🥰
Buddies Be Best!
I backed them. Excited to try the resin out with Vroom. But I thought the resin was shipping in a bag not a bottle.
It will be in a bag, I just got a review copy :)
I truly think you'll love the resin! And whatever mini you choose haha
I bought the anycubic version of these two for the same reasons :) , get the wash station machine trust me you will love it :) I am printing a 'Battle sisters' from onepagerules
What does water based curing do exactly? Cool video! I have a whole 3D printed seraphon army from OPR
our tournaments allow us to bring them!
Hey can you please talk more about the water curing for resilient prints? I'm interested in finding out more
You just put them in a clear cup of water during curing. Water refracts the light more evenly curing the model. For example if you just put them out in the sun they will cure but they will cure unevenly which stresses the resin, and they will quickly over cure in the more exposed area's. It's like the difference between them being hit by a UV glow vs a UV beam.
I love OPR models, I just wich they had a larger selection of fantasy models.
Ditto- they make absolutely amazing sculpts for fantasy
I have the start collecting Seraphon all built and ready to paint. My only issue is that they look so... Boring, like just downright ugly to look at save a few. These Proxy's on the other hand look absolutely awesome and I'm actually motivated to print and paint them. I don't know about the rest of you but in order for me to want to paint something it has to be pleasing to the eye even without the paint on it.
Gotta try this out
Did you have to rescale any of the miniatures to fit the scale of the miniatures for, say, Warhammer fantasy? If so, how did you scale them? I have noticed the minis come out a bit small
The cost seems to match premades a little at the point where you have to find your settings and practice printing, but after that I can see it being cheaper. Especially if you just use regular resin.
It's also interesting seeing some of their 'cheats'... like the end of the spear on that lizard tail to save on supports... had an art teacher that would scold for shenanigans like that, but here it works. :P
Also, where in 40k are you gonna find lizard men on dinosaurs? C'mon, GW, keep up. -I... I kid because I care...- :v
Haha I totally see the cheats you are talking about! If I was a designer, I would hope nobody saw but me >.> lol.
Sigmar has them, but come on 40k, I'd love to have a raptor rider charge a space marine. That's just badass.
My 3d printed 2000 point Seraphon army cost the same as a GW purchased one, including the 3d printer, the cure/wash machine, the resin, the gloves, the STL files from One Page Rules.
Basically anything printed now is significantly cheaper than buying them retail.
whats your opinion on extrusion 3d printers for mini making?
Those are TombkIngs!
51$ on SALE????
HERESY!!!
I purchased th skeletons and noticed you printed ll th hopes men together as on pice . I can't find them in that file format. How do I get those if you don't mind me asking?
Where do I get that Vulcan resin...its not on Amazon
Aren’t those vats too full? Did you get resin in the ball joint?
Solid video explaing alot of the pros about 3d printers. I love 3d printers if you have even a small creative streak I highly recomend at least looking at 3d printing, its getting easier and cheaper every day! Can't wait to see a full army of demons. Lemme know if your looking for some painting help! I am a decent speed painter!
Thanks Geek :) I may have to take you up on that! I'm considering doing a GIANT paint collab sometime with a bunch of RUclipsrs.
@@Rybonator ya dude that's a serious project, but exciting to think about!
@@Rybonator not a speed painter (at least not yet) but I’d like to say I’ve got a decent hand and I always want to paint more minis.
How many of those printers do you have now?
Haha these Mars 2 printers, only the 2 you saw. But resin printers, I now have 6 overall
3D printing isn't actually cheaper... it appears that way but when you factor in all aspects, it costs roughly the same if not more
@@insomniacbritgaming1632 yes but this way if I don't like it I can turn the minis into dnd figures and instead of attaching the pieces together manually I can turn the 3d printer on and do whatever while I wait.
Nice Ragusea reference
got my mars 2, just waiting for it. How do you clean the printer once the prints are done? not the minis but the actual printer itself? Thanks :)
A question, you cure them into a water glass? Is it water washable resin? is it better to cure them into water rather than in open hair?
Do you still have a running promotion with Elegoo Mars 2 printers?

One look at current Saurain warriors, knights and Kroxigors... And you will also feel jsutified to bring whole 3dprinted army to AoS games
Does this mean you're going to be making more videos about scenery?
Just how many printers do you have already? :D
Hi all if i whant the lizardmen Army how muts its the kost.....
Is it me, or does the detail look softer on the grey resin? Is there a difference?
NVM, I watched it again.
I see tomb king proxies and awesome minis and video
Tomb Kings are some of my absolute faves
@@Rybonator Same, I have a tomb king of old models. Ebay gods smiled on me
Yes, the warhammer 40k. Where you need a spare 40k to dare get started.
for the warhammer books you can easily find free pdf's online. nobody said it was allowed and nobody is telling you to use them. its just a suggestion
oh also in legal documents you are allowed to use 3d printed models in official warhammer tournaments as long as you have created the model and it is an adequate representation of the model you are creating a proxy for
Unfortunately, its actually not cheaper to make your own armies vs buying them in Canada.
For one unit its actually 70, but to add tax on top of that 140 for both, its over 150 and I dunno what the shipping would be, if you bought online vs in-store.
holiday's is the time to buy a elegoo. i got a mars 2 pro for $125
Help me rybo-kenobi you’re my only hope!
Try Lychee Slicer if you aren't already using it. It has some great defaults to get you printing.
yesss!!! war gaming!!
It's a fun thing, that we can finally enjoy again in person with vaccines being widespread :)
any money that doesn't go to gw is a good thing
"Water based curing" What sorcery is this???
Ahem *lizardmen Ahem *Tomb Kings
I dunno why, but odorless resin sounds about as safe as carbon monoxide without an alarm.
No tournament outside of one at a GW store cares if your models are 3d printed.
Wouldn't it make sense to buy one big printer rather than 2 really small ones lol
I found only two reasons why people buy 3D printers: to make Guns and miniatures.
Noot noot
Noot! :D
Demons, you say.... 👀
HELL yeah ;D
I feel a DMCA coming.
I feel that this is a full view of a game offered by the One Page Rules (As there is a full game as a part of the figures.) And showing that they can be used as proxies - Heck, ROCKS can be used as proxies. But, the miniatures are similar to existing minis, so I do feel why there could be a comparison
🔥💕👌👍
"It's not fair to those who spent the money on Warhammer miniatures"
Yeah, and if I pay more for alternative manufacturers minis than for Geedubs', is it fair to me that they spent less for Warhammer minis? Is it fair if I show up with a fully painted printed army against a grey, primerless, half built group of badly glued models, only because they've spent more? This argument makes no sense.
$50 for 10 space marines?! 2 years later, that’s practically stealing the models
