Keto & Intermittent Fasting macros have something in common that relates to carbohydrates. Never heard of before Dr. Ekberg figured out that there is direct relationship between the number of carbs in a keto diet and intermittent fasting that happen in the body. This has never been discussed before, that we know of.
You hear all the time how important carbs are. People think you need carbohydrates to survive, but you do you? We get tons of comments about why people need carbs, but a lot of people are going with very low carbs and you will find out why.
A lot of people have had success with getting into ketosis, but do you understand why? There are some people who are scared to eat a ketogenic diet. Dr Ekberg explains with math why keto and intermittent fasting are part of the body's natural and healthy way to be.

It is not theoretical. The practical application is that carbohydrates are stored in the fat tissue along with fat in the exact ration needed to fuel the brain during a fast/starvation. Many people claim that fasting is muscle wasting, but the numbers prove that we don't need to break down protein to provide glucose.

Brilliant video, thank you for the explanation. Four month ago, I had a telephone consolation with our doctor's diabetics nurse and when I refused medication and told her I would be ,slowly adapting my body for fasting, she told me I would become seriously ill and would need medical intervention. They are suspicious of they great doctors here on RUclips (nurse was brought in to speak to me about eating 5 meals a day and taking my insulin- I just nodded) I decided to use my docs and nurses just to measure my progress. It is slow going for me because my immunotherapy drug also raises glucose. But the tumor went from a mango to now a raisin size so immunotherapy is working. But once I’m off this Keytruda it will be crucial to eat sugar rarely and do clean keto & fasting

Started June 19th on Keto and Intermittent Fasting based on what the good doctor here has posted so many times, and I went from 177 lbs since June 19th, to today I weigh in at 151. I truly believe God knew all of this, when designing "the first body" and I do know the longer I live, the more I realize I need to take the best care of this body He gave me. I wish I'd known, what I know now, on how to fuel, how to fast, how to eat for life, Before 3 years ago. I’ve completely changed my diet, I eat mostly fresh greens, limited fruit, lean meats, very limited carbs, I intermittently fast….it’s made a world of difference. First the weight came off easy and fast. I’m no longer tired in the afternoons. I feel like a new man. Without the intermittent fasting I was only loosing a pound a week. I added 1.5 hour daily walk and the fasting…..wow it was a dramatic difference. Some weeks I was loosing close to four pounds.

Carbs aggravate my diabetes. I needed to lose weight as well. I started monitoring my blood glucose myself, along with my blood pressure. I selected a diet by experimentation to avoid glucose spikes. It turned out to be very similar to a ketogenic diet. I minimize carbs, eating them only in complex form, not processed, and that sparingly. Carbs aren't essential at all. I lost 40 pounds and actually look forward to exercise, which I do a lot! My blood pressure is normal now, and my VO2 max (a measurement of fitness) is well into the "excellent" range for my age.

Brilliant!!! I just discovered your channel and have been binge watching! I was a little brainwashed for the last few years by the low fat high carb plant based Doctors, unfortunately just getting fatter and fatter. I finally snapped out of that and started to fast. I decided to retract my initial beliefs (and dogma) about a plant based diet, and decided to put ME first. Fasting (prolonged fasting), and low carb refeeds, have resulted in me losing over 16lbs in 3 weeks! The Math in this video has proven my old biases and fears about not eating enough carbs, to be incorrect. Thank you for your "Geekiness" in working this out! A favourite saying of one of the plant-based Doctors was "the fat you eat is the fat you wear" .... my years of insulin resistance and poor liver beg to differ. I am finally healing.

@@drekberg you are certainly giving the scientific facts that the other channels do not. And I find that the flip side of the Plant-based channels and proponents to be demonizing keto purely by using a method of research that supports their biases. Well, the proof is in the pudding for me: I'm eating very little carbohydrates and some fatty proteins, and I'm losing more weight than I ever did on a plant-based high carb diet. For people with Insulin Resistance and Obesity, I think eating high carb low fat is as silly as rolling in dirt to get clean!

Dr Ekberg, man to man, I think that you're akin to a demigod...of knowledge and simplicity. Your grasp of complex concepts shows everytime. Your utter simplicity is what endears you to us; don't change a thing. Now I know that you don't care much for my flattery, so l'll get to the point. Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with type two diabetes, and placed on meds: Metformin and it's cousins. I was also found to be very hypertensive, and given meds for that too. Then I saw a video by Dr Jason Fung first, and others by you, and I was blown away by your revelations. In short, I have started a holistic approach and discontinued taking the meds. I have lost about twenty five pounds so far. My eyesight has improved (this entire text was written without glasses) and I feel better, enjoying less pain and more energy. Thanks! One thing I need your help with though: how do you treat nail fungus? I wear steel-tipped shoes in my factory job, and have been afflicted with this condition for years... it's really bothering me.

@@garvinstewart5511 Nail fungus is a sign of systemic fungal overgrowth. It is something which diabetics and those close to prediabetes are prone to as the fungus thrives on the excess blood glucose. As your sugar levels come down and you continue on keto your fungal overgrowth within the esophagus, intestines, skin, ears and nails will die down and you'll get relief from the root cause. But meanwhile you should take apple cider vinegar 1-2 tbsps in a 750-1000 ml bottle of water and have it with a straw. You can add lime or lemon juice to it too. Also if you cut down dairy you may also speed up your healing. Also try and notice if you have any food intolerances and avoid those for better gut health.

I was watching the Human Growth Hormone video, and the doctor said something in the nature of 'if the body supposed to make it naturally, don't take it externally'
Maybe we can extend this idea to carbs too: Our bodies make carbs, just the right amount and the right time, so why take them externally?

