I mean who in the history of drumming can dance around the 1 while keeping drum machine timing like Jojo? No one. Absolutely no one. He's the best. Of all time.
I'm surprised this kind of communication breakdown between drummer and band during the drum solo doesn't happen more. Some drum solos are so out that I'm almost more impressed by the band reentering together than I am by the actual solo. Jojo is a beast. Awesome.
Thanx to the captain for posting this very good recording with that beautiful drum sound. Jojo is just incredible creative and his groove, time, precision, technique and musicality make him sound so damn good! I like his way of soloing, with the hand/foot combinations and paradiddle variations!
Wow, as sick as it always is to see Jojo display his godlike skills, this was far from their best performance. I can tell Jojo was tired and then the solo's climax went bad. You can see he's not happy about it. Modern Drummer festival 2005 is still the best performance of this track I know, that one is friggin inhumanely perfect. As much as this video might impress you, that live version is ten times as sick still.
Exelent, I never see anyone playing drum and bass with real instruments, the most part of them are made of samplers, great, jojo mayer the best drummer
I was eating my morning cereals while listening to this, but then I understood this art can't be watched while eating cereal. So I went to the cinema and watched it there ;)
Jojo didn't make any mistake on this. The guy triggering the bass notes was out of phase with the tune at 5:45. He tried getting back into phase by stopping and listening before jumping back in again. Jojo does a buildup with his foot to give him and cue and the guy STILL came in outta phase. Who cares anyway? These guys are great and alot of this song is improv. Anybody who is criticizing Jojo here should make their own video of the same tune with no mistakes.
@man1of1steel at about 6 mins after Jojos solo the keyboardist shifts where the melody starts, which may be on purpose but it might have been a mistake!! Jojo does a lot of polyrhythm
It took me a little bit to hear what was going on, but I got it. The keyboardist rushes slightly and ends up an eithth note ahead of Jojo. My guess is the keyboardist either couldnt hear the drums or was not paying attention to Jojo's time, and got ahead. Found at apx 5: 45. Thumbs up if you hear it!
@gcharocks they probably just didnt know how to react, i mean this is pretty out there, im not a fan of this genre but this is still incredible, like i would have been going nuts personally. jojo mayer is one of the best drummers alive.
I like the style of the asian guy, i mean he looks like he is about to play some serious classic things and then he surprises everyone with this amazing keyboard track.. Awesome And Jojo well i have nothing to say.. =O
figured it out- Jojo's hihat hits in the 5:40 area are on the upbeats. when he says 1234, hes counting the upbeats. keyboardist didn't catch it. with jojo's 1234 count on the upbeat, he can do the 8th note thing (which is ALSO on the upbeat) at 6:06. Bassist caught it, Jojo knew it, keyboardist didn't catch it HOWEVER Jojo does add an extra hit during the 6:06 eighth note thing (6:09, didnt have to hit his picante hand crash) which couldve thrown off the flow a bit. kinda confusing but read
This should be entitled 'Jojo Mayer playing the shit out of his drum kit, and two other guys kind of standing there'. If you want to see a drummer getting the rest of his band back on time, I suggest typing 'Buddy Rich' into youtube's browser. Rock on, Jojo.
@gulfwind94 yeah he totally speeds up and jumps ahead by an 8th note and screws up for the next 25 seconds and does not come back in on beat 1 haha, jojo looks agitated hahaha. Jojo starts playing his fill at 5:40 with accents on every quarter note for 1 bar, but then switches it up so the accents are every quarter note triplet and i think the keys got lost.
This song is pretty repetitive, but on their albums are some pretty crazy songs that kind of leave you speechless afterwards. In a way I think they are meant to showcase his chops.
yes you are right. i had to watch the end of the solo like 5 times but the piano player tries to find it but it doesnt happen, haha. And then jojo even gave him a pretty solid count in and he still was off. lol, this was great though
why is everyone hatin on the keyboardist and the bass player the bass player is up there jammin and the keyboardist was on beat the whole time jojo came in off and it was hard to find his one. besides its the drummers job to show where the down beat is, its jojos fault..... hes still a beast though
I mean who in the history of drumming can dance around the 1 while keeping drum machine timing like Jojo? No one. Absolutely no one. He's the best. Of all time.
This performance is always going to remain Legendary :)

This performance drank my coffee.
Even if Jojo was off he still wouldnt be off because HE IS JOJO. You guys are high.
Yo hey bro
Thanx to the captain for posting this very good recording with that beautiful drum sound. Jojo is just incredible creative and his groove, time, precision, technique and musicality make him sound so damn good!

Janek's look after jojo's solo was over was priceless. xD
Hell ya!! Great footage. These guys are working hard-Gotta love em'.
this deserves so many more views
Wow, as sick as it always is to see Jojo display his godlike skills, this was far from their best performance. I can tell Jojo was tired and then the solo's climax went bad. You can see he's not happy about it.

