  • “Well, You’re The Designer...” is a podcast that explores the challenges designers face while tackling unclear or uninspiring client briefs.
This time round, we discuss a common request from clients at the briefing stage:
    “Show me a few versions…”
Often followed up by something along the lines of, “I’ll know it when I see it!”
Requesting multiple designs might sound like a great way to get some different options to ponder over. That’s until things get out of hand. The boys trade anecdotes about how analysis paralysis ruined a couple of brands before they even had a chance to trade.
Matt and Rich cover all the ins and outs of the issue, before facing the ultimate question: reasonable request or client clanger?

Starting my career in a copy centre and now running my magazine production business, I've dealt with a variety of clients for more than three decades - the majority falling into doing urgent work quickly and for free, often you don't receive a 'thanks' for pulling all the stops out!
Your stories so resonate with me. I certainly concur with colour differences - running the same job a year apart. The client compares it to a previously printed job complaining why the colours are different. When you explain, they simply get lost in the science. I used to joke that digital presses have a winter setting and a summer one.
The danger today is keeping hold of experienced designers who do understand the technicalities of print while trying to earn a half-decent living, but we're living in a world where anyone who can turn on a computer is a designer.
Keep up the great work, chaps. I, for one, will continue to tune in. 👍
