    It's a pity that this Fiat had totally useless tires for this trail. It 'performed' as I was expecting.
    I wonder if one of the 4x4 trucks , like a Ram or a Silverado with highway tires on it would have done a whole lot better. Now obviously, they would have had more articulation in the axles, but I'm curious as to what the road tires would have done ( or not done ).

    I always enjoy these videos. However, I will comment that the 500X is meant to be a street car with excellent on the road driving characteristics and traction in the tradition of a European family car. The tuning leans more towards on-road capability, while its cousin, the Renegade is geared more towards off-road driving conditions. While the two vehicles share the same chassis and drivetrain, they are, by intent, meant to perform two different roles in the FCA lineup. For example, the 500X has sharper turn-in than the Renegade, for crisper handling. Directional stability and high-speed driving also have the edge over the Renegade.
    It can be argued that what Nathan says about appealing more to the heart than the brain is not really the case. The 500X is not meant to do all the off-roading truck biased SUVS are geared towards, just as those cars can't carve up a mountain road in the Alps. Most crossover owners will never use their car even remotely similar to what was seen in the video, so the flip side of the heart/ brain argument is why suffer with a street car that drives more like a truck? I'd argue that the 500X has demonstrated it has all the capability most crossover shoppers need and that appeals to the brain as well as the heart.

      Fiat500USA.com, what nathan meant by more for the heart and not the brain was/is that it limited by its own capabilities and more for/as a toy or dinky than most of its competitors

    Considering the Subaru Crosstrek (a benchmark competitor in the segment) is full time AWD and manages to achieve 29mpg combined, the Fiat 500X AWD only pulling off 24mpg is complete rubbish. Giving up 1 or 2 mpg to the competition is forgivable. Lagging behind by 5 mpg is heresy.

      This 2.4l Multiair engine is dreadful in every car.

    • @xlr8also
      @xlr8also 7 лет назад +1

      Subaru's weak engine makes 148 hp vs 180 hp for the Multiair. Since it takes fuel and air to make horsepower which engine would get less gas mileage...this is a test.

    • @edwardpeters4700
      @edwardpeters4700 7 лет назад

      Since when is "who has more power under the hood" the primary driver within this class of cars? As for making horsepower I think we can agree it goes well beyond which motor sucks more air and throws more fuel at it in the requisite proportions. In particular some engines do a dramatically better job of managing parasitic losses than others (roller rockers vs non, more efficient intake/exhaust porting and manifolds, better quality lubricants, more precise fuel injection etc.).
      If you want a smallish SUV with decent grunt the 2017 Forester 2.0XT Premium rings in at $30,170 USD MSRP (vs $29465 USD for this Fiat) and puts out 250HP/258lbft. It also manages to do 25mpg combined (vs the Fiat 500X AWD's 24mpg) in spite of its larger size, and 70 more HP. Admittedly the turbo adds significant volumetric efficiency in this case and does require 91 octane. The real world cost difference running premium fuel works out to about $200/year driving 45/55 highway/city for 15000 miles/year as per EPA estimates.
      www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=37367&id=38183
      In the end by all means purchase whatever vehicle best suits your purposes. Commentary regarding the Fiat 500X AWD's rubbish fuel economy relative to other vehicles in the class is fair play.

    Same car in UK with 170 ps 1.4 turbo or 2.0 turbo diesel hits 62 mph (100kmh) in just over 8.5 secs. Why have such a big engine that is so poor in performance and fuel economy???? A Dacia duster here( Might be Renault duster in US and Canada) has a 110hp 1.5 diesel and can break 12 secs to 60. And is about the cheapest 4x4 you can buy new.
