Thanks for this tutorial. My old pressing ham (it was my mother's before it became mine) split open beyond repair and I haven't been able to find the extra in our budget to replace it. Now, with your clever pattern, I can DIY myself a new one for a fraction of the cost.
Thanks didn't know I needed one, but I'm off to make one as I'm making a halter boned top for my granddaughter and this is going to make the pressing easier.
Thank you. Just made my ham from your instructions. Lovely and clear and simple to do.. Agree bit messy but it was lovely sitting stuffing my ham in the garden in the sunshine.
It also can help if you make an internal layer of muslin to make it sturdier. You can make a sleeve roll by tightly rolling old magazines. Then cover with muslin then with fabric and wool.
An extra layer isn’t necessary and may make it not work as well as you want the wood chipping to bounce the heat back to your garment. You get the sturdiness from the outer fabrics you use and how densely you pack the wood into it.
Hi Claire, you made this look really simple. A tip in terms of the denseness of the ham, I saw a blog where they used a food processor to break up the shaving to a finer consistency, to alleviate the fluffiness of the pet bedding. Thank you for sharing.
I love your enthusiasm Claire! Loved this video and can’t wait to make one for myself. The best part was the superstar cat appearance, a must have for future videos!
Great tutorial, I have a tailors ham but not a sleeve roll so you've inspired me to make one using an old woollen blanket! I didn't know you could get /use hamster bedding for the inside - thanks for your great video!
Hi Claire, thank you, will be making one (I've only been sewing for over 45 years and always managed without one) and I didn't do one before now because I wasn't sure what to stuff it with. Love from New Zealand x
I woke up thinking ‘what’s that thing called you use to press armhole sleeves?’ Then I found your terrific tutorial and pattern. I don’t think we have hamster sawdust where I live in Spain, or even hamsters, but I’ll look in the pet superstore today. My cat Sara helps me in my sewing room too, passing me the pins, unthreading the cotton etc. Thanks Claire, happy sewing everyone!
Hi Claire- thanks for this lovely tutorial. This is exactly how I made mine a couple of years ago. I got a wool scarf from the charity shop and an old pillowcase. Worth leaving it to settle for a day and packing some more into the ham. Great idea about the spoon. I use my ham all of the time 🤓🏴. p.s. I gave the remaining stuffing to my friend who has a rabbit 🐇
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I ran off to the shops for hamster bedding & made myself one. I added a little lavender essential oil to the sawdust, so I can get wafts of lavender as I press those darts/ curved seams.
Thanks, Claire! To avoid some of the mess, hold the empty cover in a bowl with a jam funnel pushed into the opening. Hold securely whilst putting the saw dust into the cover. Keep pushing it down firmly as you go. Any mess is contained in the bowl. Your pattern is a lovely shape!
I've never thought of this as a necessity just because I didn't want to pay for one. But I think having this would be really nice to have. Thanks for the instructions so now I can make my own! I love the hamster bedding idea. I might just use your ideas and go ahead and make a sleeve roll as well as making me my own tailors clapper with a block of soft wood.
Great idea! We made these in my high school advanced clothing class 45(😬) years ago. I still use it in my alterations shop. That second stitching is the reason they can last forever! I enjoy your charming videos!
I bought one as I was convinced I wouldn’t be able to get it stuffed and it’s awful and saggy within a couple of uses . You’ve inspired me to give it a go
Great instructions Claire. Thank you. I have been using one I made years ago and filled it with scraps, but if I can get sawdust, I will do one like yours. xx
I picked up some wool scraps and have been wondering what I was going to do with it but the wool is so pretty and now I know! I’ll have to go get some wood shavings soon! Thanks so much for showing us how to do this!
My homemade hams are stuffed with wood pellet cat litter or equine horse bedding pellets. They turn to sawdust when damp so you can steam and stuff to capacity for a firmer ham.
Thank you for the tutorial! I made a ham last year and it's comically small since I'd never seen one in person and had no idea of the dimensions. And all those different camera angles at the sewing machine were fantastic, that must have taken ages to shoot!
Thank you. It didn’t take that long. I had both my camera and my phone set up at different angles and moving the phone is quick and easy. Editing it was another matter though lol 😂
"Cats are not required - could someone please tell them that?" LOL, subbed. Plus you sound like a local (I'm in Enfield, you sound distinctly like my people. :) )
I have a quick question I know that I am over a year late but do you have to use wool for the bottom ... I have only cotton fabric due to my mother being allergic to wool.
I think wool is the best option. You just don’t want anything synthetic as it will melt under the iron. Perhaps ask your local shop if they have a scrap or order a tiny amount.
Hi. The top is the Adrianne top by diby club. I’ve made a few of these now and have a video on that pattern here ruclips.net/video/dqwzGyA9wz8/видео.html
Thanks Milli! No I didn’t. I wouldn’t do that as I wanted stability in the fabric. Hope this helps. Saying that the cotton I used was cotton twill which did have some spandex in it.
How much of that bedding pack did you use for the ham? o.o Also, i guess this is next on my to-do list. i might make it more like a pillow, with a sort of lining inside..

