- Viruses are strange creatures. Bordering between life and non life, depending on who you ask, you'll get completely separate answers on what these things are. With that said however, they have a tendency to want to attack cells and change life to a way that benefits them, and not so much anything it infects. on the moon Calisto, there appears that ancient life at one point, evolved there. However, once the moons oceans were infected with a mystery biophage, things took a turn towards rapid evolution. In todays episode, we will discuss how that happened and ultimately, how it took place!

Turning into liquid Roanoke
The ultimate storyline 🤣
Hey Roanoke what about if the person’s immune system is to strong and naturally handles viruses very easily and quickly to the point where something like coronavirus is overcome with in a time period of one week and after that the virus is completely gone and the body is not damaged in any way!?.
@@alexandarcecil8212 According to this, if they got this virus and fought it off completely, they would have permanent physical and mental disabilities, would still be sufficiently human though if not a little bit cancerous.
And or disadvantageous mutations without the virus to turn them into advantageous.
That'll supercharge your winnebago!

Been waiting for this one. The game tells what the parasite does pretty well, but Roanoke just explains it in a much more entertaining way. Happy new year EVERYONE!!!
I don't like the game explanation, honestly, at least the part with the giant Kaiju and its Larvae. It seems totally out of place to include it at all and not address later.
@@logangrimnar3800 I think the kaiju is a setup for another game, in my opinion I believe the kaiju was something made to superseed planets with life, by an alien civilization.
@@B_4035mn It didn't feel like a setup, it wasn't presented as one. The characters showed no reaction to it and the existence of life in the solar system is never mentioned which is why the non reaction is so weird.
@@logangrimnar3800 I haven't heard any of the dialogue pertaining to the sea creature as I haven't played the game myself, but is it possible that humans are already aware of life below the ice? It would make more sense as to why nobody's particularly concerned about finding life in the solar system, at the very least.
@@B_4035mn Are you, by any chance, related to anyone named Ethan?
Dude, you just blew my mind with the question “Why do viruses have an innate desire to propagate?” I’ve honestly never considered that. How do scientists sleep at night with this kind of existential inquiry rattling around in their heads?
The answer is they do not, it's just that we only encounter the ones that do because because the ones that did not have no decendants. It's like the question about why the universe is so finely tuned for human intelligence, it's because if it wasn't, there'd be no one to notice.
@@logangrimnar3800 that’s groovy! 😄😄😄
@@logangrimnar3800 That's an excellent explanation, and I don't think I could have said it better myself. One thing we always forget in the process of evolution is the side that was unfit to continue surviving.
@@logangrimnar3800 You didn't really answer the question though I feel like.
"Why do viruses have the innate desire to propogate?"
A: "The answer is they do not, it's just that we only encounter the ones that do because because the ones that did not have no descendants"
That doesn't answer why these viruses have that innate actuality within them. That explains why we only see ones that want to propagate, and not other sorts, but it doesn't answer why there is a "sort" that propagates at all. And by what mechanism these things necessarily have that quality "to propagate"
@@Greenfeld13 According to some studies, living systems increase the entropy of their environment faster than it would happen without them. Beacuse of that, on the long term, the existence of life is actually energetically favorable. As for the mechanism, you gotta look into RNA/DNA-polymerization and viral lifecycles.
Talking about modifying humans to quickly adapt reminds me of the movie Pandorum. Pretty similar concept. The people were meant to adapt to their new planet, but they adapted to the darkness and submerged ship instead, becoming monster-like.
I always love the concept of a virus mutating a body to its own benefit because on a certain level some do. My favorite instance of it was the Mercer Virus aka the Blacklight Virus. Named Mercer because of Patient Zero, Dr. Alex Mercer. The Virus absorbs and converts bio material, the end result is often something like a walking barely sentient tumor, geared towards violence. However occasionally it can encounter someone with the proper genetic makeup that a different reaction happens. The Virus consumes the body and gains the memories and knowledge of its victims essentially being a genetic copy of the victim to the point it could easily fool itself into believing it IS the victim. This self awareness in turn means it holds absolute control over its body and its viral capabilities, it consumes the bodies of others, gaining their memories and knowledge as well, is able to control its own spread consciously and is extremely hard to kill to the point of being virtually impossible as the nature of it means as long as a single virus cell survives and attaches to another living creature it will keep surviving. It was designed as a sort of Super Soldier bio weapon but because of its tendency to eat away at bodies and turn them into bio engineered monstrosities, it never made it far because having a super solider is pointless if the soldier is for all intents and purposes dead and runs the chance of being a Viral God.
@@Broomer52 Hell yeah I love Prototype..
There has been a lot of power comparisons with Mercer and other superhuman and armored suit heroes that end with Mercer losing, not taking into account how Alex Mercer or the High Evolved would drag out fights and assimilate into seemingly harmless civilians.
The Mercer Virus vs. supervillains or armored suit villains would end more interestingly or end up one-sided.
@@LunarEdge7 Mercer is functionally immortal. He practically took a nuke to the face and all he needed was a crow to get back on his feet. People seem to forget he’s not human, he’s not even a person. He’s a collection of Virus Strings puppeteering meat in the shape of a person. The only reason he got killed by Heller is because Heller ate the meat Mercer was inhabiting and is trapped in him. Theirs not much he’d lose to.

