Stefan Jackiw’s bow SNAPS like a twig during Violin Concerto at Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

- During the UK premiere of Ukrainian-born composer Reinhold Gliere’s Violin Concerto with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, foremost violinist Stefan Jackiw faced an unexpected mishap when his bow suddenly snapped in two a third of the way through the concerto.
Despite using the bow for over 20 years, the surprised but composed Jackiw turned to the concertmaster to trade. Unfazed, “the elegantly razor-thin soloist… kept ready by the orchestral leader and carried on without missing more than a beat.” [The Telegraph]

Handeled professionally!

Would've been cooler if he pulled an extra out of his shirt like a quiver.
I particularly like how his reaction is very clearly one of "oh for goodness sake of course this had to happen now, oh well let's move on", rather than to get flustered and let that affect his performance in any way
The descendants of Reinhold Gliere accepted this musical incident with bated breath and delight! We are grateful to Stefan and Maestro Karabits for the excellent performance!
0:20 the look on his face was like not now I’m busy
What a super cool (and professional!) reaction - My compliments!!
Love this young mans talent and skill,... he's beautiful to listen to,...
Yay a new video! I would love to hear some more music from Stefan these days...! 🎶
Don't see this very often. Well done!
There is cool and composed and then there is Stefan Jackiw cool and composed.
Cool and composed!😮
WOW it is extraordinary! Bravo Stefan Jackiw you are a brilliant surviver!
When the passion rises, the bow breaks.
Well that's new! Seen many strings go but never a bow...
I would've panicked and hes like: "oops..(Smile) "
And just Continues like it never happened
I get so tired of incorrect information on, well, virtually any social media platform, and this very inaccurate description what happened during Jackiw's performance is, yet again, more misinformation. Jackiw's BOW did not "snap in two". The hair of a bow is held by the insertion of two wooden plugs - really individually carved tetrahedrons, cut so that the tension of the hair actually helps hold the plug (and the hair) securely during playing. At times, and obviously it happens to even the best bow rehairing artists, that due to changes over time in the temperature and humidity a bow is subject to - not to mention the changes in pressure on the hair when playing in different ways and using different bowings - the (frequently maple) carved plug may change in size/shape just enough that the hair it is holding in at the tip of the bow, as in this instance, is no longer secure. The hair came out of the tip. That's all that happened. Stefan will have his bow rehaired, and all will be well again. Please, people who write these descriptions: get the correct facts!!!! While it is definitely more dramatic to say that a violinist's bow suddenly "snapped in two" (which, in 55 years, I've never seen happen), in this performance the reality was, while still dramatic, not nearly as dire a consequence as the bow actually snapping in two. There is enough ignorance with regard to the general population without adding even more. Please, state things correctly!! I rehair bows, and what really happened is obvious to any violinist. Members of the public would benefit from a concise and articulate explanation of what happened during this performance. Even as I read the "bow snapped in two" line designed to pull viewers in, I was thinking: "No, what really happened was that the plug holding the hair at the tip came loose."
There are a few frames where you can clearly see the tip of the bow missing
In this case, the tip of the bow really broke. But in general, you're right

it clearly snapped at the tip. you can both hear it and see it.
What's the pieces of music called, please ?
it's in the description
Young talent!
That is a strong arm!!!!
That’s why a violinist or cellist carries a spare bow.
Stefan has such poise. Sad for the bow :(
the champ
Played the hell out of that bow 😂
They acted like it was only $1
What piece is this?
Someone booing? Why?
I think it was a 'woo!' not a boo. At least I hope so...
They were applauding for sure.
No that wasn't a Boo,... it was a Whoo,... that's what us Dorset Dumplings from Bournemouth sound like when we do a cheering Whoo!!!... No seriously there was nothing but admiration for Stephan,... he's amazing... we Love him...
more like pernambreako
health everything all...
I use carbon fiber
A 30,000.00 USD bow😂😂😂
like a crashed ferrari
God this doesnt happen with concert pianists.
Other things happen to pianists. I have seen two piano performances interrupted because a broken, rattling string needed to be removed.
Perhaps the piano was already like that or close. @@RUclipsHandlesAreMoronic
It's just wood after all.....
its like 1k
@@swipex7447 way more 30k+ for a soloist thats minimum
@@madhabfr close enough
@@swipex7447 maybe now it is. it definitely wasn't LOL
lol “Ukrainian-born”? So was Edward Said “Israeli-born” because he was born in Jerusalem in 1935?
Look at the end for the woman at the bottom right, she must the the one who handed him their bow as when you see everyone bowing the final note, she's instead just sat motionless
actually she just wound up with the bow by the time that piece ended. He handed the bow off to the concert master (first chair, the one all the other violinists look to know exactly how everyone is going to play. I.E up bow here, down bow there, little pause here etc.). if you are ever lost you look to the concert master.
and if the soloist is ever in trouble, they also look to the concert master to swap their instruments due to a broken string, usually. This is a pretty rare instance where a bow that likely cost 10's of thousands of dollars (if not more) snapped at the tip. Once the concert master has the broken instrument, or bow, he will wait until there's a long enough pause in the music (for the violinists) to switch with the next seat so the rest of the violinists (and audience) can have their concert master back.
From there, every suitable pause in the music for the violinists, another switch will take place and the bow or instrument continues to get passed back/swapped until it reaches the last seat. This is standard procedure in Orchestra's as it serves the purpose of the least "loss" in experience of the music for the audience as well as keeping the "leader" of the violin section able to play.
and as it continues to get passed back, less people in the front not playing, less distracting, and one could sort of argue the better players are able to continue playing this way as well.
:)
