- Sir Karl Jenkins was expecting to conduct his 'Palladio' on stage at the Royal Albert Hall, but Scotland’s national orchestra had other ideas...
In his 80th birthday year, Sir Karl was treated to a musical surprise by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, at Classic FM Live with Viking, where hosts Alexander Armstrong and Myleene Klass brought the Welsh maestro two cakes in celebration.
The wonderful arrangement was made by the orchestra’s conductor for the rest of the night, Ben Palmer. Watch the full concert soon on Sky Arts.

We can say the whole birthday event was...
Orchestrated. 😎 🎂
This comment deserves more thumbs up!
L🤣L 👏👏👏
😂
😂😂 literally
Nice one!!❤
This is the most luxurious way of saying happy birthday.
well said
My thoughts exactly!😍
agreed
Indeed😊. He's a young 80 too.
I'm just here for how well they orchestrated Happy Birthday.
it was...quite elegant!
So very well orchestrated. So well planned..
@@hestergreen2031It's an easy song, so it was probably pretty easy for each individual member of the orchestra to improvise their own part.
I'm just here to read your comment.
Like a soundtrack to a movie.
Gotta admit, even 'Happy Birthday' sounds majestic AF with a whole orchestra.
It was written by Mozart!
I felt it to the core
nearly everything sounds epic with a whole orchestra
@@grandrapids57 no it was not, you liar
@@grandrapids57 this is not even close to true and I have no clue why people are liking this.
I was there with my daughter. It was a lovely surprise for him...and us!!!
Where was this? And then?
Classic FM live at the Royal Albert Hall in April
@@susanmcguire6355 thanks🙏
@@susanmcguire6355but his birthday is in February?! Did they explain why they did that? 😁
He is doing an 80th birthday tour which will last most of his birthday year.
'i gotta start again now'
Happy 80th!
😂😂😂
Understandable - from his point of view, there's not much time! 😅
You couldn’t get the “I” right? 🤦🏻 gotta start again now
@@VideoAssistantRafi You couldn’t get the “G” right? You also forgot to end your sentence correctly. Gotta start again now.🤦♂
@@Kannpass well done you spotted 👍 there's a hope to educate you then.
That was the most epic and triumphant Happy Birthday I’ve ever heard.
Have you seen the David Robertson one?
Does this mean that orchestras don't really need conductors all the time?
Yes. I did not even know Happy Birthday had so many notes and chords! 😮
@@onlyme112yes, but for a long piece, it can be quite difficult for the entire orchestra to stay together. The conductor is mainly there as a lighthouse for every musician to focus in on
That is what I want on my next birthday!
Am I the only one tearing up? That was soooo sweet to do for him. ❤
Not the only one. I'm right there with you!
I only teared up the first five times I watched it.
Me too
No I'm not. You lot are weird.
I am baaaaawliiiing. 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Sir Karl used to sit next to my mother in primary school. She's 80 on Sunday.
I hope your mother enjoyed her birthday 🎈
Happy birthday to your mom❤
Happy birthday to your dear old mum
Happy birthday to your Mum❤ May she have many more healthy and care free days ahead of her 🙏🏾
I hope your mom had a great birthday
I never listened to "Happy Birthday" as delivered by a full orchestra. Sounds amazing.
Indeed!
It's what we do all our lives at rehearsals when it's the birthday of a friend/member of the orchestra, in every possible country, everybody with their own local version of the birthday song in that country. :)
@@drk_blood That is so sweeet
We were more than 500 (250/250) voices singing his works at his 75 year birthday...
That power, that is something else...
Agreed !!!
It was business as usual...until it wasn't. The transition to 'happy birthday to you' is superbly done!
It must be splendid to have an entire orchestra wishing you happy birthday :D
And the entire audience, too!
It happens a lot in orchestra environments, but usually we do it during rehearsals, as the birthdays don't always line up with concerts
It's always a fun activity 😊
That transition was so smooth
That transition was flawless! Spot-on perfect!
When people think they are doing something awesome for you, but actually they are totally ruining your day 😂 and you still love them
😂😂😂😂😂
They’re the annoying friends that you love to hate 😂
so true!!! 🤣💕
The best kind of people!
He was like “these imbeciles” 😂
Absolutely fantastic! Seamless transition to the Happy Birthday song. Must've had some practice without Sir Karl around!
