Sharpest Railroad Curve Ever On Main Line & Dangerous Place To Railfan, CSX Enters Queensgate Yard

- Dangerous area to Railfan and sharpest curve ever on a mainline railroad line. Train knocks down the signal while entering the huge railroad yard in Cincinnati known as Queensgate Yard. First a local switching train goes by with a remote control locomotive that is used for switching customers on the west side of Cincinnati. I saw this remote control locomotive in action just before I filmed it but I couldn't find anywhere to park. This train use to have a caboose for long reverse moves but they have abandoned the caboose idea. Next train was a HUGE CSX auto racks train. It slowly approached the curve, knocked down the signal ( Yellow goes to Red ), crossed the bridge and went through the flood wall to enter the huge yard. It took about 18 minutes for this train to pass me and while it was going by you can see 2 other trains moving in the distance on the Norfolk Southern line and another CSX line. There was also a Central Railroad Of Indiana CIND train waiting to enter the yard but I left after the CSX auto racks train passed me. This area is not good for rail fanning. Some of the people who walk through here just look a little shady and they never smile. The road to get back here is listed as a city road but it has huge pot holes full of water and trash is everywhere including some old mattresses with some weird stains. When I was there filming there were 2 police cars parked just a short way down from me next to one of the flood walls. I had a friend with me but he didn't get out of the truck. I have another video that I made here a couple years ago showing the old B&O dwarf signal in use that use to sit next to the bridge on the sharp curve. Filmed December 16, 2021. Thanks for watching! Hey JawTooth, I think you'd like my newest video! I ride with BNSF, UNIONPACIFIC, NORFOLK SOUTHERN and CN all in one video in 4 minutes!
I am watching it right now. It is awesome and I love the music also!

The sounds of those auto racks bumping and clanging are so soothing to me
In the UK we would call a curve that sharp a "train-set curve", because it resembles the curves you get in train sets.
Yes it does, Doesn't it
A very merry Christmas to you and your family
Between Michael Hewitt and originator of this thread.
Reminds me a good old days when my dad used to buy me train sets for Christmas
Love Jaw’s video because he always shows the entire length of train no matter how long it is. Norfie is a cute little kitty 🐈⬛❤️
Your passion for trains is both infectious and refreshing. I enjoy watching, son! Keep up the great work!
*watch out for that curve, son!*
So that's where the trains I send to you go LOL
Hahaha, you're so silly, I guess that is why I watch your vids.
Oooh. Nice catch
What grumbly auto rack parade that was, Thank you jawtooth!
I like the view under the bridge of the gritty urban area. I lived two blocks from the Milwaukee Road downtown yard back in the 70's, and it reminds me of that. Good job JT!
Nothing better than seeing a remote control loco going into a sharp curve on that 1st train going into the yard.
For a change they filled the yard with that one -not emptied it Jawtooth !!! The tanks was a nice short number -but mannnnnnn the last was something else !! Norfie is sooo happy these days with your family -im so glad you took her on board and helped out !!
Regards
Very relaxing for Saturday afternoon! Thanks!
Every one of those Auto Racks makes a Loud Bang as it’s being Stretched, Pulled & Yanked. 👍
Good morning to all from SE Louisiana 18 Dec 21.
I love all the dense infrastructure in Cincy. Definitely an old urban gem. I'll miss the Western Hills Viaduct when it gets replaced.
I have always had this Fascination with old rustic yard main lines going out.
Expected more wheel screeching on such a tight curve. I assume the white box down track could be a flange greaser. Would explain. 3 TRAINS AT ONCE! Its all about location, location, location. You find them. Great vid!
Hope you have a good day jawtooth and the weather there looks better than it is in texas right now and I agree that is a tight curve enjoy your weekend and have a blessed week ahead
Nice job jaw tooth. My arm would be killing me.
Boy that second train was indeed loooong! After a long time - a DPU! I knew there had to be one just for the number of cars :) You are right about that area too - everything looks a bit sketchy.
Woo hoo DPU!
Good Lord, you could outwalk that 2nd train
Hey Jawtooth, I have some really good news I want to share with you and your fans. On September 17 of this year, I officially quit drinking alcohol and yesterday was 3 months of sobriety. And I couldn't be happier. Can you spread the word on an upcoming video? Everyone could use some good news these days.
Cool bro! Gotta take it one day at a time. Stopped getting high 21 years ago myself. I find Jaw Tooths videos relaxing if you can believe that 😀
You got this. I quit 20 years ago myself, cold turkey. Just opened the top one day and said no more. Poured it out and with God's help, never again.
