Can't say anything about burn-in risk when using it for work tho, but atleast text is not an issue anymore.

    A lot of people don’t know this about HDR and it might be an immediate turn off for you. If you enjoy the oversatured vibrant look of images. You might actually hate HDR. As it clamps the gamut to something much narrower. On my new ASUS PG27AQDM. That honey stir scene looks like a dim gold vs vibrant gold on my Acer 270hz monitor. However, if you can find workarounds. HDR WITH HIGHER SATURATION LOOKS GODLY!
    But there’s not a lot of ways to do this so it’s a case by case basis.
    So don’t buy HDR thinking high dynamic range also includes vibrancy, it just means accuracy.

    • @trevorturkin9411
      @trevorturkin9411 Год назад

      100% agree. Coming from even a cheap (NZXT) HDR monitor, the difference is that the image is a lot less over saturated, which so far is actually pretty decent. I haven't had any issues with it either in games or using windows day to day, however it shouldn't be a massive selling point on the low end.

    • @Savitarax
      @Savitarax Год назад

      @@trevorturkin9411 I’ve found the biggest thing that helps if you REALLY need that extra saturation for a multitude of reasons is turn nvidia digital vibrancy all the way up in nvidia control panel. Then use nvidia freestyle/game filter and then the saturation/vibrancy up even more. That’ll get you over the point of super saturation if you are playing a game with stupidly muted colors. Like it almost looks like the hdr is wrong kind of fix.

    • @Skylancer727
      @Skylancer727 Год назад

      Exactly my problem with it. Personally I really like a more vibrant image, I really don't care about color calibration. I mean my monitor came color calibrated and immediately turn on the unclamped color mode anyways. HDR is mainly for those who only like the perfect color calibrated modes as really that's the only place it gains an advantage.
      Plus I'll also say that if you have a dynamic tone mapping feature on your display, on my Asus PG27UQ it's a mix of "SDR brightness" and "SDR Input", it may look nearly indistinguishable from real HDR. I tried both on many games and some like Returnal and Final Fantasy 7 Remake looks completely indistinguishable, I couldn't notice a single difference. Some games I've also noticed turning on HDR actually limits the entire image's brightness in the act of making the brights brighter than the average, but it looks kinda off. Main one I noticed this is Forza Horizon 4. And Final Fantasy 15 actually crushes the darks more with HDR and there's no way to change the dark levels.

    • @TheLinkrules123
      @TheLinkrules123 Год назад +4

      If by accurate you mean colour accurate, that's not really true. You don't need hdr to be accurate. Hdr means a wider dynamic range so bright parts pop more and dark spots are dark at the same time. So in a sense it does make the image more vibrant.
      Also the colour gamut literally is wider than with sdr content that is designed for srgb only

Not only are the good monitors pretty pricey but the requirements spike up as well to the point where even the mid-range flagship GPUs won't be enough. FSR 3 might make a difference, but not to the point where you can play every game on 4K60 HDR10. HDR is great on paper, but the way it is implemented on many screens is awful because the marketing department overdrives the colours in order for you (the potential buyer) to 'see' a difference by making the colours 'pop' .
    And this is why film producers hate HDR on most TV's because people aren't seeing the movie in the way it was intended to be seen..
    instead the TV marketing department is butchering the original work with over bright and over saturated images on screen.
    But the manufacturer and end retailer knows that the average buyer wouldn't understand what HDR actually is (on paper) so they crank the colours up to crayon like levels so the potential buyer 'sees' a difference and parts with their money.

I personally have an Asus PG27UQ which is capable of 144hz, but it's only capable of that with chroma sub sampling. If you want true 8 bit colors you need to pull back to 120hz and if you want 10 bit color it's needs to be 98hz. This is because of limitations of the displayport spec prior to DSC becoming more common. In fact most displays still don't support it.

      There's only a few displays period that are true 10 bit. Just look up how many threads people use literally looking into service menus to figure out which, they are nearly indistinguishable. True 10 bit has ever so slightly more colors, but 8 bit FRC screws with our eyes to make them look similar. Plus the people who say Dolby Vision is better are literally saying they think FRC is good as only mastering displays support true 12 bit color. Hell there's a good chance the display you're using now is FRC and you just didn't know. Hell I saw people even questioning if the LG OLEDs are true 10 bit, I can confirm they are, but the fact the question has to be asked says all.
      I've seen many reviewers and calibrators say how they can't tell the difference either. Hardware Unboxed reviews monitors and some TVs and has openly shown how even in measurements they're almost indistinguishable. I think you're more conflating the issues with the display as an issue with the HDR implementation. It's only as good as the display itself, the way the display reads meta data, the natural contrast and gamma curve, etc.

      The only two issues I have is the screenshot/screen recording thing where most recording software doesn't support hdr properly and produces pictures/recordings with washed out colors and with some combinations of hdr movies/shows and video players the picture ends up very washed out, but after switching to mpv and mpc-be that problem has become basically nonexistant.

      Seems like there just isn't any panel technology atm which can do it all, especially in the budget range. And there are very few monitor models out there without some drawbacks and compromises, unless you go into the absolute high end range.
      That said, going from a 10 year old IPS 1080p 60Hz panel to a decent 1440p 144Hz+ panel can be a revelation for gamers and is a noticable upgrade in any case, even in the budget range.

