I think I might know how Balin's death would have gone. Unless the books go into more detail, this could be something. The upper lip/jaw looks split down the middle, which wouldn't make sense if he simply mummified with a fully intact jaw/upper lip. It also doesn't look like a gap in the teeth, but rather that the teeth were knocked out, since the split looks like it's deeper into the jaw itself. it looks like he was probably been stabbed in the face/mouth with a spear or sword, edges facing vertically. It makes sense, because the Moria orcs are short, and would be of comparable height to the Dwarves of Balin's expedition. Also, since he partially mummified where he fell, his teeth wouldn't naturally come loose as easily with time; but would stay in place longer than if be were buried in soil. Teeth tend to fall out in fully buried skulls, where slow decay and softening of the bone allows the teeth to come loose easier, and be knocked out by the shifting soil, roots, and rocks. The dry, dark conditions of the tomb would have slowed decay somewhat; as it was sealed for so long, allowing for wounds to be somewhat visible. We can see that the bodies are well enough preserved, alongside other natural materials; like clothing and the parchment/leather in the Book Of Mazarbul, which was in contact with his corpse the whole time; so a fully rotting corpse would have left it much more damaged. So yeah, it's speculation; but knowing the detail Peter Jackson's team went into for the movies' practical effects, I don't think it's too far fetched. I thought of all this because there was a facial reconstruction from the Battle Of Visby where a man had a split down the lip/jaw just like that. It was probably an axe strike.
hands up anyone who read The Hobbit when you were kids and then found out how Balin and his mates died in Moria and then cried
the movies for me. sadly I never had time to read the hobbit books.
and now finding out this. I am sad. (haven't seen the lord of the ring movies nor the hobbit movies in a while. so I forgot about balin's tomb in the lord of the rings)
I think Thorin and his nephews dying in The Hobbit was more tragic for me. It's pretty rough what happened to Balin, but we're only learning about it years after the fact.
“I don’t like green food”
Well maybe if you ate your vegetables you might have been able to hold your own boy.
The world/saga is so much bigger than all the movies. Would be nice with more well make movies before hobbit and between hobbit and lotr. I also want to know more about the Balrog and Melkar.
It feels like that universe can expand in movies like World of Warcraft does in games. Would be nice..
Divide and Conquer (Medieval 2 mod) allows you to play as Balin's Company and reclaim Moria.
If you're successful, you can become one of the most powerful factions in all of Middle Earth.
Noooo! Rip all of them
They fr said fuck it we balin
Ori looks like an annoying guy I went to high school with.
It seems that Gandalf had his suspicions it was overrun confirmed. Sad end for the dwarves.
Balin was shot in the back with an arrow by a Goblin. What a way for a hero to go.
NOOOO, despite the the many times I never connected the names to the faces, jeez now I’m sad
The last Boss of kazaad dum. The big balin
