You'll get a better warning with the latest version. But this means you are using SketchUp < 2018 and the image tools don't work for you.

Easiest is to simply create black and white images and then blur them a bit, e.g. in Photoshop. But you can also use color images, e.g. from a web search.

They only work in the installed version of SketchUp Pro, not online. But just go to the Extension Warehouse window to get started.

Yes, although it will work also with groups. Components give you better control over the origin, though.