I want to thank you, Dr. Ekberg. For years I've never understood why I was fat and what was happening. For a while, I was angry at all those doctors I paid who simply said for me to eat less. Feeling like a failure when in fact, I was misinformed...and so were they. When I listen to this video, I am reminded of a colonoscopy test I had where I had an argument with a physician while waiting for my test to begin. I had been on Keto about 5 months and I mentioned it to my attending physician. She tried to tell me that carbohydrates were a necessary fuel. I smirked that it was obvious my brain was living off ketones..and had been for the last 4 months. She spouted something I didn't understand as a counter but all I did was smile. Thank you, Dr. Ekberg.

Same here, Robert. Some people go into ketosis eating 50 carbs a day, others 20 carbs a day. I've checked various Keto websites and while everyone is different and require different amounts of carb restrictions to enter ketosis, everyone will be in ketosis if they ingest 16 carbs or less. I did not want to gamble and go in and out of ketosis, or guess if I will be in ketosis. By keeping my carbs under 16/day, I'm ensured to be in ketosis. 👍

You are right! Sooo fascinating. And it helps cuz I do need to loose 75-100 lbs. started carnivore after intermittent keto(!), 1 month ago. Off and on keto for a yr. kept struggling w withdrawals and really not enough knowledge to punch through those hard times. I’m 57, pcos, meta syndrome, w fibroids. Trying carnivore to address the fibroids. Have list 12 lbs first month. It has been so much easier than keto, plus, as I’m learning, I really don’t need any carbs right now. Hastings is getting easier. But this explanation helps me understand what I am actually achieving as I do this! Thank you so much Dr Eckberg!!! I am geeking out w you.

This really puts the last pieces together for me. I can now see that alternate day fasting is going to work a miracle for me. Dr. Mindy Pelz has a great chart that tracks the variations in the various benefits of fasting over a five day period, and I can see from that and the information that you clearly lay out here that alternate day fasting maximizes efficiency for me and can be sustainable.

Great information! Great breakdown on the science! For people like me who did Atkins back in the late 90s, it clarifies what was taking place in my body. I new it worked, but not the fine points of why and how to tweek it to make it work better. It also shows how today's Healthy Keto + Fasting is far superior to the old Atkins, and why folks on WW almost never have any great or long term success. My oldest daughter did WW for years with roller coaster results, never felt any better, and just like a roller coaster riding, always ended up back at the starting point. A nutritionist helped her get going on healthy keto and it has been life changing. Off all the stations/BP meds and feeling great. Same for me and BP meds.

(I have diabetes type 2, insulin resistant, fatty liver, and 40 kilo overweight)
My fasting morning blood sugar drops already after 2 weeks. Now it's so good I don't need Medformin enymore.
I doo 2 meals a day. When I am not hungry, only one meal. The good fat helps me to undergo no cravings anymore. It's so helpful. When I'm not hungry, I don't want to eat. (With the former carb diat, I always stay hungry)
After 2,5 months, I lost 13 kilograms of weight. I am now able to go upstairs without huffing and puffing. And feeling a lot healthier!
      Gif it a try 👍🏻
      Hope this is helpful.

Ancient Inuit lived on a very high protein and fat diet (probably because there were simply no carbohydrates available in those extreme conditions). The average life expectancy of ancient Inuit was about 43.5 years. Westerners in the 19th century lived to about 49 years. Westerners were eating a lot more carbs than Inuit, probably because protein was very expensive. People in the early 20th century North America were basically eating meat 3 times a week. Today we're eating meat 3 times a day, which is indicative of a HUGE price drop in protein.
So yes, I agree one can survive on a very high fat diet, but I would argue that only if its primarily monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fat...eating copious amounts of saturated fat is definitely a major health risk. A high saturated fat diet is not optimal for human health.
Our problem in western culture in recent years has been eating far too many carbs (namely breads), so I agree that we all need to reduce carbohydrates in our diet, but I would think that one should not try to eliminate them. My target is to try to only eat carbs from fruits and vegetables, and rely much less on grain. I have also eliminated all added sugar.

Good points. I am also not advocating to go to zero carbs. The video is simply answering the question of where do they come from when we are fasting. I do not agree that the fat needs to be or should be monounsaturated or polyunsaturated. That is another myth. All unspoiled fat is good. Polyunsaturated fats are good while they are still in the original fresh food. The cells of the food protects the fats while the food is fresh. Monounsaturated and saturated fats are better in the sense that they don't spoil as fast once separated from the food. They are less reactive. As always the quality of the source is what determines whether it is healthy or not.

@@drekberg Thanks for responding...it is appreciated. I think my opinion about saturated fats comes from my latest interest is weaning myself off of animal fat, but I do eat a little of it though (i.e. in meat, and selective cheese etc.). I don't disagree with you on carbs either...I just find that reducing one's carbohydrate intake to 5% is a little much for me (I'm currently working out every day). My body fat loss through diet and exercise is going very well (currently close to 7%), so I don't really need to change much to help in that regard, but I am keeping an eye on my carbohydrate intake as insulin resistance is always worth avoiding if possible. I'm just not sure a Keto diet is something I need to do when I'm working out as extensively as I am (I'm just starting to train for a triathlon).

There are desaturase enzymes and even cytochrome P450 will metabolise saturated fat. Cholesterol which is a saturated sterol is converted to hormone by oxidation. There are a few specific unsaturated fats like DHA/EPA which are not produced by the body. BDNF (brain derived neurotophic factor) which helps regrow brain cell, is stimulated by butyric acid and that can come from saturated fats.

Pacal Votan saturated fat is bad is a myth. Latest research has confirmed that saturated fat is good for the heart and brain. Also helps combat cancer and promote longevity. Obesity and diabetes skyrocketed in the 80s after the government guidelines condemned saturated fat. Everyone started to hate on it when the fact that it is helpful.
