- Henry Gilbey talks about the new Surf Seeks, a long cast metal lure from Savage Gear designed specifically for bass fishing.
Lure fishing for bass is becoming ever more popular as more and more anglers discover how much fun a lighter and more technical approach to fishing can be. The new Surf Seekers are a metal lure that will cast a long way, yet sinks slowly, designed with Henry Gilbey from the ground up to be the perfect lures covering a lot of water quickly. Ideal for violent surf conditions, but can also be fished in estuaries, reefs, rocks, beaches etc. In this video Henry talks through how he loves to use this lure and the action and techniques to help catch more Sea Bass
There are four colours to choose from; Green Silver, Blue Chrome, White Pearl and Black Pearl, as well as three sizes; 30g 35g and 40g.
Henry is located on a secluded beach in south east Cornwall that can be very productive in high surf conditions and Henry revels plenty of tips and tricks to help bass anglers think about their own fishing.

They are good , I surf fish for bass in Cornwall and these catch me lots of fish but they do chip after a few sessions if fished close to rocks and other features ....quick tip spray with heavy clear lacquer and they last a bit longer ....still awesome lure . One tip like Henry’s stop and start method ...this works with most lures in the sea as bait fish don’t swim and dart constantly...they rest in the upper layers of the surf and are carried by the current ....so stop your lure occasionally it’s amazing how many more hits you get
Great info, thanks!
I tried this today istead of a straight retrieve I twitched it with stop and goes and had many more fish
I use flatted copper pipe, shaped and weighted, to suit with anything really, and with, or without bead rattles, and painted whichever colour with nail varnish. Tweeted to sink, spin, rise, whatever, on the job with a pair of pliers. Works for me. Many thanks. Raymondo
Just been for a session down the beach using the exact same lure. What I've noticed though is after a few casts the lure came back with quite a bit of damage to the paint.
The beach had no snags only the smallest amount of weed in the water.
It seemed to damage itself via the large single hook smashing against the body as it landed after casting into the surf.
Yet to catch a fish with one, no problem at all using patchinko lures but time will tell.
I've caught more fish on a seeker, than I have on every other lure I've tried put together!
I've never had a fish, a take or a follow on a patchinko, so much so it hangs as a decoration in my garage now!
I firmly believe this is down to my retrieve style suiting the seeker, and not the suiting the patch, rather than any one lure being "better"
@@jasonleedham5678 Mackerel don't count haha. Even had Mackerel on a patchinko and Pollock. Might just be the area you fish.
@richardjones2811 I've only had a handful of mackerel on the seeker, mainly bass, had 32 on a seeker in 90 minutes one evening.
Another evening I had 17 bass for 17 casts, put a patch on, as I wanted to get a bass on a surface lure, 5 casts and nothing, back on the seeker and straight back in! Fish were high in the water too.
Last month I lost an easy 80+ in the surf on a seeker, so it's not just schoolies that love em!
It’s a well designed lure, I like the pronounced weight at back, probably helps balance the lure during mid flight to keep a nice streamlined shape for increased distance . Great tips on the “Spin-Stop” technique it’s should be in every lure fisherman tech library. Tightlines.
Hi, been beach fishing all my life, ( im 44) but only just got into lure fishing, just ordered one of the surf seekers in pearl black,
hopefully it catches me a fish as havent had one on a lure yet, loving lure fishing though, have 6 savage gear lures already that i picked up
with my savage gear bushwacker, got it all cheap off a friend :) now just need to try and catch a bloody fish on a lure lol
All the best
As well as being the only metal I have caught bass with, I've found this to be a great lure for pollack. They always hit on the pause in the retrieve.
Are you in witness protection Henry? 🤣💕 Great upload 😊🤟🐟
Hi Henry, do u think if we put both hooks together works good on seekers, too ? For fish like Bluefish ?
