One thing I might have considered, since it was a stab in the dark project, would be to have continued your tape line up the back of the neck and up and over the head stock to the front to continue your red and blue effect on the neck? Seeing how the wood on the back was off center, it would have carried that uneveness up the neck and really made a statement! Just a thought that came to my mind! Good job though!
I've seen that, it looks pretty good. I wound up using the same water based dye that I used on the rest of the guitar and it made this Granadillo look almost like rosewood so I'm happy with it.
In my defense, I drop everything. Poly is nice, but it takes such a long time for each coat to cure, and there's a lot more sanding between coats. With the TruOil I can do several coats a day and build them up to my desired gloss. Thanks for watching!
Maybe you and your viewers will find this info worthwhile: I built a 6-string guitar/4-string bass doubleneck kit from Solo last year and had really excellent luck using a leather dye I always have around for my carved leather projects. The name of the color is Oxblood, the company's name is Fiebings, and they make several different dye colors that should all work well with wood. I also used TruOil, but I got a VERY glossy look by putting eight coats on it, rubbing with #0000 steel wool between coats. It dried VERY hard, too.
Thanks! I've done some leather work as well and have a few dyes from that same company, just black and a dark brown. The dye I used on this one is pretty much the same thing, a water based dye. I could have also kept going with the tru oil on this one as well but I didn't want it to be super glossy.
Cool! I also use their USMC Black dye which gives great coverage. I used both on a leather pickguard I carved for a Squier Strat that turned out well enough to record a 20-second video of for RUclips. A skull and some flowers. I’m currently building (very slowly, though,) a Tele Custom that I’ve painted green metal flake, but will eventually carve a full leather cover for. The plan is to draw something (hopefully) cool to carve into a top, back, and side rim which will all be laced together to cover the entire body. I’ve got a set of Seymour Duncan P-rails loaded into the pickguard it came with, along with enough push-pull pots to take advantage of the gazillions (I think it only, like, six😂) pickup combinations. I’ve used them before and I’m kinda in love with the “P90” sides of those pickups. We’ll see how it works out, but it’s going to be a while - it’s hard to work on my own stuff these days.
Also, In case you’re interested, here’s a link to that Strat with the leather pickguard. I also swapped all the hardware for gold parts, including the custom engraved “Beauty” neck plate... ruclips.net/video/wraS_29_49s/видео.html
Thanks, man! If it has a tattoo vibe, it’s because I’ve been doing that for a long time, too. I’m hoping the Tele kit’s cover looks good too. I’ve also got a Squier Tele Custom that matches that Strat, so I guess I’ll have to do a pickguard for it, and swap out the hardware for gold on it, too. Those locking tuners are really great.
I know this isn’t a new vid. ???when you dyed the finger board with black (or brown ?), did The inlays need any work to bring back to original and look? Thanks JB
WOW that's something. I personally will never do a stewmac again. junk ,there veneers are crap, though this one is solid for what it's worth.and it looks like the solids are junk to. To bad because it may have been a decent build if not for the colors
Thanks! If I had proper painting equipment I would probably do more gloss finishes, but trying to get a good finish from rattle cans in my driveway is such a pain.
I learned in painting class to never use a clean brush (rag in this case), as it will help blend the next color. Might want to give it a shot someday with the stains as well. You're making this a fun, easy project. Rock on buddy!
Yea I recon a used shaving soap brush would be good for that burst reality and at the start before you got right into it looked a bit like a tie dye job I thought was pretty cool kinda hippie styles.✌
Looks like a Grateful Dead guitar. Not sure if that’s what you were going for, but well done. Edit: crap, I commented before finishing the video. Apologies
@@JoePierceMaker I used black shoe polish on a gun stock once. I stripped and sanded then applied the polish. It did look very interesting, more grey than black but the wood pores took the black color well. I intended to use the polish as a stain and finish with an oil. The polish didn't allow any type of finish to stick and it literally fell off the wood and the polish allowed oils and dirt from my hands to penetrate into the wood. Lesson learned...
Thanks, I'm a big fan of Ben and I watch his videos all the time, maybe some of his personality has rubbed off. Is it weird that I suddenly want to shave my head and tattoo it? haha!
@@JoePierceMaker I ordered the "SRP" with some extra specs. Seems to be the best quality you can order without guing fully custom or having to live with a bolt on neck (warmoth)
The first rule of trying something new that is irreversible: "Try it first on scrap!" I would never, ever dump finishes or coatings on a new piece of wood without doing a test piece, or several. You didn't set the neck at the proper scale length (dimension from nut to bridge) so I assume you never intended to play this "art project" anyway. Maybe you'll give it away to your biggest Patreon donor?
I've used these stains on several projects so I pretty much knew what I was getting into, so that was never an issue. But also, you can test something till you're blue in the face and still screw up the job. Worst case scenario, it looks like garbage and you paint it instead. The scale length is fine, watch part 4, I play the guitar at the end and the intonation is great. The only problem it has is a bit of tuning instability from the cheap tuners and plastic nut, which will all be replaced eventually.
I like these videos because they are timeless...woodwork and guitars..both stand the test of time.
Thank you!
Not sure how I came across these videos but I have nothing better to do on a Saturday night but to binge watch them.
Thanks a lot!
It looks like one of those bottles with peanut butter and jelly mix together in a squeeze bottle. I love peanut butter and jelly. Nice job.
That's a new one! Thanks!