Something I think could be cool for Roanoke to theorize about is actually the opposite of all these fictional super viruses: characters that have pretty much complete immunity to all disease.
For instance, in the comics Hulk's immune system is so strong he had zero fear in handling a bleeding person who was known to have AIDS. And while I'm sure unraveling the biological implications of Hulk, Wolverine, Deadpool, etc's healing factors and immune systems is probably a whole can of worms, I guess my main curiosity after all this explanation of how viruses invade cells is how a cell could theoretically be super charged to be 100% impervious to ALL invaders or how an immune system could have such an iron grip over what material comes in and is allowed to persist.
The hulks biology is super interesting, I remember reading a comic panel where Tony stark figured out that the hulks body is constantly adapting but ONLY when bruce becomes the hulk
Also Spider Man. Healing factor BUT no particular viral protection. (For comparison.) Also Speedfreek huh? That was the Professor wasn't it?
I gather he's gone up a few notches since then.
@@Sicdirewolf they've also done the bit where he's so radioactive that his body would kill any pathogens lol
@@jon7941 I assume you're referring to when Speedfreak gutted Hulk? Yeah while that still sucks for Hulk he's gone through a LOT worse in recent comics. Immortal Hulk by Ewing really ramped up the body horror and brutality that Hulk must recover from.
@@getschwifty5537 I was referring to him flat out stating he was immune to AIDS. Did he get gutted in that one?
An interesting point that a lack of exposure to disease and infections can weaken the immune system.
I actually had a talk with my father about this, that the more parents try to "protect" their children from getting sick, the more they put them at risk in the long run. Things like using hand sanitizer whenever your kid goes outside rather than just washing their hands with soap could prevent them from developing a natural immunity to the stuff in the ground and air outside.
Oh. Oh no. I better use regular soap more
That's why I feed rotten carcasses to my children.
Why can't the child welfare protection agency understand that?
@@etienne8110 makes sense
imo that's why everyone started getting the flu and common colds so quickly and so hard after the c0vid lockdowns. since we were diligent in sanitising and masking up to prevent the panny from getting worse, we also reduced our exposure and therefore resistance to seasonal illnesses that are usually no sweat to the average person. like, i got the flu this year and usually it sucks but it's not that bad, but because i haven't had it in SO long i ended up with fucking pneumonia and started coughing up blood for about two weeks with a sky-high temperature. it was horrendous. anyway i agree with you. dangerous or complex illnesses we don't fully understand yet - like the rona - should absolutely be avoided. but tummy bugs, colds, and sore throats? bring them on, we need them and kids DEFINITELY need them.

@@isaaczavala5238 I'm honestly a fan of the game and would defend it given the chance, but to avoid a rant I'll just give you what you want and stick with the two complaints I see most often.
1) Poor pacing; there's several parts where it's all action followed by a massive build-up, followed by talking, followed by build-up, followed by action, rinse and repeat.
2) A lot are turned off by the prioritization of melee combat over gun combat which as you'd expect you do have a ton of ammo by the endgame but until about halfway through the game you'll be swinging through most encounters.
There are some other more minor issues but those are the two I get seeing brought up constantly even now. There were also some frame dipping issues at release but they were pretty quick to patch that so if you see that as a major complaint at least know that isn't a problem we're really seeing anymore even though Steam reviews love to keep day one reviews up top for stupid reasons giving an inaccurate view of the current game.
Like I said I'm genuinely into this game and am trying my damndest not to go off on a tangent in defense of it but those are the two biggies I see thrown at it a lot.

