Carpenters (Quad Mix) Top Of The World HD 1080

  • Re-upped and tweaked, remastered from the CD-4 quad LP, with a master quality version of a performance on German TV, the quad mix actually uses Karen's original 1972 first vocal from the "A Song For You" album, but with the instrumentation overdubs done later when it was released as a single. This is the rarest version of the song. I hope you enjoy it.

This performance was playbacked. Everyone here knows Karen could've done it live but the ZDF didn't allow it and it's why you only see Richard and Karen here and not the rest of the musicians.

Randomly remembered this song and her voice today. She passed away in 1983, just five years after this performance. She died from complications of anorexia nervosa. Looking at this video would make you think that she’s one of the happiest people on earth, singing a joyful song. Yet we have no idea the internal struggles someone is going through. It also makes me think that someone who struggles with mental health realizes the true value of carefree moments, when they feel at ease. Hence why she sings this song not just with her voice but also her heart. She was someone who knew the worth of joyful moments and happiness. Blissful moments when there is “not a cloud in the sky” and not a worry on the mind. A respite from one’s own internal struggles.

FUN FACT: On that same show, The Carpenters and Abba shared the same billing on that particular Episode. Where at the backstage, Richard and Karen first heard of Abba performed Thank You For The Music. As per Richard, he was amazed by that masterpiece and so they borrowed it afterwards to sing in a particular tv show. You can watch and see The Carpenter's version of that song and witness how good they were. But ofcourse, they admitted that no one could do it best like Abba. It was just so satisfying to see legends doing another legend's works with great respect and humility. And so, Hail to the Genuine Musicians!! Please, bring them back today, God of Music! 🙏🙏

When CD-4 and SQ Quadraphonic vinyl records were released in the seventies, variation to the music mix may occurred, sometime additional instruments and/or vocals in order to enhance the Quad listening experience. Some titles such as Aqualung LP by Jethro Tull, tracks such as Locomotive Breath & Aqualung, The Doors Greatest Hits LP tracks such as Riders On The Storm. The vinyl was usually pressed in Japan using heavier grade records at 180grams with emphases on noise reduction and special packaging. Japan at the time was a world leader in quality at a reasonable price point. As audio digital technology did not exist the analogue technology was close to being the best ever. Even now audiophiles seek analogue technology from the seventies either from Japan with some USA exceptions for equipment and records/content.
The Carpenters were part of A&M Records and from a Quad perspective were the CD-4 format, typically 4 discrete channels and were beautifully mixed with care, low distortion and attention to detail.

A brilliant vocal as always. I sometimes wonder how/why We've Only Just Begun, Superstar, Rainy Days and Mondays, Yesterday Once More, Hurting Each Other, For All We know, Only Yesterday and especially Goodbye to Love did not reach number 1 and Top of the World did! As Richard said, a catchy album track, but not one they thought would be a number 1 hit. This, along with Please Mr. Postman reached the top spot (and Close to You of course). I think the others, mentioned above, were far better songs. Such is timing, taste and what the radio stations pushed at the time. (That's not taking from this version which is crystal clear and well done by the poster!) Karen looks incredibly beautiful in this video. She had such an infectious smile - her beautiful brown eyes lit up her whole face. When she got really sick, this drained from her face. Such a shame she did not get a chance to recover and achieve some of her wishes in life like a happy marriage, kids, etc