I considered doing that, but I got lazy and just did the whole neck red.
Autosol metal polish works nice on the feet board and the frets makes feet board pop just lovely
Good idea, thanks!
Stew Mac sells a black leather dye for fretboards. I’ve used it on a couple of classical guitars, and it makes brown woods look like black ebony.
I've seen that, it looks pretty good. I wound up using the same water based dye that I used on the rest of the guitar and it made this Granadillo look almost like rosewood so I'm happy with it.
I just saw your SG kit build...the staining of the fretboard made me think "life was good", as I stained my 4 kits' fretboard as well.
Nice job!
Awesome, Thanks!
I may not go crazy over the colour scheme but it certainly does give some great ideas into how to tackle a future project. Very different.
Thanks!
Its basically fool proof- as he drops lid! Like the matt look- but likely would have used brush poly if I couldnt spray. Great video!

That body looks a bit like a desert scene, with the sky above sand. Just need a cactus on the tail piece.
Yeah, it does. That would have looked pretty cool.
I realy like how colours turned out, looks great IMHO.
Thanks!
I know this isn’t a new vid. ???when you dyed the finger board with black (or brown ?), did The inlays need any work to bring back to original and look? Thanks JB
It seemed like it stained them slightly at first but when I wiped away the excess they cleaned right up.
Joe Pierce Maker great to know, I appreciate that. M about to do one this coming week.✌🏼
That's awesome.
Looks great
Thanks!
I love the blue burst
Thanks!
I've used paste wax on things and it heats things up and melts/changes the color.
That's interesting. I use paste wax on a lot of things, but usually on top of another finish.
I kinda dig it. Greetings from beech mountain.
Thank you!

If I had painted it instead of staining, it wouldn't have been an issue. For the price I paid I'm still satisfied with it.
I’m in NC too and totally get it with the paint. One thing si do question is why not route the guitar for better contours?
I thought about that but I just never got around to it. I was too excited to get it finished up and play it.
Hy there Sir where can I get those stain paints?
Look up Crimson Guitars, they make them.
Yeah, I voted for purple/blue burst, I got half of what I wanted. Looks great though.
Thanks!
Looks like the album cover from Dave Matthews Band’s “Crash”
Yeah, it kind of does. Thanks!
I love those colors Joe...beautiful!
I, personally, am partial to the glossy look of a guitar body, but that actually looks quite nice.
Good job bro!