What's interesting/strange about all these "forced evolution"-type infections (Calisto, Dead Space, Killing floor, RE, etc) is how they turn the species to look more "monstorous"
Suppose you look at things like convergent evolution. In that case, it points to the idea that there is an optimal form for a specific environment - it'd be interesting to see a "monster" force-evolved in a way that actually makes sense compared to its environment.
Obviously this is done for gameplay spooky reasons and body horror, but still
i.e. the slicy-choppy shoulder bits on a necromorph are sure good for slicy-choppy business but would they be energy efficient in the long run?

So Captain Ferris might have had some kind of immunodeficiency issue, too, given how he just turned into a bigger and nastier version of himself for most of the game and the warden called him a new subject zero. That last change into a giant inhuman thing seemed like it might have been a response to the ballistic and blunt/shock trauma Jacob was inflicting, rather than something that would have happened if Ferris wasn't beaten up then.

Did anyone see jacksepticeyes view on it kind of pissed me off not going to lie
I feel like we are alone with how much people are just relentlessly shitting on it. Like, it's not the greatest game of all time, but it's a pretty damn good one that scared me quite a bit. You'd think it was so bad by the reception that there was nothing even remotely positive, but once I finished it I enjoyed it overall and, though sometimes frustrating, the issues it had in combat didn't completely hinder the experience. (Ironic that many horror games get a pass for that because 'it's scary and supposed to be uncomfortable" yet for some reason doesn't apply here.)
Incredible to me that the reception to Dead Space 3 was more positive than Callisto Protocol. Like what the actual fuck
@@DisDatK9 it's because everyone wanted it to be dead space and for some reason people had a crazy idea that at some point the devs said it will be the spiritual successor to dead space even jacksepticeye said these and people ran with that even tho these was never said once in the end its just morons that probably killed another great game because of stupid comments and lack of knowledge

Fantastic video it's a shame the game itself wasn't as well designed as this virus. Also take a look into the creature's in the witcher franchise there's some really good stuff there.
I was waiting for Roan video on this, good stuff
The thing that always stumbles into my thoughts when considering the relative sizes of bacteria, viruses, the cosmos, atoms, subatomic particles, and humans is the fact that, somehow, human beings are actually almost exactly in the middle of the pack. It probably means nothing at all, but it just seems to dominate my thoughts for a while. It seems bizarre and unrealistic but that's only because we are really unable to comprehend a scale that vast. Even considering that the tiniest nearly-living things we can actually see are gigantic when compared to something like he size of the nucleus of an atom, it just feels like there's some type of significance to being directly in the middle of the scale. If you go from the scale of a Planck length all the way out to the size of the observable universe, it seems strange that we should be in the middle of those measurements.
The other thing that always arises invariably from the "evolution" train of thought is the way most people attribute intent to the physical changes that occur between modified changes to genetic expression. It's not like an animal or species of flora can determine how to change itself to better fit the environment (aside from adjusting behavior, at least.) Consider flightless birds for a moment. There wasn't a day where some random bird decided to dedicate less energy to flying so it could run better. It's that there were some birds that were hatched/born less capable of flight but we're able to survive through different behaviors regardless of being less capable of flight. There were enough survivors with this slight difference/deficiency in flight ability that this attribute didn't make the animals die before being able to reproduce. They were able to find/use/exploit enough resources without flight that they secured a small niche in the food web. After several generations, there was no thinning of the flightless bird population so they just continued on living that way.
Usually people will talk about epigenetics to the point where they basically assume that animals can consciously change their own physiology/phenotypic expression to better adjust to an environment. That is ALWAYS the train of thought that would-be "debunkers" try to use in their argument. They even go so far as to say "if humans came from monkeys then why are there still monkeys?" When I hear someone say that shit, I immediately know that they were just failed completely by the educational system(s). But, what they don't realize, is that they would actually have a valid argument if they were discussing the genetic component of virology. Regardless of that, the thing that doesn't make sense to me is the way people will consciously choose to debate/argue a point of contention (such as evolution by natural selection) from a position of ignorance or uneducated assertion. It's like they hear 3 sentences on a topic and there's no other available information. They also seem to believe, for some reason, that "science" is determined by some type of greater consensus regardless of future information possibly leading to a much different conclusion through trial, error, and iterations. That's also a huge reason why I love this channel. It's taken from a very reasonable angle where there are no solid conclusions and where additional information can actually modify each hypothesis such that a better conclusion can be reached without stating everything as inarguable fact.
Holy god my brains to slow to understand all tht😭
You have to come to the realization that humans fundamentally change with levels of intelligence. I have around a 140~IQ and the craziest concept for my trauma ridden brain to grasp as I was growing out of my adolescence, is just how stupid people truly are. I thought being smart pertained to how much you know, but it's so much more. Your ability to perceive, process, and extrapolate concepts. Your reflexes, your intuition, your situational awareness. Your ability to manage stress, and strategize, and formulate solutions. Everything comes down to how powerful your brain is. There are a few perks to being on the lower end of the bell curve, but not many. Most people are drones, bots as we call them. Theres no point in even trying. It's like you aren't even talking to a fellow human at times, it's like they're an NPC, and were programmed to live and think the way they do. Its terrifying once you really get into it all. It all serves a grand purpose in our survival as a species, you need the big brains to run everything, and the drones to do all the work. That's why for the majority of human history, leadership has been hereditary. This is still true, as the people who truly hold power in any society are the ones with money. They prepare their offspring in every way they can to fill their role, pass down generations of built on experience and knowledge, and eventually their wealth. The problem is there's a disproportionate amount of intellects that occupy drone positions in society, and to many drones in position of power. This is the basis of the impending revolution. Moral of story, people are stupid man.
Thank you have been waiting for this one. Happy New Year!
Funny enough, I've come to realize my immune system suffered during last two years. I lost my job (which was a whiles away from where I lived) back in 2020, right at the start of the year (A week after my birthday. Interesting theory about Ferris and Patient Zero retaining their humanity due to immuno-compromisation, but I do think there's still a neurological/psychological effect on the host from the pathogen, especially once the mutations start kicking in, which I can only imagine causes a lot of pain and agony in the host. Granted, Ferris may have always been a psychopath from the way he spoke and talked, I don't think the stress from witnessing the outbreak and eventually being infected really helped his mental fortitude at all, and as he continued to lose more of his sanity, he became more violent. I assume that Subject Zero also went through a similar phase when he was infected, which may be why the other researchers may have felt the need to put him down.
I'd also assume Dani Nakamura isn't going to have an easy time with her eventual "change" as well. It's a pretty bleak ending for everyone in the Callisto Protocol, everyone except the Warden of course. The rich and powerful will always win.

