I've just spent 3 days repotting, pruning, propagating etc a whole house full of plants! My mom asked me to come help her because I "have a green thumb" but honestly 98% of my plant knowledge comes from your videos! 😅
Trimming the Jade Plant will make it branch. You could with time achieve a canopy look. I would trim A lot to achieve a bonsai look personally. But if you are going to be putting it outside you would probably want to check when it's right to trim. I could never do that in Canada so I have no idea 😅
I'd leave the jade as-is for the time being to see what impact the repot has on it. You can always cut it back later if you want. I think it was a good decision to use the bigger pot for the combined Meredithii. The leaves on that one can be really big. I bought a 2-leaf cutting that was in a little cup. It looked a little ridiculous and kept falling over. I potted it up pretty quickly after I got it. It gave me a few leaves about the size of the ones on yours and then gave me a really gigantic leaf that I love so much! It hasn't done much since then, but I'm okay with that. It worked hard to get that giant leaf out and deserves a rest. haha. Safe travels to you and Ross! Hope you have a great trip.
Claire when I have a plant that the top soil is like that I use a sharp stick much like one that comes with a orchid to stick through the top soil and loosen it that way it works quite well. I hope you and Ross have a wonderful holiday 😊
Enjoying my cup of coffee watching this too ! I totally understand how you feel about Joli's improvement. I'm happy she's grown so much, and you've given her such a safe space to do so as well. My sister is the same way with her rescue Lab/Pit Bull mix who is just the silliest girl ever. She was quite scared of children actually for a long time and will hide or get scared . She lived in a home where she was abused and the children were allowed to beat her. She feels very vulnerable with a human that is her height around. She's doing so much better and it can be emotional to see her growth. Well done to you and Joli! You're so lucky to be together.
I have a similar large jade plant that I repotted last year 15yrs old ish) It too had gone solid. I gave it a bigger pot and tried to break up the root ball a little. It had a massive shock after and dropped lots of leaves but did get over it and then any bare bits of stem started filling out with new growth all the way along them. I recently lopped off some lower branches as it was getting a wide but it's doing great! They are so resilient.
Usually when i know a plant is so root bound i would soak the soil at least for a few days before repotting it to a nice fresh airy soil. Also pruning all the dead leaves too give it a full fresh healthy look for new growth in the process. Once plant settles i also give fertiliser to it. Outdoor plants i mix slow fertiliser into the soil.
jade plant is very resilient and will tolerate trimming roots when they’re root bound. i’ve had cuttings thrown on top of soil and have rooted after being forgotten. so don’t be afraid to trim some of roots
Jade plants love sunlight and its leaves can get reddish colouring when sun-stressed. it grows outdoor in the ground in warmer conditions. I live in LA, and my jade plant is a bush now
I was thinking the same thing. I would cut at least a fourth of the roots at the bottom then loosen up the rest a bit. My plants take off like crazy after that
I feel you. I have like 120 houseplants and usually take a extra day off from work the day before vacation to pack my suitcase and water/get ready all my plants :D
I bought a rescue from a grocery store. It was root bound like yours. Mine is one that has small curly leaves. I loosened the roots and potted in a sand, pearlite and coco coir..just a little of that. In a month the leaves were growing where thay were missing.. For yours id trim the longer branches. It will regrow leaves. I put some ozmocote in. And water every couple of weeks with dilute orchid feed.
If that was my jade plant I would either chose the branches I wanted to wire & cut the rest to bonsai it or I would cut it way back to allow it to leaf out. It appears that the boxes have a lot of condensation on the sides that will mold. If you add some air holes for the moisture to escape & air to circulate a little, it won’t mold.
