I love adding hanging baskets to my yard!!! Everything looks so beautiful with those colorful annuals. Another thing I like to do is add small solar powered lights in the pots, this way at night it lights up the baskets and creates a whimsical glow. I recommend trying it out it looks so gorgeous, and you get to appreciate the subtle color in the dark.
Yours is the only video I watched all night that actually told me how to plant in these coco mats, that came with a hanger I bought. So much confusion on these. Some were indicating I had to soak them in water before planting in them, and never got round to do any actual planting. You made it simple, and you know way more than me!
I just discovered you this year and I have to say you have given me so much inspiration. I've been gardening on my (small) property for 23 years and watching your video has jump-started me this year to redo some beds to give them new life. Your viewers also ask some great questions; you have one of the most supportive communities that I have found on RUclips. Well done and many thanks.
I think a lot of us feel that way since we have discovered her channel. So ambitious, yet not overwhelming and as a bonus we get to see adorable Benjamin every now and again, plus the cat and dog! Lol!
1:16 I found the key is to line the cocofiber liner inside with two layers of gardening plastic. You can poke a few holes for the drainage, and also if you were wanting to tuck a plant through liners. This has decreased the wasted watering, and improved the happiness of plants in them during summer.
A trick I do is take plastic and put it in the bottom of the coco basket and poke holes for drainage. It really helps retain moisture and keeps the coco liner looking nice from year to year :)
@@dianneweie1484I put black garden plastic sheet cut to size and put in basket before putting in the coir liner. I poke holes at the bottom. You can also use black garbage bags. It keeps in the moisture and also helps to stop birds stealing bits of the liner. This works in very hot Central Australia
Coffee with Laura and some basic info is always a good way to start the day! I am hoping to get some baskets at work that will be pretty as well as bring in some butterflies, bees and hummingbirds! Thanks for this and I can't wait for the next part!
Thanks for showing basket sizes. In three weeks I’ll be plant shopping for 40 hanging baskets including window boxes throughout our backyard. Excited to get going as well. Happy gardening.