Just hang on. The want will go away one day.
Thank you. We're Jawtooth fans, we good.
Congratulations
AWESOME job
A very merry Christmas to you and your family
I ues to work with people with drug and alcohol addictions
A very difficult time to go through
Again congratulations on your achievement
Thank you. Being drunk at the time all the time, those were some of my darkest days. I'm glad I got the can-do attitude at the right time.
Excellent signal action and multi track
Cool area...That is near the old AMSHACK station....I pulled in there in the 1970's.....Storrs yard was still active then....Nice video son......
Another good one thank you keep them coming brother
The Springfield (Ohio) Suburban RR had curves so tight that they welded two knuckles back to back to insert between cars to keep the ends from touching!
Holy cats!
I'mma have to check out "knuckle back"
This is the sharpest turn I've ever seen, even the nearby rail yards don't have turns to sharp
+Michael Schulsinger...I live in Springfield and thought I knew most of the city's railroad history.....where in town were these curves? Where did that railroad go?
Looked like Locomotive 981 had new drive axles recently installed
Good live action Son ...👏👍😎 Thx for sharing ...
Wow that 2nd one emptied the whole yard.
Thank you for these images offering a beautiful prospect of trains leaving what seems to be a sorting station in the background. As their speed is weak, we have time to observe in detail locomotives and cars.
Great spot
Nice video friend
Good video jawtooth, wow that was a long long long auto rack train
Love the dpu
I think it was trying to hide! Lol
I enjoyed the video have a great rest of your weekend
BUENAS TARDE JAW TOOHT, GRACIAS POR SUS IMAGENES Y FELIZ FIN DE SEMANA.
Loved this!! Fabulous Video 👍👏👏
They filled the yard up with that second train. Too bad that red and black engine didn't move up too. That was a sharp curve. Thanks for sharing
GREAT VIDEO AND AWESOME SHARP CURVE IN THE TRACKS. VERY COOL INDEED THANKS AGAIN
That was an awesome video. Thanks!
I see flange greasers are working on this tight curve, The CSX 831 looked to have all new wheels. I love trains always have. JT I really enjoy your videos!!
Just west of the Tehachapi Loop and downhill is an extended length of a tight curve. I had a field project nearby with an elevated view of the curve. All wheel flanges were screaming the entire time they were in the curve. Uphill with 3 units leading and variable pushers in the mix, the trains aren't speeding. Scenic mountain setting, with several tunnels visible from highway CA-58, but the loop isn't. Some memorable wrecks along this stretch, back to steamer days. My Dad had a great book on this section.
Make it seem like the steamer days were not as safe as it is today with the modern locomotives 🧐
6 horseshoe curves and a loop, 12-14 degree curves everywhere, and all of it on mountain grade, between 2.2 and 2.9%. Tehachapi is a terrible grind, home to over a dozen string line derailments a year while still being one of the busiest stretches of single-track mainline in the country.
I agree on your passion for trains! Keep up the good work son!
It's so weird seeing only two units on that thing
I don't know for sure, but, I'd be willing to bet the racks were empty.
I grew up near Morpeth, in Northumberland, England. It has the tightest curve (17 chains or 340 metres radius) of any main railway line in the United Kingdom. Several serious/fatal accidents have happened there on northbound trains. Indeed, the UK rail system now features "Morpeth Boards" which are like AWS signals but for upcoming speed restrictions (because of curves, or whatever).
Now the expression "DPU, I see You" is stuck forever in my head, lol
Love the "Sponge Bob Square Cab" GP40-3 on the first train. You got a fine looking young man holding that cat, too! Great video.
Some comments about graffiti. The culture easily costs the public untold millions of dollars. Consider that most of the paint you see has been shoplifted or stolen in other ways because this genre of "artists" are not purchasing the materials. Also consider that the railroads must reapply any official numbering and coding where the graffiti has covered them up. Consider in the case of the auto racks that paint overspray has damaged many new vehicle finishes that must be corrected when the vehicle reaches the destination.
Amen to that !!
Exactly Larry.
A point I have used to folks that think its " cool", is ask them if they would feel the same way about it if someone painted the side of their home or vehicle. Yeah, not so much. Same deal, RR cars are someone's property as well.
Sadly auto racks need those small holes to provide light for the folks who loaded and secure the cars. After a car is boogered up they're left that way because they won't paint over someone's art or cant incorporate the old drawing and that's from 2 folks @ TTX
@@paulbergen9114 yes, sadly the rail car owners know there is no point in spending money to put the car back to corporate livery because it will simply get defaced again. They have to settle for only restoring official railroad data and other coding.