I think I would have done similarly with the two mismatched woods... but probably both sides solid because I'm less brave :)
Thanks! I was a little worried, but if I screwed it up I could always sand it down and try again.
When life gives ya lemons, lol. Clever way to address the mismatch on the wood. 👍
You got that right! Thanks for watching!
What part of NC are you from? I am 30 minutes west of Winston-Salem.
I'm about 10 minutes north of Winston Salem. Small world!
I'm just outside of Raleigh. It's great to see fellow NC natives on youtube.
Wet on wet! just like bob ross! love the first backside
Thanks!
Do you remember what kind of blue the strat body at beginning of the video is?
Lagoon from Rust-Oleum
I got an AD on this video. And didnt skipppppp
Woohoo! Thanks for helping me to get rich!
you did exactly what I thought when I first saw the guitar, which was 'he should lean into that split and do a Two-Face guitar'
I'd of had to of done a harvey 2 face chiseled out the wood and gave it a more 3d texture that idea came to me from his batman style headstock
So since I went with red and blue it's like Two-Face and Harley Quinn had a guitar-baby
Looks good, definitely different.
I think so too!
Been wanting to try something like this
It's a fun project and there are a lot of affordable kits out there.
Joe Pierce Maker I will look into that I don’t play but love the look of a nice guitar
Looks like a Grateful Dead guitar. Not sure if that’s what you were going for, but well done.
Edit: crap, I commented before finishing the video. Apologies
Haha, it's ok. Thanks for watching.
Shoe polish never really hardens up. If used on wood, you would need to reapply over time. Also, it doesn't really seal the grain.
That's a good point. It would have to be flexible so it wouldn't flake off the shoes.

@LouisaGuns Oh man, that doesn't sound like fun at all.
You should have done the neck in white so then it would have been along the lines of red, white, and blue it would’ve been the all American guitar !!!
That would have been pretty cool.
looks like Barcelona's 2008/2009 Jersey.
Ah, yes it does!
Mate...just wonderful ! I've had a few beers whilst watching this and i'm cracking up !!
Thanks! I had a lot of fun making this one.
It looks like it was built to play the national anthem or the Texas state song
Now I gotta learn that one!
You could have put a v shaped white stripe down the middle.
That would have been cool.
I've used floor wax before
Interesting. I bet that is super durable since it can hold up to people walking on it.
Superman's underwear... Never seen it but I imagine that's the same color scheme. ;P
HAHA! good one!
I Like it makes me think of AMERICA!
Damn, now I can only play it standing up.
Joe Pierce Maker hahaha 🇺🇸
the head stock would look better if you have reverse blue / red in my openion .....
That would have been cool.
Your camera personality reminds me so much of the crimson guitars dude. Lol. Good time though

@@JoePierceMaker I get it I get it!! Rubbed off as in wax, and tru oil, dye stain (pun).."dont care who you are..thas funny righ there"
If Captain America had a guitar....
Yeah, but it's so hard to keep Vibranium strings in tune.
It realley does remind me of the greatful dead
Me too. Jerry Garcia played a guitar that was similar in shape to an SG as well so that helps.
Lemon oil on the fretboard!! :)
Normally that's what I would do, but since I dyed the fretboard I wanted to use more of a finish to seal in the dye.
Damn I'm so loooking foword to my order from crimsonguitars
Sweet, I'd like to try out one of their kits. I have a couple of their tools and they are fantastic.

Deadheads would say “ He made a Stealie”
Yeah I think Jerry would have liked it too.
So.. what you're saying is "Wax on, wax off"..!
Yes, Craig-san.
You young people watch this guy closely.... This is what you get when you do drugs! DONT DO DRUGS!!!
That's nonsense. Of course the kids should do drugs...
I'm kidding. I've actually never done a drug in my life. I'm weird enough without them.

I really dislike that colour
Which one?
@@JoePierceMaker I probably just have a different taste, but i meant the colours together :)
