I LOVE your channel! I’m a mom of 4- I’ve never taken an art class in my life- I’ve learned more about sketching and art from you than I have in my entire 34 years of life. I want to write and illustrate children’s books and I’ve been keeping a sketchbook of daily life. It’s just so fun to learn from you! Thank you! So so much! 😊
Love your loose confident style. I tend to make everything too straight and perfect and I am never happy because I want a very impressionistic loosey-goosey result. I am trying to hold my pen at the very tip and I will also try to stand up and extend my arm so I have less control. I love the idea of using water soluble Inc. Have you ever tried the Elegant Writer? When you finish your drawing and wet the ink, it bleeds into a beautiful teal and then if you dab it, it becomes teal and pink. It’s absolutely mesmerizing. Thanks for your great videos!
Your videos are always inspirational. No RUclips in 1983 when I struggled to improve living in St Ives, Cornwall. I left my pens and brushes in a cupboard for decades😢. Then I stumbled across your videos and I have improved to no end. Both 😊 and 😢. Toby keep your videos coming!
Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed tutorials. I am just diving into art as a 37 year old single mom of two and your videos are my favorite. Your love of art really comes through in your videos. ❤
I love your line and wash style. I'm very much a "paint by numbers" person...I'm giving this a try. Either I will learn to love painting like this ,.or I'll just continue to love looking at them.
I’m a brand new follower and am so interested in your methods and teaching style. I am a long time watercolor artist but am not at all experienced in urban sketching. I have my pens and sketchbook at the ready and plan to correct that with your videos here on RUclips and skillshare courses. Can’t wait!!
I’ve done watercolor for many years, but I’ve lost my love for traditional painting, though not my love for wanting to make art. This is a fun new try for me. Thank you so much!
I've also published a SkillShare class on this exact subject - join one of 40 completely free places here -- skl.sh/41fPOXn More in depth sketching classes on www.sketchloose.co.uk as well :)
Thank you so much for the inspiration! I love to try new ideas. The last time I used a water soluble ink I felt I had made a mistake. Now it looks like I could have claimed it was intentional. The next time it will be intentional.
I have been binge watching your videos for a few weeks now, and JUST realized you're from my hometown! I spy some familiar places, like the Chequers pub (did anyone buy that yet?)... and there's the bridal shop that I went to last time I was home for my niece! 🤯
That was really great. I like how you left sections white. I’ve never thought about using regular ink, got my fountain pen loaded with waterproof ink, so will need to switch it up. Thanks!
I use this technique a lot... It allows you to put shadows quickly and it's more fluid and lively than hatching... It brings blur and life to the sketches... I've tried a lot of different ink colours (and sometimes combined 2 on the same drawing)... One of the colours that gives the best results in my opinion is "Lie de Thé" by J. Herbin: it is an affordable ink, brown/sepia in colour with green undertones that appear when washed out. I love it. Moreover, it doesn't wash out completely and the original lines remain partially visible, so the drawing doesn't disappear too much in the areas where the brush was used... 👍
This was awesome Toby. I keep coming back to your videos as I enjoy your style so much - loose & interesting - not precise. I'm enjoying making that kind of art. I have 2 fountain pens and I love them. Can you recommend the best waterproof ink for my Lamy pen please?
I use carbon black ink - check out www.urbansketch.co.uk/supplies for links and on my blogs there is also a blog where I talk a lot about inks and pens etc
Love this technique Toby - especially the bottles of booze (for some reason - ha ha). Another one to have a go at!!! (Slow down I can't keep up with your output LOL!)

Syntopia has said it brilliantly - you definitely don't have to - I enjoy the effect it gives, but I will lift my pen up and either pick up the line the same place, elsewhere, or not at all. But yes, aiming for continuous lines gives you a loose impressioninstic drawing.
Most of my work is urban (small town urban but still urban), almost all of it includes urban and architectural elements. Urban sketching is the idea of sketching en Plein air, usually architectural in nature, but also it can be people, food, cafe sketching and so much more. This video you're commenting on, for example, is certainly an urban scene. I hope that helps explain 😊
@@TobySketchLoose It does thank you. I've been following you for about a week, love your videos. I'm a beginner, and just started learning how to mix paint. Made some wonderful colours tonight. Do you have any videos on how to read a colour mixing chart, please?

What a lovely post. Good luck with your dreams and you will do it if you believe. Thought, word, deed.
flicking of fountain pen with brush I found to be so fun!
Thank God for RUclips. Instant education.
Another wonderful way to advance our drawing, and enjoyment. Thanks, Toby!
My pleasure!

I have not, but I'll look it up! Glad you enjoyed 😊
Hi! I love the Elegant Writer pens as well! Have you been able to find any with a fine tip rather than the chisel tips? Thanks!
I really liked the way you taught the technique. Thank you so much
Awesome, thank you!

Awesome to hear!
Another fun video Toby. Have you tried the Elegant Writer pens. The black ink splits into green and pink!
I've not! But several people have recommended... I spot a purchase in my future haha
Thank you for sharing Toby. The coloured inks look great 😊

Love this idea but I have to learn to loosen up more
You can do it!!
Thanks
Welcome, very kind and generous of you :)
Hi..you explain yourself well, love the ink wash concept,I know they have ink in any color you want, hope I can get some to take back to my planet 👽
I hope so too!
Really enjoyed thus technique. Should go out and get another H2O brush. Fun, fun, fun.

Excellent tutorial Toby. Will this work using waterproof ink or will it dry up too soon and become insoluble?
You'd have to be very quick, combining steps one and two, so it's possible but not as simple
Love this technique Toby - especially the bottles of booze (for some reason - ha ha). Another one to have a go at!!! (Slow down I can't keep up with your output LOL!)
Haha thanks Martin :)
Is it important to draw continuously without lifting your pen? Is this how you achieve a loose impressionistic drawing?
It´s not a must.
I do this without continious lines.
It depends only on your preference !

Or somewhere else. 🙂

Check my supplies link :) all suitable for beginners.
Why do you call yourself 'Urban' when most of your work is 'rural'?... Is it just 'artistic'?
Most of my work is urban (small town urban but still urban), almost all of it includes urban and architectural elements.
