This is absolutely great advice. The reason why it's overlooked is because honing fundamentals takes TIME and EFFORT (months to years). People getting into art might find it boring to learn basic shapes and forms but it's one of the prerequisites to drawing anything you want. Master the fundamentals and the rest will be easier.

    • @jaybeebartolome8386

To be honest, this actually simplifies drawing. Its easy to check for errors this way.

Any resources you'd recommend for that? I definitely feel like shapes is where I'm getting stuck at the moment, ESPECIALLY circles which I can't do with any consistency.

@@RSATT01 Robert Laszlo Kiss Industrial sketching fundamentals / Drawabox course / 6 principles of structures and intro to drawing by proko / or look up shapes and form exercises here on youtube. Keep in mind drawing shapes and forms require repetition and a base understanding of perspective so don't get discouraged if you don't get it at first! Line confidence is also the key to make better looking shapes. It took me two years to be very comfortable at it, but in the end the result is worth it to make your drawings believable and grounded.

but what about going back to the fundamentals??? how is someone supposed to know when they're done learning the fundamentals if they already can't do anatomy well? I can try and construct a body from shapes all I want but it will never look like a body, so I just go back to shapes.

I was about to start the rigorous journey of studying anatomy because I figured that was what I needed for humans, even though i draw non mammalian animals quite well. This is something I've already been doing with other animals and just didn't realize it. This gives me a good idea of what to dig into! Thanks!

Yes, it's good to know fundamentals, but I like humand for how they change shape, it's fascinating how with every breath and every move those shapes change. i'm glad to finally find someone with the same opinion on this as me! well.... animators all do tend to agree also but it's never quite fully put into words.

Really insightful video! Definitely a mistake that I also made, starting by studying anatomy by trying to memorize all the bones and muscles but not really studying gesture as a whole... I'm practicing that a lot more now. One thing I noticed from your video and wanted to ask about is: Where do you get those heavier bodies reference pictures from? I've noticed with many reference packs that the models tend to be on the slim/athletic body type, and I would like to introduce more diversity in the bodies I draw. I would appreciate some advice with that 😊

    • @AnimeCharlie

      Absolutely!
So all references I use are from Pinterest. So most times I just search for "male/female pose references "in the Pinterest search bar.
But if I'm looking for a particular body type. I'll say "plus size male/female full body reference"
      Hope that helps!

This is such a good way to explain this. I was privileged to go to an art school several years ago (I say privileged, but I still owe money for that education, and it was two decades ago) and my non-artist roommate used to ask about nude models and if that was awkward. The thing is, you don't even see it as a body at a certain point. Just a collection of planes, shapes, silhouette and rhythm, the same way you'd look at a landscape.

You’re the first art channel I’ve found that really clicks with me, and I mean REALLY clicks. Any time I watch a vid and I’m having a hard time with my art (like rn) you always seem to have the answer. I also love your style, and it’s kinda similar to mine, which really helps out a ton too lol
Out of curiosity, will you ever make a discord community in the future? Cuz if so I’d love to join it

Hello! I've been lurking for a while, so I thought I'd say hi and thanks for the tutorials! I started drawing in the late 90s early 00s copying from Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh, but unfortunately I never grokked the fundamentals and it shows. :/

I'm glad that you've been lurking lol! Feel free to take your shoes off, sit down, and stay awhile though! 😉
And It's definitely never too late to learn the fundamentals!
