As a mythology nerd (Freddie Mercury was too) I enjoyed the story behind the story. J None as Anubis is of course the Egyptian god of the Underworld and weighs Earl's heart against a feather so show he is worthy of the afterlife. Eli is a Hindu death god, who uses his mace to force spirits to stay in the afterlife. Layne in the gray fur coat and sword is listed as "Sentinel" but is clearly meant to be Cerberus, dog sentinel of Hades.
Geoff, though, is where it gets FUN! The Baron is from Haitian Voodoo. Unlike all the others, whose jobs are to welcome the dead and KEEP them dead, the Baron is the god of death and resurrection. In other words, he has the power to bring Earl back to life. He is there to see if Earl WANTS to live strongly enough. This is why the others give him side-eyes and toss some shade at him in the lyrics of "We Are the Champion", because he's, in a sense, a godly rival. His cane works to protect Earl from the others, like Cerberus' sword which would have severed his soul from his body, and the weight ("Pressure") of Anubis and Yama's hands. Notice, he blocks the sword right away.
As Earl grows less grieved and shocked and more determined to live ("Show Must Go On") he has to first fight Cerberus if he wants to escape the afterlife, then the other two, but the Baron is the ultimate decider, thus the "final boss." They face off, the Baron sees that Earl is firm in his stance to live, so he starts to turn away, and that's when he poofs.
At the very end, Earl no longer has his gold medallion. Such things could be used to pay off the Baron and convince him not to take your soul.
Was that all planned by Voiceplay? I'd like to think so. It makes for a fun story.

I was looking to see if someone shared the mythology nods! There are too many for it to be a coincidence in my opinion. Very rarely are such details overlooked by VoicePlay, and the fact that they called out which deity each of the men was portraying reinforces the intentionality for me.
Also, since that is Earl's IRL partner at his bedside (we see him in the Boy Band Medley as well), would Earl have not been weirded out that the deities looked like his friends/Fellow VP members? Very Wizard of Oz. Maybe the deities took those forms intentionally...
Edit: I forgot to mention that during Geoff's solo, he even looks down at the medallion Earl is wearing, just before the cane stomp with a look of recognition and potential acceptance (should Earl want to be revived). [hearing Geoff as Ursula in the Little Mermaid Medley] "We haven't discussed the issue of payment..."

Earl's voice was made for this. Geoff's run near the end was fantastic. I love how you can hear Geoff's base throughout. Eli's voice has that rock voice quality & is amazing. I love the part where Eli as short as he is standing in front of Geoff & giving him Hell. I think Eli is so adorable. OMG, Layne the beat boxer is phenomenal. Nobody can come close to top this performance. This is one reason why Voice Play is known as The Theater Kids. I absolutely love your reactions thank you.

You have reacted to their “Oogie Boogie Song” so you’ve seen Earl (the bearded guy) there, doing an incredible character voice. Actually, since they started their RUclips channel in 2012 until the summer of 2020 (when Earl left) the members have been almost constant, the exception being the baritone position (Tony Wakim until end of 2015, JNone early 2017 - June 2021). So the confusion is mostly because of this last year, when two members (Earl and J None) have left.

Geoff and Layne tend to split the arrangements about 50/50, although Eli has recently done some as well. Very occasionally they will have someone else arrange for them, but it's rare (recently, their cover of We're Good is an example of this). Geoff has a video on his own RUclips channel about how he arranges music for VoicePlay, and it's both informative and amusing (he's got a great sense of humor). He also does some amazing solo work you really ought to check out, as well as several tutorials on singing very low (including subharmonic technique). I've never seen Layne talk about how he arranges, but he did do a fantastic interview with The Charismatic Voice, where he talks a lot about how he does the sound engineering.
As far as their lineup goes, when this was filmed the high tenor was Earl Elkins Jr., the second tenor was Eli (you pronounced it correctly!), baritone J. None, bass Geoff, percussionist Layne. Earl left in 2020, and more recently J. None joined the Navy. Earl has yet to be permanently replaced (instead they have featured singers guesting- and, I imagine, auditioning), but recently J. None was replaced by Cesar De La Rosa, who has been singing with them since they recorded We're Good. He's a great addition- he's got that same super-fun, playful energy that J. None had. (It goes without saying that he's another extraordinarily skilled vocalist) Everyone was hoping Deejay Young would eventually replace Earl (he has featured with them quite a bit, and fits in well), but with the return of Broadway he's going back to touring with Hamilton instead.

They’ve had some wonderful songs recently with featured singers and have filled one vacancy. Geoff and Layne usually arrange the songs. Eli helps with production and Layne does have a production company. I do love this medley. Thanks for your reaction you haven’t done very much VoicePlay yet. You've got the acapella community collaboration issue going on again here. Geoff does some arranging but they have also used Rob Dietz who (wait for it) is one of the 3 founders of A Capella Academy along with Avi Kaplan (who had the original idea) and Ben Bram the arranger for Pentatonix. Their community is as tight as their harmonies. At the time I am writing this, (Dec 21st), Homefree (all 5 of them) have just tweeted out to get 12-18 year olds to audition for Avi's A Capella Academy next summer.

You nailed the pronunciation of Eli's name! This is such a cool VoicePlay song - one of my favourites. My suggestions for other ones to view are "Trapped: Billie Eilish in 3 Min" and their Panic! at the Disco medleys, parts 1 and 2. Those three videos tell a story, with Trapped being the prequel (it was actually filmed last). You could react to all three at once for the full story line, or at least react to the two Panic vids at the same time as they're very short and one follows immediately after the other. There's also a bit of a fandom theory that this Queen vid follows after the end of their last Panic vid...