80 years is truly something to celebrate not many people make it to half that honestly😭❤

@@starman2089 “Growing old beats the alternative" - Unknown
that is if you even want to celebrate, a lot of people dont celebrate birthdays. i guess you are implying that a lot of people are dying young. yes, could be true. This is also another important consideration for having kids. perhaps better to not have if the chances are so high of dying young and leaving them without parents
Really? Not many people make it to half that? I didn't know you could access RUclips from 1346.
@@bofgherlmao 😂
The flawless transition and the look in his face were so precious. And his reaction in the end is just like mine would be. I gotta start all over again 😂😂
I shed a few tears every single time I watch this. Must be a great feeling to be this loved!!

Thank you RUclips algorithm for recommending this wholesome video.
Not just a director, he's a composer, one of the last geniuses, and nobody was standing !
He was also a member of the prog rock band Soft Machine….amazing!!
My faith in human kindness has been restored. Thank you very much!
It's so common in our lives as musicians tho. :)
Not really that special... We do this all our lives when playing on stage or at the rehearsals !
Really? It's going to take a lot more than that.
I would say more rejuvenated than restored, but I understand the sentiment. 😊
@@drk_blood that's very nice!
All happy birthdays should have this orchestral intro
I had the biggest smile on my face when I realized it was the History Buffs intro!
Hey, what's up fellow Buff!

Probably the most beautiful rendition of the Happy Birthday song I've ever heard.
Yes, with all these instruments of different tonalities
Now I know what I want for my birthday - a FULL ORCHESTRA!
That's the best sounding Happy Birthday ever.
I loved that. We need more of these moments in our lives.
In this deeply selfish world we indeed need more of these moments, if only to show that surprising someone else is actually much more fun than being so busy with yourself.
love the transition from Palladio to Happy birthday
With all the craziness & BS going on its moments like these that gives you joy & hope.
Imagine being that beloved. Wonderful.
Wow!
Can't believe it was five years ago that I sang at your 75 year birthday...
If there is anyone in particular I wish so many more birthdays, then it's you Karl!
Not a Sir by any royalty, but a Sir by me, who have hunted for real music for all my life...
Thank you Karl, for all that you have given me!
He writes music, which is always accessible and throughly enjoyable. Happy Birthday to a great Welsh man.
That was glorious - beautifully done. "Happy Birthday" played by a full orchestra is absolutely stunning, very moving. Happy Birthday!
Watching the cello player smile just before transitioning to happy birthday was precious 💞
As you grow older birthdays don’t have the same effect as when you were a kid and mom and dad always made sure you had a party…this is awesome to always nice when you get old and someone surprises you for your birthday. Gotta love it!
I'd add, though, that I look forward to them more, and wish they'd last longer, than when I was younger. I think I take them less for granted these days.
Imagine having one of the best orchestras in the world playing happy birthday for you. Perfect
This demonstrates the love and friendship that is forged from playing in an orchestra together 🥹
Happy 80th Birthday Sir Karl Jenkins. 🙏
Wow, that is the most epic happy birthday song ever, a whole orchestra played it
Man , the way it seamlessly transitioned to the birthday song followed by an ending is amazing it sounded beautiful.
Brings me tears,, I don't know why. That was so sweet of them all. So well orchestrated.
Moments like these are so touching.
I love how even though the transition from the original Palladio to Happy Birthday featured material from the original composition, Sir Karl still knew something was up but continued to play it cool, but when they broke into Happy Birthday, his reaction was just gold ^_^
That man has a GLORIOUS mustache
What an absolutely lovely suprise. They really made it special
Loved how his baton stopped a few notes in to Happy Birthday!!! What a way to celebrate your 80th!!! Happy 80th Birthday Sir Karl!
That was most excellent and seamless transition.
I had the joy of attending his 70th birthday concert at the Albert Hall in 2014 - can’t believe it was a decade ago. Still have the CD he signed. Such wonderful music.
He knew immediately something was up by the way his hand dropped as soon as they changed it up. Heartwarming.
One of the nicest birthday surprises I’ve ever seen on RUclips. They did an amazing birthday rendition without the conductor. Happy Birthday Sir Karl Jenkins !
