- Cam the Fish Guy shows us one of his interests, breeding Banggai Cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni)!
Cam shows us a great way to go about getting a mating pair and what to expect when trying to breed and how to go about raising these adorable little fish fry once you are successful!
These amazing little fish are surprisingly easy to breed in the home reef aquarium, have you given it a shot?

I've been keeping this species since 2004 and there wasn't much breeding information out there, let alone their breeding habits. Only a handful of people ever witnessed it in the Wild. Let alone in captivity How far this industry has come in 20 years is amazing. This species of fish was the sole reason I got into the hobby!
I love Pterapogon kauderni , one of my favorite saltwater fish .
Me too😊 Cam
So great to see such life happening in an LFS. Speaks volumes to the quality of care and specialist knowledge for the animals.
Thanks Josh. The live baby brine helps heaps too! Cam
Thanks for shouting out our book!!!
You’re welcome, it’s a great book. Cam
Your channel definitely deserves more subs, so many great videos and the quality of content is improving, love your work!
Thanks Brian, we appreciate the support! Cam
This video is so amazing! I’ve never seen this before. 😊
I remember the first time I saw baby Bangai cardinals and I’ve loved breeding them every time since. Cam
This was an awesome guide and I’ll definitely be trying to breed these in the future.
I recommend giving it a go😊 Cam
@@GalleryAquaticaTV I’ve actually had a spawning event a bit over a yeah ago and wasn’t prepared for it. Lost the male since unfortunately. Eventually I’ll get another pair :)
Great video. Thank you. Hopefully inspiration for others to try.
I found the fry transition to lobster eggs a bit easier than copepods. Growth rates are great on lobby eggs.
Thanks! We’ll definitely give that a go!
Loved this! Honestly this video may have been the little nudge I need to go snag a group! Always wanted to try my hand at some, just never have kept any!
Starting with a group is definitely the way to do it. Cam
@@GalleryAquaticaTV appreicate you Cam thanks for all the years of teaching and inspiration! Main reason I have my own channel!
Love those fish!
Me too😊
I've tried to get them to pair off. But all that happens with me is they fight and I end up with one big one
That is pretty common. We have big singles in 2 tanks at the Wynnum store. Cam
Спасибо 👍👍👍
Would you recommend two banggai vs just having one. Planning to get one next week. Thanks!
The best bet is to start with a group and let a pair form naturally. If you try to pick a pair you might be lucky and them be compatible, but there’s a high chance they won’t get along and you’ll end up with one. Cam
Awesoe vid. Have you ever tried finding fry, which survived on their own, in your tanks? :)
I’ve had pairs release the fry into the tank. I’ve definitely had some of those grow to full size but it’s normally just a few out of the batch. Cam
Great video! I have bred and raised banggais and identify the males and females based on the vents they have towards their anal fin - males have 2 vents and females have just one 👍🏻 has always worked for me
Great advice, I have vent sexed other fish so I should use this technique on cardinals too. Cam
@@GalleryAquaticaTV give it a go mate! It’s been an accurate way for me to sex my pairs - the fish does need to be mature to see the vents though
Luckily for me the 6 I bought 9/10 months ago where kept for 2 weeks at my LFS since he always has a quarantine for new arrivals and they got along. Well at month 8ish found one beat to hell and dead. I figured another possible male although it was the smallest of the group and already had 2 that where hanging out constantly and getting territorial. Well a few days later the suspect male also being the biggest of the now 5 had a mouth full of eggs! That Jaw can really extend! Also this fish was opening its jaw a lot months prior to this maybe stretching it out? Well 3 days went by and he ate them. Almost a month went by and it happened again now he has had them almost 2 weeks but he must be eating some of them since his jaw is not as big as day one but he still has some seeing he will not eat at all and the Female is very protective of him with the other ladies and their territory! So they say third times a charm with guys well see!
Will a snowflake eel target these guys?
Almost certainly. Cam
I have a Bangaii pair now that I am 90% confident are male and female. At about what age/size do they begin breeding?
I’d guess 18 months to 2 years. They often have one or 2 unsuccessful mouthfuls first. Cam
Pozdrawiam mój ulubiony kanał akwarystyki morskiej 😀🇵🇱
Dziekujemy bardzo! Może kiedyś wybierzemy się odwiedzić Polskę! Byłoby ciekawe zobaczyć akwaria tam! W którym mieście żyjesz?
@@GalleryAquaticaTV Witajcie :) Serdecznie zapraszam, niesamowicie miło byłoby mi was gościć :) mieszkam wraz z rodziną w Bełchatowie w centralnej Polsce. Na imię mam Paweł i kanał obserwuję już kilka lat. Pozdrawiam serdecznie.
You can also feed fry with "Azoo Plus Ultra Fresh NEWBORN FISH micron shrimp patties" 👍
Thanks for the tip! We don’t have that product available here in Australia but will definitely keep our eyes on the look out for it!
@@GalleryAquaticaTV Yes, those foods are cheap, unique and high quality! 😎👍
In your experience, was it easier to train them into pellet food after because you started out feeding them this?
@@jodanlalala This food is identical to newborn brine shrimp, and as it gradually descends into the water it moves the same way. So the fry is attractive to the food. This food is designed to feed all kinds of fry, so you really don't need to train your fish to eat anything different from what they like to eat.
@@jodanlalala Sorry, in my first answer I misunderstood your question. Yes, the adult fish begin to get used to eating this same food and pellets 😎👍
I've got mine eating pellets
That's great that you've got them into eating pellets! Even captive bred ones I've raised would only eat live food. Even when adults. I can get some of them to eat frozen krill and freeze dried. Soaked in a solution. Of benereef, bulk reef supply (reef chilly) and I've had good luck with frozen mysis for the smaller ones. There's just some that just plain won't eat prepared foods.
Mine eat a varied diet , pellets, flake, frozen, and live .
Well done😊
