Tyre change - BFGs to Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus

  • One key to a lot of fishing is running the right tyres as they decide whether you will get out the track or not. Recently I've been running the famous BFG All Terrain and, in spite of their great reputation, I've been less than impressed with them and wasn't keen to fit them again. With this in mind I've changed to the Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus tyres, it seems these are relatively new tyres from Pirelli and they claim to address many of the problems with the BFGs plus they seem quite well thought of in places where rain and wet stuff is common. From what I can gather they are relatively uncommon in the UK. It is impossible to give a tyre review in a few days or a week but I thought to stick up a little video just showing that I've made the change and maybe highlighting another option that you might not have thought about. There are a goodly number of options in the AT market now and part of the problem is that nobody can possibly give a wide selection of them good use to make a fair comparison so it is very hard to get accurate views. Also I suspect a lot of people buy them for "looks" and their cars are never off the road, further confusing things. Before the BFGs I ran Yoko Geolander ATS tyres, which have been replaced, and found them very good and better than the BFGs in almost every respect (perhaps they were not so robust) but I'm offering no opinion on the Pirelli tyres as yet other than that they are quieter and, amazingly, offer better mpg, than the BFGs plus they feel rather more confidence inspiring on a wet road. These initial views might change in time but if I have any further thoughts I will update you.

I have found them very good on the road and better off road than anything I've tried so far. (bearing in mind we are talking all terrain and not mud terrain) I've had them over a year now and will be looking at them again when it comes time to change as they've done so well for me.

I’m sure they will work fine for you,Philip. They come standard on the finest Italian high performance and luxury cars.In the off road arena they are considered better than Michelin by a smidge.

It will certainly be interesting to see how they go, Pirelli are pretty much completely new in the all terrain tyre market so they are trying to position themselves as "solving" the problems with the BFGs but marketing isn't worth much when you are out a track in the middle of nowhere :-) My one slight concern is the Pirellis may not be as robust as the BFGs as a sharp stony track just chews up the sidewalls of tyres, plus gouging holes in the tread.

I ran BFG KO2s for about 3 years. They were amazing in wet+snow for the first year, but then the honeymoon was over and I was skidding all over the place. I'm on a different vehicle now that needs a new set and I've decided to go with these Scorpion Plus tires in hopes that Pirelli know what they are doing. How did you like these after one year of driving?

Thanks for the comment. I was going to try to do an update video after a year but haven't got around to it but my views are getting more positive with time and they remain excellent on and off road. I spent a lot of today on what the Hebrideans call "peat roads" but are basically home made tracks across the bog. I was just thinking how pleased I was not to be sliding about on the bfgs. All I can say is that I'd not be looking at anything else for a replacement as I'm very impressed plus they are excellent on the roads, allowing for the limits of an unloaded pickup. I hope you get on well with them

@@caorach3354 I appreciate the reply! Got them put on yesterday. I ended up getting 1" closer to OEM size tires from being 2" bigger. So far I just noticed higher fuel consumption (but that's probably from only stop-and-go driving around a few blocks). Will see how these tires do in the famously wet Vancouver fall and winter once our crazy hot and dry spell ends.

So are you getting better MPG now with the scorpions or with the BFG?

I haven't checked recently or done a long term test with the Scorpions so I can't be sure. At first I did think that the Scorpions were somewhat better but I have never gone to the effort of confirming this. I should maybe look into doing that once I start driving a decent number of miles again.

BF Goodrich were always rubbish. I only buy Goodyear or Michelin. Get yourself a set of Goodyear Vectors or Michelin Cross Climates the next time. Snow, ice, sun or rain! No problem!

I'm afraid that normal road tyres simply wouldn't work for me, I'd destroy them in a day as I do maybe 20 - 30 miles per week off the road and stony tracks in particular just chew up road tyres.

@@mediadesignppg Certainly I've been impressed with them so far but I only really have 4 weeks driving on them however almost all of it has been in the wet.