    Meh... I have one of the early HDR FALD displays and to me it's a total gimmick. I guess if you're one of those cinema snobs who think "everything must be color calibrated" it's cool, but just turning on dynamic tone mapping on my display looks completely indistinguishable. I basically never use real HDR as half the time it honestly has less contrast pulling the brights down or the darks up in the name of "accuracy". I say if you're not a fan of running your displays in SDR mode, it may actually be a downgrade.
    I just wish I could use 10 bit color without HDR in games. I haven't noticed too many games that use it, but I do know that Final Fantasy 15 did have some objects with 10 bit color, most notable being the pink or red chocobo. Still, most games don't really utilize 10 bit color in a noticeable way and my experience is many games look either the same or worse. Forza Horizon 4 for example just compresses the entire image bringing the darks up, brights down, and mutes the colors. Final Fantasy 7 Remake looks nearly identical either way, Returnal also looks about the same, and Final Fantasy 15 becomes unplayable at night as the blacks are crushed yet the brights are lowered ever so slightly. Even worse when some dungeons were already pitch black in SDR.
    And no, recalibrating doesn't tend to fix these much. FF15's controls only affect brights not darks. Horizon does the same but pushing up the brights makes the brightest spots slightly brighter (while clipping) but the image as a whole stays darker. Still this is far more a hassle than I have with just tone mapping basically, "just working".
    I say it's a total mixed bag. In general I say if your display has tone mapping, you're probably better off. I know the snobs will still say "but then my SDR content is too bright", yeah so what? Every display prior to HDR did this in the first place. I think some people are also attributing the qualities of new displays to HDR as if HDR is the reason they're capable of that. I will say my display isn't OLED so I don't get great stars in games and videos, but that doesn't really change much about the general HDR experience.

    ive been using a "low end" hdr diplay (because it is only vesa hdr 400 certified) since 2018 and even if i dont have a premier top of the line platinum experience vs vesa hdr 1400 or more certified displays in the 2000 $ of my currency , it is still miles ahead of the very bad and poor experience i had before . if you want to know what i had to endure , just check up the lg flattron E2250 , it had very washed up colors , worst than my old tshirt who had around 500 + cleaning cycles , had more light bleed than the vegas strip (i could play minecraft and go look around caverns at night (in the game as even during the day irl i could do the same being night in minecraft) with 0 torches and could spot creepers dozens of blocks away with the default 0 brightness level in game and the monitor basic brightness) and by moments had more imput lag than a dude trying cloud gaming with 200+ms while having enough ghosting that luigi could have made a 15 mins episode about cleaning ghost residue off of "looking devices" . the shit was atrocious . so lets say that even if i bought my monitor brand new in 2018 , that it was not the top of the class back then , and costed me near 600 bucks of my country currency , it wasnt just miles ahead in terms of experience , it was like i was on another fucking continent . so comparing the flattron i mentioned before vs the lg 27uk650-W which is a low end hdr 400 4k monitor , it changed my life . but , i will give you reason for one thing . i never use the hdr mode when not playing . even then , i am not well versed enough to calibrate the hdr settings of most games . so what do i truly use hdr for then ? movies and some games here and there . for example , if i play the division 2 without hdr the game just looks wrong . by wrong i means that the colors are literally washed and the game just dont feel right . when i play with hdr enabled it just fine . same with movies really . wit hdr the movie scenes just look so much better and i can guaranty you that i get my dopamine dose that way . same with playing in 4k really . in this very moment , i cant really play anything modern in 4k because of my old gtx 1080 . soon enough i will have a massive upgrade with a 4080 . the games i played in 4k tho , even insignificant they might seems to the general public (eve online , trial fusion to name just them) , they open my eyes to the joy of 4k and how fucking good it feels to have every little details pop in your eyes . so yes . i will also agree that at this very moment , 4k gaming in big indies or AAA open expansive worlds with a first person or 3rd person camera view is still not as accessible as it once was with lower resolutions getting quickly supplanted by higher ones in terms of raw gpu power . an example of this could be 720p which did not stay long and 1080p stayed there a long time because gpus like the gtx 780 then 980 then 1080 could run it for years on end , yes even to some degree with modern titles . tho you can definitely see that it really aint the same exact case with 1440p and now 4k . a modern mid tier gpu might run simpler "indies" games in 1440p for 2 3 years , but after that it wont keep up .
    anyway , rambled enough .
    tldr : got a low end hdr display which wasnt crap or faked its certification , changed my life vs the piece of shit i had before , even tho i cant use it in most games because im not good enough at setting the hdr parameters in many games , use it for movies and some games only , never the desktop . hdr compatibility with screen sharing a very much a thing cause of cant connect to a friend who also has an hdr display when he uses hdr even in desktop mode . dont need to pay for premium HDR 1400 cert at 2000$ to have a decent experience if you have a low expectation .

      I think it only made sense to get a 4K fast refresh monitor for the rig.
      I could only afford a more " budget friendly " if i can even call it that, 4K monitor.

      And i still can't believe i've managed, by some miracle, to upgrade my rig to this level of hardware for the first time in my life.

They have the best color and brightness of all the monitors I have ever owned and not having ever expierenced HDR in my gaming setup, these fit the bill nicely. I know they are a far cry from a $1k OLED, and in a side by side it would be like comparing a 60Hz TN panel from 2005 to an IPS built within the last 3 years, but coming from said TN panel, these monitors are great.
    I also lucked up and got a set that aren't showing any defects like dead pixels, flickering and whatnot (knocks on wood) hopefully this keeps up until I upgrade into 3 1440p screens, but one thing for sure I am definitely onboard with fake HDR at the least.