Tried one off a surf beach in the west of Ireland, didn't catch anything but I'm happy with the action and getting out back behind the last wave... surfer's watch out 🤣👍
I bought a nice shiny surf seeker, 30g casts really nice etc , but the paint started coming off after only a few casts, I never caught anything on it ( but I rarely do 😂). Then I lost it through a crack off due to an unseen wind knot , the paint definitely needs to be a bit more durable though
Same happens to me when using them. I think its the heavy single hook smashing into the lure body as it hits the water when casting.
@@richardjones2811 I won’t buy them again, the paint came off three others I bought too , very quickly, a bit disappointing after the hype to be honest,
@@c.h.fieldsports9876 When mine get a bit too smashed up I'm going to sand them down and spray them myself.
I'll do a proper job so they don't seem to disintegrate by themselves!
What would be the expected maximum casting distances for the 30 and 35g seekers in calm conditions?
Hi Henry need to pull you on a comment you said
In the video you said IT DONT ROTATE
So why dies Savage Gear say
360 rotation
Please explain
Love your fishing Henry,. Tell me Henry, was that Jess your border collie with you.
Love your bag … any info please …. Fabulous videos
If this doesn't convince you how well they work, nothing will!
go to poundland and get some epoxy. just bought some to go with the fuji rod wrapper but can also coat some metals. 👌
That's been precisely my experience over the last few years with the slimmer models, the feedback through the rod about currents is really dustinct and those spin-stop catches are such a buzz! Great idea to produce a broader profile too, nice one.
Been a great lure for me
What is the best size rod to use with these?
Is it best to use a flurocarbon leader connecting the lure to the braid ?
If it’s Rocky it helps
What kind of rod is that @henrygilbey?
I'm not Henry but I'd say it's one of the savage gear new range of SGS rod's 👍
Probably Shimano Lunamis...
Awesome video well explained :)
Caught a small bass first cast. Paint needs protecting
Aww Is that Henrys same dog from his fishing videos
Storm is a cool dog and loves the outdoors!
Must be old now I guess
It can't be the same dog ...
@@Unborn-Stillborn yer it would off passed away by now ?
No I think his old dog was called Jess. Not the same dog. Make great fishing companions! 🐕❤️🎣
Hi guys love the seeker on par with the westin 360, just bought a couple of surf seekers, Henry is right goes out like an absolute missile tried one on a short session lot of chips and damage to paint? Any advice.
Cheers
Were you fishing rough ground or getting plenty of action?
Savage Gear UK Hi just off a rock mark at high tide, test run.
Tbh bit narked off, am going out in the surf tmrw will see how it holds up.
Thats my biggest complaint with these excellent lures, the paint chips off so easy. A shame, but I tend to end up loosing it before it becomes any great issue to stop me catching fish :)
@@lucasj2260 yes mate we all seem to Chuck money into the sea on a regular basis😀
@@stevegleed5 I like it when my lures get a bit worn, not bothered by chips on a five quid lure. If you are buy a can of epoxy lacquer spray. A minutes work to spray all your metals up.
A great lure made even better? Looks like it.
We certainly think so! 👍
Would you use at night in the surf ?
Yes these can be used at night.
Hi - what is the best way to attach the seeker to the line, any particular swivel preferred?
Also direct to braid or fluoro?
Thanks!
I use a fluoro leader about 3 foot with a small clip. No point in swivels really, braid will twist a hundred times before the swivel turns. I haven't had any problems using seekers yet. Single hook seems best plus pulls out of snags easier
This would absolutely kill mackerel and stripers in the Gaspe
Excuse my ignorance but why use a single hook?
Less damage to the fish when you remove the hook and safer for your hands too.
hi henry witch rod do you use in this video thanks
For me it looks like Shimano Lunamis or something very close.
There deadly.
May help if you actually caught something with them..
I’m deaf and while this bloke covers his kisser I can’t make out what his rattling on about. And after all that he caught bugger all
Why are you wearing a mask?
Because he's clearly on the spectrum and as usual talking out of his backside.
@@anthonynorris4705 It's because he had skin cancer and now he takes no chances.
@@anthonynorris4705 thats a tad harsh mate