Hes reaction is priceless once he realized. Bravo
This is how we all should treat each other. It's a great feeling to see and support the happiness of others.
1 minute, that's all it took for me, someone who's been struggling recently, someone who has been lost in direction, this 1 minute special act, made me smile so much. thank you
I can't get enough of this Happy Birthday orchestra. What an amazing performance. Thanks for uploading!
As a Welsh speaker it was really nice to clearly hear "Penblwydd hapus i ti" amongst the "Happy birthday to you"
That was the most beautiful Happy Birthday I’ve ever heard. Happy Birthday Sir Karl.
Imagine being literally surrounded by all that love! Incredible!
What a lovely little surprise!! ❤️
Beautiful...Hats off to the Orchestra
That brought tears to my eyes. Very emotional.
One of the best modern day composers and he is Welsh 🏴🏴🏴
This man is 80?! He looks great!!
That is beyond cool! It even left me with some emotional response. Jenkins must be an awesome conductor and person to rate such a surprise.
The transition is amazing!
The transition was flawless...well orchestrated 🔥❤️💯
Yes like the pun well orchestrated 😊
It was also nice to see him graciously take the joke instead of going off. Professionalism of the highest degree and hats off to the audience for the “interruption “
This was beautiful 🥺 He looks great for 80. Happy belated Sir Karl 💜
That was the most majestic "Happy Birthday" song that I have ever heard! Well played! :)
How impactful is the simple power of kindness!
Such a brilliant composer, what a wonderful surprise and so deserved!!
I would have cried! What a lovely rendition of that song!
I like and love to see conductors who look like, rockstars! Sir Karl is just one of those who rocks it out!
What a beautiful touch!
That has to be one of the most superb Happy Birthday renditions I’ve ever heard - bravo!
oh how lovely... I have replayed this over and over, the changeover was seamless!
What an amazing gesture. That was beautiful. Happy Birthday.
I just got chills. Wonderful and well deserved
He knew; happily 😊 went along. Expert musicians know the melody line and chord progressions of the classics.
I was scratching my head about how nobody recognized that or is it just me 😂 but there you go finally I got some relief now 😂
The little classic fm tune at the end was cherry on the cake 🎂
Humans can do something wonderful from time to time.
This is so beautiful to see someone to be loved as much as he is! Happy Birthday Sir Karl Jenkins🎉
Bless their hearts - didn’t miss a beat when they switched songs 🤭
For such a big and warm surprise, he _conducted_ himself very well
How WONDERFUL IT SOUNDS
Classical music always draw the best from everybody. Happy bday, maestro.
Now that's just wholesome.
There are few simple pleasures left in life. Moments like these fill the soul. Wonderful.
What a wonderful surprise and heartfelt reaction!
I watch this 20 times and I could probably
watch it another hundred times!
It was just gorgeous!!
Happy 80th! That was a touching moment to celebrate an amazing composer, conductor musician!
As a longtime trombone player, I greatly appreciate this and think it is absolutely amazing! Great job Orchestra, great job
I'm glad to see that many people at a concert for classical music! In my city, the symphony orchestra is struggling to bring in crowds 😔
What city do you live in that struggles to bring in crowds for a classical music concert? I live in New York City where classical music is very popular. We even have a free Philharmonic concert coming up on June 12 for the masses in Central Park, which they do every year.
How beautiful and memorable it must be for him! Short and sweet gesture!🎉 🙌❤
One od the best conducters on this planet❤
He conducted only half that piece!
This was absolutely amazing, Happy Birthday Sir Karl ❤. I pray that I can have an entire orchestra play this exact rendition on my 80th birthday 🎂
Gotta be the best rendition of the HBD song of all time 😂
I dont know why this made me so emotional! What a beautiful surprise 🩷🩷
I know exactly what you mean! This was so sweet and overwhelming! Much respect for a very special conductor!
From Southern California here, I so wanted to be at that concert, had plans years ago but then Covid hit, I so adore the music this man composes! Perhaps someday, until then Happy Birthday Sir Karl!
Covid is mostly over - you could have gone to that concert now in 2024.
This is so sweet. His reaction is precious, and the music is spot on! ❤
How lovely, in all regards. ❤
Absolutely BRILLANT!!! Happy birthday maestro! 🎉
