Another masterpiece episode. This is an anatomy of a human being--no sugar, just straight black coffee. This show went past and deeper than a "adventure" war show. Drama and pathos at its very best....which is why I watched the show as a boy--I connected to its soul...

I used to watch this show in S Korea as a kid while my father was there working for the US army in Late 60s early 70s. It was on Korean TV and all spoke Korean bc it was dubbed. The incredible thing is that they did such a good job dubbing that every word matched the lips and even the voices; especially that of Saunders and little John was just like their English voices. I found this out in the 80s and 90s when they used to have Combat marathons once a year. Anyways it’s a great show!

If the Germans post-D-Day had made as many effective "counter-attacks" as depicted in COMBAT, then the War in Europe would still be undecided. The history is this - after the break-through in Normandy in July'44, the Krauts were in retreat in every sector of the 'front' in France, almost till they had reached the Western border of Germany.

36 PH's to Sgt Saunders... Must of been more than a hundred for the regular squads gang and Lt' Hanley at least!! The only mention of anyone having stripes removed was historically with Kirby in series one when he portrayed being a more irritating character. (remember him getting the daylights belted out of him by locals in a French bar and then left in an alleyway needing hospitalisation ?) By series 3 his character was more revered in the scripts..

@@petercermak4095 Including the purple heart he received before the series even began, Saunders would have had 49 purple hearts. But most action shows had heroes wounded or injured many times. The episodes were more "what if" this happened rather than a sequential time line. After all, the series ran longer than the war itself. The entire series was only about them in France for maybe 6 or 7 months

He deserted once. Replacement for the 28th division after their famous parade march through Paris but before they were chewed up in the costly and Battle of Hürtgen Forest (19 September to 16 December 1944). He was given multiple offers to tear up an incriminating confession of desertion and rejoin the Division. Expecting a discharge and Jail, he, as an ex-con refused these offers.

ccsra5 - I think we have a whole female fan club, and I’d guess the majority of us are watching it for the same “eye candy”.
However, I don’t think it would be a good idea if we all got together as there’d bound to be a cat fight between someone. LOL

My nominee for the BEST Combat SCRIPT; complex fascinating and beautifully crafted. Sort of a "Road" picture once Vic and Rip start their journey through the forest. The shot of both of them ascending the hill when they arrive at the camp at dawn is almost liturgical in its effect; it's "Salvation". But the story is far from over. The final exchange-- Rip having rejoined the fight while Saunders is being taken OUT of conflict-- is great. Who knows if Saunders' R&R period will have the same effect on him as did Rip's out-of-action recuperation? Very probing, insightful, understated writing. Just great, especially for a weekly,hour-long action show. LR

Somebody has to round out the squad by not following orders without question. Somebody has to be concerned with their life more than the mission. Kirby isn't a coward he's concerned about all of their lives. Jack Hogan is a great actor but doesn't get much recognition here on RUclips. He's one of the brave actors who doesn't play the hero. He plays Kirby damn well. The heroes aren't just the guys who didn't make it home. Heroes are the guys who were scared shit and went out there anyway. Hogan and Torn play different kinds of soldiers who are more alike than they realize. I think Kirby has a lot more to go home to than Avery or Saunders. and he's not gonna throw it away

LOL, by the end of all 5 seasons he ought to be a mass of rolling plasma, with all his body parts falling off.
Can’t count how many times he’s been hit in the feet, legs, arms, hands, shoulders, chest, back, head, lost his eye sight in one episode and his hearing once in another.
Miraculously he is never wounded enough to be sent home or out of action for very long.
And like some men, never whines about it.
What a HE MAN, gotta love him.