I’m so pleased to help. This comment made my day thank you for sharing.
Maravilhoso o seu trabalho, gostei muito.😊👏👏👏👏👏👏❤🌼👍
I have an Eddie Bauer plaid wool jacket that will get a new life as a ham. Thanks so much for this great tutorial.
Thanks didn't know I needed one, but I'm off to make one as I'm making a halter boned top for my granddaughter and this is going to make the pressing easier.

wow nice and easy thankyou
I used old magazines in an old sock for my sleeve ham, worked a charm for years
Great ideal, thanks.

Interesting, thanks for sharing!
Simple and straightforward. Thank you!

Thank you! Haha I may have to negotiate with treats!
Thank You Claire,Just What I was looking for ,An asked for Christmas gift for my daughter -inlaw you make it look so easy.

A sleeve roll is next on my list!!
Thanks so much, Claire! I've been wanting/needing a tailor's ham for a while now. Thank you for the free pattern and sewing instructions!
It was great, thank you very much!👌😍🥰
Thanks for this tutorial! Very useful, Iwas after a taylor ham self made and found the one I'll try! 😍
Thank you for your video!
Thank you for the tutorial...The best I've ever seen ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Excellent. Thank you.....!!
Hi Claire, thank you, will be making one (I've only been sewing for over 45 years and always managed without one) and I didn't do one before now because I wasn't sure what to stuff it with. Love from New Zealand x
Enjoy making it, I had fun!! X
I'm totally making one! I've used a rolled up towel when desperate 😂

Thanks for your tutorial. Super easy and very informative. Now to see if I have a piece of wool.
Thank you for this demo, you've made it so simple! ❤️

Nice touch!
Awesome tutorial! Thanks so much!
Loved it. Thank you.
Thanks Claire. Been wanting to make one, but couldn't get my head around drafting the pattern or what the heck to put in it. Beauty, well done xx
Thanks for sharing!!!
Terrific video!! Thanks!!

Thanks! It was drafted from my shop bought one
Love your posts. Gonna make me a ham!
Thank you! Yay!!
Thanks my dear for this tutorial, I always wanted to know how to make one. I may have to use something else for stuffing. But it turned out very good.
I never thought a person could make their own ham. You made it look so easy. Might just give it a try!
It’s soooo easy!!
Girlfriend you get the crown; I'm going to save money making this, Thank You. 😊

Great! I agree, they’re overpriced but you can make one for next to nothing so why not huh.

