- I've been trying to get my hands on the Panasonic Lumix S5II since its release earlier this year. With the new phase-detect AF, 6K Full Frame Open Gate Recording, and industry-leading stabilization on the L-Mount, it had me more than intrigued. Here are some of my findings after using it on a trip as my only photo and video camera.

I love that it's just the Leica SL but with more stickers and coked up specs. The colours remind me of the Ricoh GRIII, which I'm a fan of. I'd like to see you adapt the Summilux to it sometime.
This looks like the best hybrid rn.
I picked up the Lumix S5 Mark II right after it came out. Finally finished reading the manual before my big trip. The lens selection is great and I've got the complete Lumix 1.8 prime series. The system is a great long term investment.
I just got the camera. Have the GH6 from a few years ago. Full Frame is awesome. Workout videos looking better.
Great video, those colors from Vancouver are amazing! May I ask if/what LUT you used for them?
Loved this video Benj. I've owned this camera since its release and to be honest I've never really got on with it. I tend to use it more as backup and for dance floor shots at weddings when I'm not using my Q2. However on watching this video you've give me the great idea of finding some nicer glass that perhaps will encourage me to pick it up more. Can I ask, what lens was the 50mm f0.95 lens you fitted to it? That Zeiss looked beautiful too.
I think that the LUT functionality of this camera is the greatest thing somebody put in a camera ever. I really want it and I hate it that Sony will add this years later. You can actually shoot film simulations incamera without the need for editing later, you can import your own LUTs made in Lightroom or any software and just shoot without editing later. And you will not miss dynamic range because you can shoot VLOG+LUT... Why nobody is talking about this it is HUGE!
One thing that I don't think you mentioned but will be nice to hear, is just how clean these files are in low light by the way. For wedding photographers out there, shooting in low light environments (evening speeches for example) these files come out clean!
Thanks for the video Benj and really happy you have come over to L mount as well as M, as have I. I thought you sold your Zeiss 35 f1.4? Would be great to see some content on using M and prime L mount lenses with the s5ii.
I'm not a videographer or cinematographer at all, but if I felt like I could consistently create video that looked like your family clips around 7:45, I would become a videographer today, lol. It's the most 16mm-looking digital video I've ever seen.
Try the 50mm 1.4 lumix pro lens, you will love it!!! It’s my workhorse on my Leica SL2-s. Great video!!!
Thank you for the video! Do you think that s5 ii would be better than Canon r6 ii in terms of photography?
I do video, but not very professional, mostly shoot photos.
I don't like Sony's too digital "computer" look and never used the Lumix cameras, so I'm wondering would S5 ii be better option than R6 ii
Hi Benj, the feature that really excites me but no one is talking about is the ability of using custom LUTs baked into the footage and JPEGs. Its like Fuji film simulations on steroids. Specially for personal use, I don't want to waste time at the computer editing pictures. Have you tried that feature? Does it work well or does it have some glaring usability issues?
Would love to know your thoughts.
I’m waiting on a couple of lenses to try out, but it’s 100% on my list to make some content around!
Russell Kent Nicholls on youtube did a video on this and the results were great. That video is what made my by a S5II. Now I mainly use a LUT whenever I shoot on my S5II for photos
@@chronocross85 I looked in his channel and didn't find any video playing the bake in LUT feature. Just one video about to adapt LUTs to the Panasonic. But not much else. Are you talking about a different video?
That’s a lot of camera for the money. It would certainly be a viable option for someone purchasing their first SL lenses, saving on the cost of the body.
Hmm, could the s5ii with it's phase detect AF paired with the Leica SL 28/50 be the kit Benj has been waiting for?! hahaha.
I’m hoping to pair my s5ii with the Leica sl2 and have lenses that can go between both bodies.
Same. I’ve ditched my Sony a9ii’s and gone SL and S5iix. I like the better built bodies, features to price ratio, and the L mount glass (non Leica) have the right balance of size and performance.
HI
I currently shoot with an older fuji Xt3 and im looking to upgrade. Im trying to decide between 2 full frame cameras. The new Lumix s5iix or the older Sony A7siii.
My use case is video only and im currently focused on realestate videos and some weddings, client work ect.
My main concern is for filming real estate in 4k60. What would look better a7siii 4k60 or the lumix s5ii 4k60 cropped? Most high end videographers in the real estate industry use a7siii. Taking everything into account, noise, low light, Dynamic range, image quality ect which is better.
My goal to get the best quality for 4k 60 video.
Thank you
Hi Benj, would you recommend this camera for both real estate video and photography? Thanks!
Absolutely. Even the kit lens would be a great starting point for that. 16mm is best but 20mm is still fairly wide if needed
@@benjhaisch Thanks for recomendstions. ☺️
Very curios about the colors, if you had to compare them to mainstream system, which do you think is closest?
Leica and Panasonic actively collaborate, and this first became evident in the colour signature. Many examples online, and it definitely and directly overlaps with Leica. The LUTs feature lets you design your own looks for stills and video.
Even though a bit different in pricing, for a 50/50 hybrid shooter, which is the winner, a7iv or s5ii?!
Can it take photos (using whatever settings you have saved as default) whilst you’re filming?
I saw some reviews about moire and other artifacts due to the lack of AA filter to the sensor. did you notice any of it ?And if so is it going to be a problem on professional work?
I haven’t yet, no, but I’ll keep a look out for future follow up videos. I’ll try to review the current stuff as well
Did you test Leica M Lenses on this body. I've an M6 and would love to use some M glass on this camera if it works well.

