honestly to a certain extent it doesn`t matter the style of music but also in another extent it does matter. when i use to go to youth events descovering gospel artist and so called christian bands i went to prayer and allot of prayer and asking questions from mentors and so on and what God showed me is that even though he is glorified in many different types of styles of music like country and folk and earth and egyptian and african and and contemporary music and pop music and bluegrass music and nu grass music yet their are other styles that i would totally agree that has nothing to do with God that is metal screamo nu metal rapcore and rap metal and hip hop and rap music like that i don`t see God in it although i do like all kinds of styles of music yet if God is not glorified then it don`t belong in the church. for those who disagree then here`s somethin you know their are churches out their that believe that all kinds of instruments like piano guitars drums and so on are not of God. and some churches believe that the only songs that glorify God is the book of psalms. and that hymns are not of God. their are churches who think like this. also hymns have been written in country music bluegrass and contemporary and african and jewish and mid east music and european music and list goes on. i can give you names of gospel artist that are anointed of God and who is not yet what i will do is quote scripture John 7:24 KJV Judge not according to the appearance. But, judge righteous judgement. and i`m also going to be honest with you their has been many times God confronted me on this issue about who i think is anointed and who is not. some gospel artist that i thought was not anointed God showed me confronted me and told me that so n so is. their was a time i thought God was not glorified in pop music yet i learned a lesson from that. i`ll give you Gospel artist my generation grew up on that are anointed that is Chris tomlin and christy nockels matt redman kristian stanfill casting crowns steve curtis chapman. if you have listen to his recent ones he has a mixture of contemporary and pop songs on this album. steve curtis chapman does have. it is called worship and believe. also aaron shust and kari jobe and so on these Gospel artist are anointed of God and they do sing old hymns and even God blesses them with the gift of composing writing new songs. but yes God has drawn the line in the sand when it comes to how many styles God is Glorified and what does not glorify him. yes it is true God is the same yesturday today and forever yet if you do your research through different generations God did things in the young ones that the some or a few elders did not like because it is not like the way things where when they where kids. God does things differently in each generation. so remember this scripture John 7:24 KJV Judge not according to the appearance. But, judge righteous judgement. but also let me say this whatever style of music your great grand parents listened to in church the world was using it as well. so in saying that if you do your studies you will find that whatever style of music the 1800`s played the church played same for through the 1900`s as well. and even today as well. but again their are some styles that don`t belong in church.but again John 7:24 KJV Judge not according to the appearance. But judge righteous judgement.

The pentecostal movement began in 1905 at the Azuza street revival. The worship HERITAGE of the modern pentecostal church were based on hymns written in the 1800's by people like Fanny Crosby, Ira Sankey and many others. The Modern pentecostal church has modern songs now that appeal by and large to those steeped in rock and roll music and driven not by the Spirit, but by turning up the volume and calling it annointed rather than what it is - Rock music. Anyone can stir up a crowd by turning up the volume - but all you have really done is stir up the flesh. Discerning what music is pleasing to God or not is the real test. The old hymns had Doctrine from God's word, the news ones by and large have repetitive phrases. There are a some new songs that are very holy and uplifting and deserve to be worship songs. News songs and hymns are waiting to be written. Get with it by God's Grace..

It seems to me that a lot of the worst church fights and church splits that center on the piano or organ bench is about sexual affairs of the best musician that that church has to offer or who is a relative if the pastor. The church I attended from the ages 8 to 13 was a split off of a Pentecostal church in Kentucky that was part of the Pentecostal outpouring of 1906-07. The pastor's daughter had a publicly known affair and the pastor kept her on the piano bench. That church survived but the church split was ugly and a later split from the church that had split off of the first church was even uglier. That was about nepotism, but it is more frequent that talent that keeps the person who is not living a Christian life as a musician or praise leader. It often is musicianship but not always that pastors become addicted to. Sometimes it is the ability to move people to worship God. Some people have an ability to manipulate an audience's emotions. Others have a genuine anointing from God but have not chosen to live a holy life in spite of God's soecial gift. They are able to move people to spiritual worship and preachers love to preach to people who are already in communion with God. I have seen this many times. I understand why pastors don't want such musicians to step down and I can't even say how a pastor handle such issues in every case. However, there are usually serious repercussions. I wish that all people who are gifted and chose to serve the Lord in church would take seriously how they not only affect their own lives when they give themselves over sin, but affect the health of their church. and the mystery of the church's unity. I assume that many people watching Bill and Gloria talk about worship are musicians and worship leaders. Don't be the cause of a church split. Decide to live holy or step down from a position of church leadership in music until you are ready to repent and live holy. You don't have to have lived a blameless past life to serve as a church musician, but while you serve as a church musician live the best life you know how to live with God's help.

I love Bill and Gloria. They have been an amazing force for Christian music for many years. But I slightly disagree with Bill on one issue. I believe that more songs written by composers like Fanny Crosby have "stuck" and will "stick to the wall" than most of what's being written today. That's evidenced by the fact that many churches still sing these classic standards. And that's further proven by how many contemporary writers "lift" the words from these standards, and sing them to an altered melody or incorporate them into a medley of contemporary songs. Again, I also doubt that will happen with most of today's songs because most will never be standards.

When did any view other than the Gospel view matter? I wonder what God has to say about humanity dissecting and diagraming theory of what is aesthetic to the human.

As Jesus said When he was told his Mother and brothers were here. He said who is my mother and who is my brother? meaning no one is above another tho we are called to honor our mother and widows. It is in a different sense and tho the Gaithers might be Godly people God does not look at them any different than you or I if we follow his word which mean believe what Jesus did at the cross and thats what matters.

It is the older, successful music minister to " the church," sharing what is the tried and true things that make up a successful music ministry. The things that the Gaithers have learned in the field. Part of what the church has done, is not to share wisdom that is gained from the past generations. We can either bring along the next generation and help them grow in the fear & admonishon of the Lord, or stand back as we see them stumble along and watch them fall by the wayside because we have done all singing and no learning. I say
let's do a lot more teaching and the Lord will tell us when the time for singing has begun.

NOT SURE what has happened to Modern Worship.... IT all sounds the same...synths, guitars, drums, blah blah blah... the melodies are not learnable they go nowhere, they don't really inspire - this lecture is inspiring... what is lacking in Modern Worship
