Riding on temporary track used during line construction

  • Here we take a short ride on the battery powered track speeder, pulling a hopper car used to move dirt. I wanted to show the temporary track that is put down in order to facilitate roadbed construction. Most normal operations would just used a loader or bobcat to move dirt that is needed to build a roadbed upon. Because the RRVT is located in a dense forest, bringing such equipment in to do this job is not usually an option. To build new track, we utilize prefabricated track panels that are roughly 15 feet long and have only a few ties on them to keep the weight low. These temporary panels are hauled in by hand, and then placed on top of brick or wooden supports to get the proper height desired for the roadbed. After the track has been placed on its temporary support, a hopper car loaded with dirt is run across the track and dumped. Because there are few ties, the dirt flows under the track panel to fill in the empty space. After the dirt is up to the bottom of the rail for the length of the panel, the track panel is removed and new ties are placed upon the dirt and the permanent track is built upon then and secured. After the new track is in place, gravel is then dumped and the track tamped up to its final height. In this video you will see that the dirt has been filled to a satisfactory level and the next step will be to remove this rail and place ties on the soil. At one point you will see this new line passing over the existing line, the existing line seen has since been removed and this section is now filled in as well. You also get to ride across the temporary bridge, which is a bit janky but held many passes of the loaded hopper car that is required to build this new line. Soil was obtained from portions of the line that operate through cuts, I was able to widen the cuts to generate soil. This has 2 advantages- first, it allows a wider area on either side of the track so that ties can be pulled straight out in time of replacement, and second it provides better drainage as the ends of the ties are not covered with soil all of the time. Most parts of this line required the new track to be raised about 1-2 feet above the natural ground level, so a lot of dirt was needed to accomplish this. Enjoy!

I discovered the RRVT a few years ago thanks to RUclips, I follow with the greatest interest the resurrection of this wonderful little network. As I live in France, I'm afraid I will never visit it, but your videos are great. I hope you'll get time to put online the new tracks plan that you're building. Thanks again to let us travel on RRVT through your videos !

Thank you, I will continue to update as time allows. I was actually in France in March 2020, loved it there and this line would fit well in your countryside :) Cheers!

The only funding is from my day job 😂 Too much liability to open it to the public unfortunately. The overhead is 250VAC.

I love how this looks so rickety and insubstantial, and yet works well. Has a fairytale quality about it.

Thank you for posting, it's great to see the track work "in progress". Every bit as interesting as seeing the equipment in regular service- possibly more interesting!