Agree with you 100%
It would be soo sick to see Jojo Mayer under a crazy strobe light!
Awesome Jojo!
man this dude is the definition of drum....
what an awesome concert setting/venue... intimate!
Jojo is the dopest of all time
Exelent, I never see anyone playing drum and bass with real instruments, the most part of them are made of samplers, great, jojo mayer the best drummer
great stuff!
I was eating my morning cereals while listening to this, but then I understood this art can't be watched while eating cereal. So I went to the cinema and watched it there ;)
The cinema room lol
this is awesome
one of my fav. songs ..
Seein them in Boston Friday!
absolutely stunning :D
mayer's my fav drummer!
Why did Janek Gwizdala stop playing bass for JOJO and Nerve. His energy and flow is epic and way better for the crowd. Bring him back JOJO!
a maquina nunca vai superar o homem ...
I like the new line-up better. Can't wait to see them in DC next month!
The best version of this song.
This song is like a bad acid trip, I don't know if I love it or hate it- it's very evident that the musicians are really good.
DAMN. gnarly performance! yeah, saw it but it was a perfect save by jojo, shit happens live. Makes it unique.
its rare that you see a side snare down tuned like that. sounds badass. he's a pimp.
he is one of the best drummers around .
YES!
simplemente alucinante
yeah. the point is to vary as much as possible. creating vast interpretations of the same beat.
great stuff ! :D
@Freshpinguin Its the best DVD ever.... You will be amazed by how easy it is :)
PERFECT FOR STUDYNG DRUMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dennis Chambers is actually pretty good about that. He goes all over the place and always comes back to the one. Both of them are crazy with that.
that bass is sick!
GROOOVE!
janek is good for being able to keep the time even when takuya went off..

my drum teacher showed me this stuff today :0 awesome
@simoxnirvana1
me too it was fantastic
@man1of1steel at about 6 mins after Jojos solo the keyboardist shifts where the melody starts, which may be on purpose but it might have been a mistake!! Jojo does a lot of polyrhythm
@drumminjoe0507 it`s yamaha groove wedge
ahahahaaa! I fully agree w/ the title change. I thought he was pretty clear about the count in but i guess the key player wasn't paying attention...
@akypar look for janek gwizdala his my favorite bassist because hes more about the groove than of fancy overwelming tecnic sorry about the english.
7:06 watch the bassists face as he hears the cue from the keyboardist for jojo mayer to just fucking rock the shit with some crazy ass beat.
That drumming, man.
5:47 !!!
Jojo wins. His count is right.. hilarious hearing Nerve mess up like that.
I so T-O-T-A-L-L-Y agree with you. Its like, we´ve heard this a million times by now, move on or get off youtube..
@TheLiesette
it's actually the El Sabor Hand Crash
@shawnson7 WHAT A HOT START!...you're right dude, but that's the difference between human music and machine music hehe!!
@gcharocks they probably just didnt know how to react, i mean this is pretty out there, im not a fan of this genre but this is still incredible, like i would have been going nuts personally. jojo mayer is one of the best drummers alive.
@1Drummer88 He is doing the "push pull" i think....
Buy his DVD, you will learn it all :D
who gives a fuck who's right and whos wrong , this is fkn magic on that stage.
I like the style of the asian guy, i mean he looks like he is about to play some serious classic things and then he surprises everyone with this amazing keyboard track.. Awesome
And Jojo well i have nothing to say.. =O
@MattTheSasquatch It's only "messing up" if it sounds bad. If it sounds good, it's called improvisation. =P
figured it out- Jojo's hihat hits in the 5:40 area are on the upbeats. when he says 1234, hes counting the upbeats. keyboardist didn't catch it. with jojo's 1234 count on the upbeat, he can do the 8th note thing (which is ALSO on the upbeat) at 6:06.

Fuck yes!!
epic
5:06 - 5:10 ridiculous beyond incredible
Yes that was astonishing

Rock on, Jojo.
That's one happy ass bass player!! ha ha
@gulfwind94 yeah he totally speeds up and jumps ahead by an 8th note and screws up for the next 25 seconds and does not come back in on beat 1 haha, jojo looks agitated hahaha. is that Jim Belushi on keyboard from the SNL samurai deli skit
Wow, nice. With Janek Gwizdala? I actually don't know if he's replaced the other bass player, or what...
Why no cooperation between Jojo Mayer and Tom Jenkinson??
Ooooooooweeeeeeeee
@MrKendrum hmmm thats janek gwizdala
Anyone know what snare he's using??
that cymbal on his far right sounds so damn sweet! anyone know what it is?
5:08 - Holy Shit!
sweeet
This song is pretty repetitive, but on their albums are some pretty crazy songs that kind of leave you speechless afterwards. In a way I think they are meant to showcase his chops.
is that anthony jackson's signature bass??
You Tube, what's up with the buffering? Get it together or the competition will own you!
even the god makes mistakes sometimes..
@fallingfromjupiter Count to the beat. Jojo plays fine....:-)
@IPstixawesume nah homie the keyboardist was the one who was off. count it and you'll see
@wildsnydon that is TOO MUCH hahaha, I hate when something is so good it just shoots way past inspiration and becomes depressing
yes you are right. i had to watch the end of the solo like 5 times but the piano player tries to find it but it doesnt happen, haha. And then jojo even gave him a pretty solid count in and he still was off. lol, this was great though
can someone tell me where this 'mistake' happens?
Any idea which china that is?
+sempthegreat An AAX Xtreme chinese, probably 19 inch
Mayer is right. it's very syncopated but he's still right on the count.
break beat master
cymbals? I cant hear them
Janek fucking Gwizdala everyone!
Bands aren't allowed to play songs that they're expected to play in concerts?
@IPstixrawesume Agreed
@OrzelBialy616 Listen to him play jazz, and stop looking at his face. I promise you won't think that anymore.
I'd sell my soul to robot devil to play as well as him !!!
Hmmm, makes me want to hear JoJo and Les Claypool play together.
why is everyone hatin on the keyboardist and the bass player the bass player is up there jammin and the keyboardist was on beat the whole time jojo came in off and it was hard to find his one. besides its the drummers job to show where the down beat is, its jojos fault..... hes still a beast though
awesome drumming but I didn't see much from the other musicians...
WHO CARES IF THEY MESSED UP! It still sounded cool.
ya the syncopated part, he is following jojo, and when they ended he started too soon/ jojo started late... in the context of the song
Jojo is right.... ;)
