I think the slapping gave Hadrien even more space. It was like he was playing a drum groove. Just enough of the root notes to reference the track and a percussive beat with loads of space. The accompanist always plays chords on these bass jams and it muddies the sounds sometimes. I think this really worked in my opinion.