Great video Benj! I have wondered how the external BRAW output from this compares to the image quality of the BMPCC 6K Pro. Does anyone have experience with this?
I’ve never shot any BRAW and don’t have access to a 6K Pro, sorry!
I have a s5IIX and the Video Assist 7, but haven't compared it to a BlackMagic Camera. One thing I've noticed though, is that it doesn't do 6k open gate through the hdmi, which is a bummer :(
@@gurramann That’s interesting to hear, I don’t think anyone has talked about that either.
@@FreshWaterLake No, I haven't heard anything about it either. Could maybe (?) be enabled in a firmware update?
how would you compare the Autofocus performance in comparison to sony?
I bought the s5ii as a hybrid camera however I had to return it as I found the autofocus for stills to be inaccurate and very slow at finding focus. On the plus side the open gate for video is a great feature and the ibis is class leading. I hope in the future they can release a firmware update that brings the AF for stills up to par.
Good to know, I have some primes coming so hopefully it’ll be helpful to *really* test that. Everything I did with the 20-60 was money, but the DOF is obviously a little more forgiving there :)
@@benjhaisch thanks and yes it would be good to know how you get on with the photography AF. I’ll keep an eye out for future videos. FYI I was using the Panasonic 35mm 1.8.
The camera isn't really built for picture taking. Its more for Video. Also think its depends on what lens your using, Understanding AF is also something i took time to learn.
@@orinorio1 I was using the Panasonic 35mm 1.8 so it should be calibrated better than most lenses. Sony, Nikon, Fuji and Canon all have stellar AF for photo and video as a hybrid in all their recent cameras so Panasonic should do too in my opinion. I personally think the S5ii has been hyped to the video side for a reason and needs to address its issues with the photo AF problems.

where i will choose for photography? S5i or Xt5?
Ah that’s a good comp. The original S5 didn’t have the new AF system that this does, so while it’s full frame, you’d be lacking in that department depending on your use case. If you’re choosing between the S5II and the X-T5 it’s probably more about the system as a whole and whether you want full frame or APS-C.
@@benjhaisch Thank you. because i have S5 and XT3. thats why im choosing where to upgrade , to xt5 or S5ii
Supposedly this Camera can adapt to Canon EF Glass pretty well!
Hey Benj, sorry to be nitpiccky but I would have loved a complete review, and more you though on the actual image. A comparaison versus an M10 ? What about color depth ? Dynamic range ? Photo capabilities ? I know it's a sponsored video, but It feel very shallow compared to what you used us to see on your channel 🥴
Fwiw, I’m waiting on getting a few of their other lenses in before really testing in professional settings for photo stuff. Interesting that you’d want an M10 comparison, but I’ll make sure to add it on the follow up!
Thanks@@benjhaisch. I hope you didn't take it too harsh, it's hard to write some critizice without sounding harsh in comment, that is not my intention to be clear.
Let just say that I love M-mount lenses for their size and character, but not a huge fan of Range Finder camera, nor their prices. I would love to see a good camera that can take place of a M10 or M10R that has good color and don't cost more than 2500k$
As for video capabilities, it's always good to speak about color sampling, codecs, and dynamic range. But hey that my area of work so I'm super net picking here.
Take care !
Funny. Have been following you for a while. Really like your videos. Just realized you are a fellow Canadian :o)
Haha close! But I’m just below in the States but my brother and his family live up there :)
@@benjhaisch 😁
@@benjhaisch Tacoma people are like half Canadian half Alabama GI. So not far off.
Gh6 for me.
Is af really that great in photo? I heard only video ti shines
I’ll do a video on that once I get some primes in to try. It was great on the kit lens, but obviously is going to be a little more forgiving at those higher apertures.
Please do this I would apriciate this and I am not the only one ;)!
This is the best Hybrid camera for the price, It truth it should be more lol. The HAF is amazing If you haven't gotten this camera but thinking about it then stop thinking and get it, It has everything and more needed for shooting. The Lumix brand is growing for a reason.
You're from BC?
WA, but my brother lives in Ucluelet, BC.
Not sure what lens you are using, but there is a ton of red fringing with the video content.
Yeah, that’s a film emulation filter. Doesn’t have that on the flat file
@@benjhaisch Ah! 👍🏻
I noticed that too. On videos from RUclipsr iPhonedo and from others I noticed some blue spots when having strong lights coming in.
I am really interested in the X version. What stops me is the autofocus, such as that 95% of the people renting about Lumix actually got free cameresa and lenses. Otherwise, excellent content.
wait 'til you find out about Sony and it's influencers.
AF is no problem on this camera trust me. I sold my Sonys and now own two S5ii’s much nicer than my Sony stuff
@@IanSnape Hey, thanks for this reply. Are you sponsored my Panasonic in any shape or form?
@@Lu-sj6ni I know about them very well. Panasonic's are more low-key, though.
haha nah man, im just a good old camera guy who buys all my own shit@@potbtech
The video quality actually looks very bad in your examples. Except the Leica lens
