Huge congratulations Ellie! Your videos are so incredibly helpful for prospective student midwives! Props to you being in first year and giving us content to ease our anxieties lol! All the best for year 2, you will be qualified in the blink of an eye! 🍾🥂🍀
You are an absolute joy to watch! The passion you have for midwifery is magic. I’m about to start my midwifery degree in September and you’ve given me such an insight in what to expect. Can’t wait to get going now 🥰 thanks for the great content xxx
Love hearing about your journey. I’m just about to start my degree in September! Scary & exciting. Look forward to hearing about your 2nd year. Keep up the good work 😀
Congratulations on completing First Year, Ellie - it sounds absolutely amazing! I'm starting my Access course in a few weeks, so will be applying to university very soon and it is really good to get a idea of what lies ahead. Thank you for letting us follow along with your journey. Enjoy your summer. I can't wait to see what you get up to on second year! 🤩 xx
Thank you hun! I'm so glad that you enjoy following my journey and find it useful, because that's the reason I started my channel! I'll be back soon with more videos. All the best with your access course and future in midwifery! :) x
Congratulations on completing your first year! Im currently on week 9 of my first year! I can totally relate to the work load, its definitely ramped up quickly the last couple of weeks, feeling a bit overwhelmed this week do you have any tips? Great video! X
Thank you! Yeah it definitely can be a bit overwhelming, but hopefully after Christmas you'll have settled in more, the workload will probably spread out a bit more and you'll find your feet on placement too. Things should feel a little better then, but for now try and make time for things you enjoy (like going out with friends, family etc) and try to keep on top of your lectures so you don't fall behind. That way you won't feel too guilty for having some you-time! Hope that helps x
You are a real inspiration for my midwifery journey. I start university next month and was wondering with the osce exam did u get to know the topics before hand? Xx
Aww that’s so sweet, thank you! 😊 and good luck for your degree! You’ll do amazing🤩yeah with the osces you will get told what skills you need to practice quite a while before hand, and you will have chance to practice them a few times at uni as well :)
hey! i started this week as a student midwife and just wondered when out in the community how long where the sessions at people’s homes and what else is included in community???? xxthankksss
Congratulations on starting the course!! Home visits can take anywhere from 10mins to 1.5hrs depending on how much is needed! Most of the time they last around 30mins I'd say though, but occasionally you'll have to do extra bits you weren't planning on! In the community you'll weigh babies, do TCB checks (for jaundice), check the baby head to toe, check on mums physical and mental health (asking lots of in depth questions about her blood loss, breasts and nipples etc), checking mum's wounds, doing breastfeeding assessments and giving support on positioning & attachment, sometimes checking mum's blood pressure, and booking further appointments with them! There's soooooo much to do in the community for postnatal! I'll write another reply for what you do in the community for antenatal appointments x
For antenatal appointments in the community, you are usually at different GP surgeries/children's centres holding your clinic. Your midwife will have a caseload of women (and hopefully most will get continuity!) and they will come at different stages of pregnancy to their appointments. You do different things in the appointment depending on what gestation they're at. But you can do: Blood pressure, urine sample checks, measuring SFH (size of the bump), abdominal palpations, listening to the fetal heart rate on the doppler, discussing birth plans, sweeps (around 41 weeks), blood tests etc. Sometimes if women have conditions during pregnancy (like gestational diabetes) you'll also check their readings to see if their blood glucose levels are stable. Again, there's soooooo much you can do in community! That's why it's my favourite place 😊 usually you'll do a clinic for half of the day, and do home visits afterwards/before so you can get a bit of both x