Thank you!
Excellent tutorial Clair. This will be so use full to so many people, including me.Thank you for sharing this.hugs xxJean.
I bought one as I was convinced I wouldn’t be able to get it stuffed and it’s awful and saggy within a couple of uses . You’ve inspired me to give it a go
You are the cutest!!! Thanks for sharing this video!!!
Thank you
You made it easy to follow instructions. Thank you! Have a Jesus Christ Merry Christmas, and a Jesus Christ Blessed New Year!! ❤
Great instructions Claire. Thank you. I have been using one I made years ago and filled it with scraps, but if I can get sawdust, I will do one like yours. xx
Thanks for the video! I'm a beginner at sewing and this is exactly the kind of project I need.
It’s a GREAT beginner project!
Thank you claire
I picked up some wool scraps and have been wondering what I was going to do with it but the wool is so pretty and now I know! I’ll have to go get some wood shavings soon!
Thanks so much for showing us how to do this!
Happy to help!
Yay! I bought some pet sawdust so now I can start !
Yay that’s fab! Enjoy!
Thanks
Place a rolled up magazine in the ham . It will unroll and become a large funnel. Much easier, learned from another crafter. Thanks
Given you’re using it for pressing curves I would advise against this. You need it compact but pliable.
Thank you,one more thing to add to the list,😁
Such a quick make if you have a spare hour! Even half hour...
This is great, thank you so much!! 😍
Thanks for this tutorial, I’ve been wanting to make one for ages 👏x
Maravilhoso, gostei muito.👏👏👏👏👏👏❤🌼👍
My homemade hams are stuffed with wood pellet cat litter or equine horse bedding pellets. They turn to sawdust when damp so you can steam and stuff to capacity for a firmer ham.
I never would have thought to use that!
What a great idea 😺
Thank you Claire! I don't have one of these, only the sleeve one. The tailors hams are to dear to buy in the shops. Thanks for the measurements. 👍💖
I thought that too.
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you, Claire - I need to make one! :)
Thank you!
Fabulous! I've had this on my to-do list for a while, so I appreciate the pattern & fabric & all the other stuff!😻
Great!
Here's an idea for filling it..... Use a canning funnel :) Works great :)
Love this demo! A wide mouth funnel for canning and a big bowl would be helpful with this worthy project.3>
Maybe fill a piping bag with the sawdust to help with the filling - great tutorial. :-)
Great tutorial! I didn't know that they were filled with wood shavings!
I remember seeing somewhere it's not shavings, but more fine than that, like sawdust? But in a pinch the shavings can also work.
As Sapphire said below probably not when made professionally but for our purposes this works well.
"Cats are not required - could someone please tell them that?" LOL, subbed. Plus you sound like a local (I'm in Enfield, you sound distinctly like my people. :) )
Nope I’m not from your neck of the woods. 😊
Excellent of to the pet shop lol
Never imagined a comment saying that before this week 😂
I have a quick question I know that I am over a year late but do you have to use wool for the bottom ... I have only cotton fabric due to my mother being allergic to wool.
This is the easiest tutorial I’ve seen, thank you. Does it have to be wool? as I don’t have any wool fabric scraps. 🧶🌈🍓
I think wool is the best option. You just don’t want anything synthetic as it will melt under the iron. Perhaps ask your local shop if they have a scrap or order a tiny amount.
❤❤❤
Using a large funnel (like to fill jars of marmalade) to fill the cushion will help avoid the mess.
The sawdust would not flow through a funnel.
I want the top you are wearing in this video. If you made it, where can i get the pattern, please? (I'll make it and the ham this month 🙂)
Hi. The top is the Adrianne top by diby club. I’ve made a few of these now and have a video on that pattern here ruclips.net/video/dqwzGyA9wz8/видео.html
i have a second-hand ham but in case that one ever busts, ill know how to make a new one!
This was so cool! Thank you! May I ask, did you cut your wool piece on the bias?
Thanks Milli! No I didn’t. I wouldn’t do that as I wanted stability in the fabric. Hope this helps. Saying that the cotton I used was cotton twill which did have some spandex in it.
@@Penguinandpear But in the end, you have that tool and it will be way better than nothing!!! :) You are the best!
How much of that bedding pack did you use for the ham? o.o Also, i guess this is next on my to-do list. i might make it more like a pillow, with a sort of lining inside..
I used just over half of it. I have enough left (I hope) for a sleeve roll.
Do you have or know of a pattern on how to make a cape out of a coat or jacket ?
Not out of a coat or jacket. Seamwork have a cape pattern though.
Fred heard you say ham...
10.5 or 11.5, I think it is 10.5