@@larrywalker7759 back in the day if a car came in for shop work Wisconsin.Central would try to touch up the car. It was a guy with a roller but they tried. At present plastic pellets cars NCIX & NCUX are touched up frequently the only place I know if that takes it seriously
I saw the title Old Main Line and I got excited - we have the original Old Main Line here in Maryland. It was the beginning of the old B&O from Baltimore to Ellicott City, Maryland (about 10 miles). Since the first train ran in the 1800's it was extended to Brunswick, MD and west. It is still an active line hauling double stacks, autos, coal, ethanol to the port at Baltimore. I enjoyed seeing this (and al of your videos).
One of your best ever, Jaw Tooth. Thanks for uploading.
Awesome!!😊👍👍👍👍👍👍
Amazing videos jaw tooth keep up the good work
You sometimes say they emptied the yard but with those auto racks they filled the yard with that one.. Great video Jawtooth thanks
That was a long one for sure!
Looks like they barely clear under that bridge...especially the auto racks
Question : are the "double stacks" taller than the "auto racks" ?
@@icosthop9998 I'm not 100% sure, but I do think the double stacks are a little taller
@@2xrpm thank you I thought so too so they can't go underneath the underpass.
Something to train Masters at the yard got to look out for
Awesome! That Is A Very Sharp Curve!!
Not much height to spare under the bridges either!
That had to be the longest and slowest train you've ever recorded. I have to give you credit JT, I know very few people including me that would have recorded that entire train.
You haven't been at that location in quite a long time. That was cool.
Is it me, or are the blue Freddies brighter than the yellow ones? Great video, Jaw Tooth!
2nd train going slow mostly due to the approach signal.
Watching that local.leave I think that's the first time I've seen them yellow strobe lights on. Tight as that curve was no big screeching. That horseshoe style curve makes me think of the SP @ Colton. There must be enough grease from that flange lubricator on the outbounds to keep these long racks quiet. Good train handling with no sudden stops or acceleration lest one leave a heap 'o cars laying on their sides. As for CIND in the distance take a number and wait your turn. Appreciate the behind the scenes tour to Cincy
Nice video
Thanks for the wonderful view Jawtooth! Love watching these trains go around the curve!
ANOTHER OUTSTANDING VIDEO & EXCELLENT REPORT ON THE AREA BY "JT"
Oh, thats the tightest curve Ive ever seen, as with the longest auto train... Enjoyed it... 🙂
Jaw Tooth, today's was super. Very enjoyable and interesting overheadpassing in the back while the train on the curve moved on slowly. Thank you again for sharing.
Thank you for documenting these trains, Jaw Tooth! That was neat to see the three trains at once. That auto rack train was a HUGE. I noticed that the auto rack train was initially struggling as it came up the hill to come to that sharp curve. After a while I moticed that the auto rack train was moving faster as the engines got it moving. Those flood walls are something to see. I presume that the wall plugs that go into the flood walls where the train tracks go through the flood wall are close to the openings so that they can be put in place when they are needed. Thank you for uploading this video!
Tom, their was no struggle at all, with those “ high capacity “ engines, the operating protocol requires being able to stop within one half the range of vision plus the signal inside of the curve was out of vision ( sight) that you have to prepare to stop for and in this case the signal displayed an aspect allowing it to proceed without stopping….ms
@@mshum538 thank you for the insight on why the engineer was proceeding so slowly as he came up the hill and around the curve. I did not realize that he had to be able to stop within a specific distance from the signal if the signal would not allow him to proceed. Thank you for your knowledge and insght!
Thomas, I think the Public Works department for the City of Cincinnati has a place or places that they store those flood wall sections. I've watched them close up the wall down on Mehring Way, which is a road down below the city along the river. They bring in the pieces there on a truck and put them in place with a boom on another truck. They seem to work pretty fast when floods threaten the city. You know it's going to be a bad one when they seal off those walls, it disrupts so many things when they do put them up, but then again, the river does that when it goes to major flood stage.
You go way above and beyond to get us awesome videos. Be safe out there.
104 cars with the DPU after car 51, when you would point the camera just right you could tell it was loaded with new cars.
I wonder if that was one of them’027’ curves. lol
Such a sharp curve yet no flange squeal - strange🤔
Solar-powered flange Greaser near switches.
Great video thank you this is awesome
That was freaking cool. How rare is it getting 3 trains in the same shot and them not setting in the yard side by side.
Neat location. Gotta do this one again.
I don't know what they're doing with all those auto racks. Must be putting them in storage because there is still no trucks/cars on dealer lots around me.
