Absolutely brilliant performance, dramatic, driving, full of color and light.

Rimsky-Korsakov had no formal training by the time of this writing (1861-1865). However, he was recognized and mentored by Miley Balakirev, who took it upon himself to teach young Rimsky-Korsakov about all things music. Miley Balakirev gave Rimsky-Korsakov a lot of help in creating this. Balakirev was generous with praise when Rimksy-Korsakov wrote a section well, but also highly critical, yet helpful when Rimsky--Korsakov went wrong.
This is written in the key of E minor. This is very good for a first showing. It is his first work (Opus 1).

I need not much talking. I only know that Rimsky Korsakov is a great musical.

Incredible to think that the 2nd movement of this symphony was finished and played over while the, Almaz The ship that Rimsky Korsakov was serving on as a cadet in the imperial Russian Navy ,was docked in Gravesend Kent. He had to go ashore to find a piano to do so. This bit was later expanded in to a film Song of Scheherazade though the setting was more sunnier than foggy Gravesend. Even more so he couldn’t name all the chords his own admission.

Such genius, you hear the sound of Mother Russia in every note. Greatest orchestrator ever.

    Salutations

Sadly, a good portion of 'Classical Lovers' think of Rimsky-Korsakov as a one-work composer. They know Flight of the Bumblebee, and their knowledge ends there. However, Rimsky-Korsakov is one of my personal favorites, along with Sibelius, Gliere, and Shostakovich.

Good list. I'd add Tschkaikowski and Chopin. If you forgot Wagner it's only because you haven't listened to the finale of Tannhäuser lately!

Well: there IS Scheherazade, which is one of the most popular works in the non-symphonic orchestral repertoire, but you're right: he's considered a one trick pony, which is a gross injustice.

These aren't too horrible. Some pieces composed by a collection of Russians during the 'imperial age'.