Thank you Laura, once again for this wonderful video, I am loving all of the great ideas that I am incorporating into my small yard, and now that our weather is getting nicer I am so excited to get my pots and baskets and flower beds planted up with all these beautiful colorful plants, I feel like this year my yard is going to look amazing, and I have you to thank for all of your great ideas and continuing inspiration. Looking forward to your next video, bye for now.
I've always worried about how much water runs through my hanging baskets, so here is what I do. I place a large bucket under the basket, run the water through (usually about 3 gallons) and take the bucket of water to my vegetable garden. I use it for my containers. I'm all about conserving water.
I only recently discovered your channel and now it's one of my daily rituals. We just bought a house this winter and I'm so excited to start planning what I want to plant and your channel is making that task less intimidating. Much love from NS, Canada.
I did follow your advice last year and I bought a beautiful hanging basket and I sat it on a gazing ball base and filled it with beautiful trailing plants inside and in the sides. I added a thriller and a bunch of spillers! A tiny shrub a put in there lasted all throughout every season and I will use it this Spring!
That's a very pretty hanging basket. So ornate! 'Picasso in Purple' is fabulous! What a beautiful bicolor! Purple is my favorite color, too! I'm so happy that it's planting season again! Thanks for sharing. 🌾💜
Yay!! Thanks so much for doing this series of videos on planting hanging baskets. I am ready to start doing my hanging baskets and was wondering about all the things you mentioned. Looking forward to the rest of these.
Will you do a video on installing a drip system for hanging baskets and somehow connecting it to a drip for landscaping? It’s a bit overwhelming. Thanks
I love the colors of the Supertunia Picasso flowers. I got a huge hanging basket a few years ago that was gorgeous. But oh boy did it stink! I couldn't figure out where the smell was coming from at first but soon traced it to the basket. I had to move it to the back of my yard. It stunk of dirty gym socks, especially when wet or in humid weather. I haven't tried them again since but I might this year. Maybe the trick is not letting the foliage get wet when watering.
I’ve read that adding a small, open diaper at the base of the planter will help to retain moisture. I tried it one year with some cheapies and I *think* it helped 🤷♀️ Worth a shot.
I went to the garden center yesterday. Still not a lot out in my area, but they are selling starter perennials which I thought was cool. First year seeing them out.
Hi Laura! I just watched this video and I just love the Supertunias in all their beautiful colors. They are just so rich looking. Now I don’t even look at the other kinds of Petunias. Lol, I also wanted you to know that I received my order of your Garden Answer Merch yesterday and I’m wearing it today! Thank you for all of your videos. I have learned so much from you.
Hi Laura. I know this video is older, but I have a question. What can I do to help my hanging baskets in this heat wave? Have you done a video on that? If not, maybe?? Please??!!!
I was disappointed that all four of my caladiums died very quickly this spring when they were planted. I know I used composted grass for the soil, very rich brown but I guess they didn't like it. Maybe they got too wet? What was the pH off? Help? I have done caladiums in that same spot for years with no problems. Scratching my head this year.
That's beautiful. That will be great, since I don't have a garden, I can plant some flowers in pots for my porch and still have a beautiful area :) so it will be nice to learn what will do well together.
I have found that if to take the center out of a new baby diaper with the beads to absorb the water, your plants can go much longer without watering. They retain a lot of moisture... And can in turn the roots can stay moist.
Dear Laura, endless thanks for your vidios, as fore many they lift my spirit and give great ideas. When I plant in my hanging planters I use landscape fabric before I put the soil in. I live in Iceland and its not the sun (I wish) ☺ that drays up the soil but the wind, maby you can use that idea, also the water dont run as fast through the soil 😍 .
I tried landscape fabric last year on a few of my baskets. It held too much water and they were stunted because of soggy feet. I am going to skip the fabric this year.
Hi Laura I love your videos , I thought you may want to share how I line my containers with super results. I simply use artificial lawn secured with cable ties. It allows water to drain through as I has little holes in it. My baskets only needed watering about once a week and the results were brilliant, maybe you could do a video of it on your channel, it would help many people with watering problems. Thanks again and I love your children Benjamin is so 🥰 when he’s helping you 🧎🏼 xx
I wanna say thank you first for sharing your ideas about garden designing and plant care. I hope you can post the result of this particular hanging plant you did. Pop a clean diaper in the bottom of your baskets and that will help retain moisture. Get the extra absorbent diaper in any brand. The plastic of the diaper helps keep water in and the gel beads in the diaper soak up and blow up with water. This is the only thing I can find that will keep my baskets going in the direct Sun..

I just planted flowers in a coco fiber and the water runs through it and onto my patio. What do you recommend, something underneath it? Im a beginner and you have helped me alot with your videos, Thank you.
rockmom h Laura talks about the quality of coco fiber in other videos but to keep it short: maybe you are using a low quality coco fiber. The higher quality ones are thicker so maybe your is just thinner and therefore the water is running out. Check your garden center for a different coco fiber and maybe replant the hanging basket to keep the plants happy and your patio clean 🌻
@@MsSusieStone I bought the coco fiber at Lowe's and it does seem a little thin. I will look around some more and see what I can find. Thank you, Susie. ☺

Whuuuuuttt?? Never would have thought! Good tip!
I use diapers on my baby, but they don't release the moisture, so why use them? Confused.
Diapers are designed to trapped liquids coming from outside to prevent babies having a wet feels. So i doubt it can hold up Moisture. 🤔🤔
It’s the crystals in the diaper that do the job. In Mexico some agronomist partly created this to add to soil for water retention.
Btw, the actual polymer is also sold.
Can't wait for the rain to stop and the planting to begin. Gardening is just the cheapest therapy there is