Take care and safe travels.
They're all headed to Elon's place to pick up all those new Tesla's they just released LOL
The Empties are heading to the Honda plant in Greensburg.
Yes it's sharp! good morning to ALL,

WOW ! 😮 that is a very long auto rack train going through the entrance of Queen gates yard I like it 👍👍👍
Jawtooth,
Have ever considered giving tours with rail fans? There is a guy who does it with baseball games and charges $1,000 per game. It would be great for those of us rail fans who don’t know the area or that much about real life trains. AKA how many times do have to explain what a DPU is? LOL!
You could call your tours “A day with Jawtooth.”
Could be an interesting side hustle... Or would that be "hassle?"
Jawtooth,
We all share the same love and passion for what you do. Keep it up in whatever way makes you happy!
Merry Christmas to you, your family and all of your fans!
Somebody got their money’s worth from the one lead locomotive and the DPU. That’s s long long long train!!
Man more content! Thank you JT. Great work son, I appreciate the work you do for me to watch from slc utah. Awesome job
Awesome video 🚄🚄👍
You should ask railroad companies to do ride alongs to film their actual operations. That would be super!
That's one long train
That was really fantastic, Jaw Tooth! Never thought that a major transcontinental railroad would have such tight curves! There seem to be quite a few of them leading up to the entrance on that side of the yard. I hope it's not too difficult to get some more videos in that location, if it's not too dangerous. Really appreciate this.
there is one in New York on a video from a while back that is tighter then this that leads into an industry. Only 4 axel GP's are allowed to do the switching of it, since it also goes into the building itself. I forget who posted it but its a crazy tight curve.
Thanks for mentioning the flood wall. Says it was built in 1948. Local stuff in other places is always interesting and usually worth learning.
Great good video, mr Jaw Tooth.
That CSX train with boxcars for automobiles that was a long one. I guess two trains in one therefor a DPU. But man what a busy railyard overthere tree trains into the yard and one waiting.
Greet from Zandvoort the Netherlands.
Not "boxcars", "Auto-Racks". A boxcar can/will carry anything fit to put into it, where "only" vehicles are carried in the long train cars. Note the auto-racks only have end doors, on both ends so the vehicles can be driven from one end of the cut of cars being loaded/unloaded to the other end.
Perhaps this video will help you fully understand the unloading. ruclips.net/video/EKk4MTJ2koE/видео.html
And this one, the "loading". Enjoy the "drive". ruclips.net/video/oqc6GSMhljo/видео.html
Outstanding video young man! Thanks for sharing!
And I just realized what you meant by "knocking down a signal." I was looking in previous videos for a train to physically hit and knock down a signal haha.
Me too and I still do not understand it.
Haha, took me a little while to catch on to that one also.
@@jenbell9823 train knocks the signal down from green to Red indicating that it is now in that section.
@@danielulz1640 True, but in "this" case the signal starting out was Amber, over red, over red, and got knocked down to Red, over Red, over Red. We do not know why the signal was Amber to start...
Here we DPU ALRIGHT
thanks for all you do
Really a sharp curve. Never knew flood walls there. Chessie gets along with all the pets
I see they replaced the old B&O signal at that curve. Sad.
The January issue of TRAINS on pages 22 thru 29 lists locos, railroads, and places you should see in 2022 before they are gone. Item #3, B&O color position light signals in Northwest Ohio. The past is being left behind...
WOW! Great video Jaw Tooth. The long train on the tight curve was awesome!!!!
Good
Very cool video! Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, in that area of Cincy, you better have eyes in the back of your head and a CCW license because you just might need it!
Back in the 90s, we took our two kids to visit the oldest daughter's friend whose family mover to Ohio. We spent the afternoon on the ore ship that is open for tours and was told as we were leaving, by a crew member, to get out of this area of town well before dark.
That auto rack train was a monster!! That is something how sharp that curve is heading into the yard. I wonder how the sections of the flood wall seals up tight enough to keep out the water with the rails at the bottom. Would like to see how they fit. I am surprised you can gain access to the area you parked your truck. This was a cool place you went to to shoot some train action. Norfie sure is getting big. I am surprised she doesn't scratch your son all up the way he holds her. She really is great natured to allow him to hold her in that way, especially now that she is getting bigger. It's a good thing she will be getting fixed soon. The dogs sure do know how to laze around in comfort. They are great natured dogs to be so good with the cat as they are.
I see the highway above. Is that another RR track above?? Well I can tell you this is going to be another one of my favorites.♥️ This is 😎👍🏼. 🎄 🎀🐾