I cannot wait for Roanoke 2 conspiracy theory boogaloo. Shoot dude I would love to hear your thoughts on conspiracy theories in general. As in diving into different conspiracy theories. Keep up the good work
This video was so detailed. And I learned a lot. You definitely earned my sub.
I could listen to you talk about viruses for hours.
Ill definitely be watching for Roanoke 2 Viral Boogaloo💀💀
I've been waitinnnnn for this oneeee ❤️❤️❤️
Finally!! I’ve been waiting for this video 😊
I like to think of white blood cells as sentient noble warriors fighting off the invading zombie viruses to defend the homeland.....
I was waiting for you to make this! Yay!
Enjoy!
There are YouTubing virologists so you could go back and start a channel where u teach because you're so good at simplifying it. I was on my way to finishing in Microbiology and was going to go into Virology but I had a son and that kinda got dashed but I'm thinking of going back myself.
Roanoke is the only person to really figure out the true story here. The inmates were all super violent because they went bald.
New Thumbnail looks sick👌
I fricking need a video of you just playing spore while explaining how, why and when would your creature adapt and all.
The Old Ones from "AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS" created viruses as helpful tools.
Boogaloo 😂gets me every time.
literally binge watching your videos rn
I admit despite how much of a mess Callisto Protocol is, the biophage and monsters are the best part of the game and roanoke explaining itself functionality and origins was fun to listen to.
Maybe the next one could discuss the final boss and what it takes to retain sentience from being infected with the pathogen.
I don't even care that this video was so rambling, I'd listen to a 3 hour video of Roanoke rambling on about microbiology.
Thank you for another intelligent video, such seem few and far between. Love your channel and take care.
Dude 7000 views in 40 minutes? Your killing it!
I just imagine that channel 2.0 will be live streams of his own viral creations. Explaining them on specimen and with the immortal words “let’s start with the feet” 😂
19:00 I knew I recognized that music as “under cover of night” from halo 1. Could never miss it.
Wooot!:D Happy to see you covering the biophage. Also the Callisto Protocol takes place on Callisto, the Europa Outbreak was caused by samples of the biophage being introduced into medical supplies being sent from Black Iron to Europa. Which caused the incident.
(Only saying this because you said Black Iron was on Europa in the video) Anyways I hope you have a happy New Year Roanoke and may it be fantastic for you!:D
HECK YEAH I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
I noticed the little jab with at the "Keeps" commercial. Nice!
U have answered my call sir!!! I shall smash the like button like none other!!!