Hello!! I have adhd, and have learned that conventional schedules just don’t work for me. You might be the same! I’ve sort of created my own list system as an alternative. I basically write down everything that needs to get done that week on a list. Then I just do the individual tasks whenever I want. I prioritize things that need to get done sooner of course. This can be overwhelming for some people, but it work well for me. Maybe you need to create your own personalized, system that works? I really recommend figuring out what’s easiest/most intuitive for you, rather than what you think you “should” be doing. Like maybe give yourself breaks between tasks to scroll? Or possibly just do the one task over a few days rather than trying to do it all at once.
I have a very similar jade-bought for £10!!! Same size as yours but stems are much more crazy-I too love it’s crazy growth & don’t wish to prune! I gad to reroot it as they all died after I repotted it. Good luck & hope it does well xxx
I would just leave the jade as is It looks unique I would not cut it back Just needs fresh soil and a nice clay pot! In this area they grow like bushes and most people do not have them in the house I never vacation as I have too many pets and too many plants and I really do prefer to stay home! Always enjoy your long videos *my favorite* Have a lovely vacation
That Jade actually looks quite healthy and growing natural... they really do look like that in nature. Look on Wikipedia. They can reach 2.5 meters tall. If you want to know about pruning and how to use a root rake to deal with the roots check out the Bonsai Zone and also Xavier's Bonsai Retreat on RUclips... I can't remember, but I think Notion Bonsai might have a few videos on Jade as well. Watching these guys will also help you be less nervous about pruning roots. Oh, and you mentioned in another video not wanting to cut roots on a plant because the roots weren't very full, but root pruning causes branching and growth in roots just like pruning the top of a plant triggers growth and branching (just make sure it's the right time of year!).
You have a plant next to you on the floor in a white pot. It looks like a philodendron Campii. Mine is definitely limping along. I’d love to see a care video on it.
Did you know, you can add a timeout for social media? Youmcan Limit your use of tiktok time. If you know, you can be distracted for hours and hours, Set your self a Limit auf then the Apps is shut down. Maybe that will help to notice how time flies by
if you like how the jade is growing then just let it be, you can always cut it lster if you change your mind. And for the alocasia dragon breath, it´s a reused jar from pickles or something, I would have just broken the jar to make sure I don´t damage the roots. If you put it in a plastic bag you should be able to beak it without having glass splinters everywhere.
Hope your Holiday is/was amazing! As for the Jade… I would say let it grow wild if you are going to grow it outdoors at some point. But if you are growing it inside, I think your aesthetic would eventually not appreciate it as you do now. ❤🌸
I love that Jade plant, I like that it's unconventional. If you did want to encourage growth without pruning it could be worth trying Kiki paste. I've never used it but seen others that have had great success.
Hi Claire, I would definitely hard prune that jade back. At one time, I let my jade get wild like yours, and I hated it, so I lopped it all back. It looks a lot better now, although it needs a repot. Like you, I have a bazillion crassula ovata, and a number of different varieties too. I have become quite fond of jade, over the years, but at first, I wasn't crazy about them either. I pot all my mature jade in terra cotta.
Love watching your videos 👍😘 Hope you have an amazing holidays Let the jade grow wild but if you want to put it outside, bring it back inside for the winter as water in the leaves can freeze 😢 Its how ive lost mine few years back😔
I love your videos (and Joli🥰) The repotting videos are always motivational for me 😊 As a little tip: In the botanical name of a plant the genus has a capital letter while the species hasn't. So it would be Crassula ovata for example.
4:35 This is totally an ADHD habit. I don’t know how to harness it. Supposedly breaking down tasks into smaller bits and setting artificial deadlines for them helps. It never works for me, I know they are not real deadlines.
Can you do a video on how you would decide what potting medium to use in what circumstances e.g. what substrates vs moss vs perlite vs semi hydro vs hydro.. what's the best for what genus and age
When dealing with dense roots, I use a root rake, you can find them with bonsai supplies! They make life a little easier when sorting out those beefy root discs.
So, fun fact: Whilst watching this video, my cats knocked my humidier over, onto my PC screen, which then knocked it onto my dad and send veryhot water spilling over both me and my dad. My dad was also sleeping... So uh. Yeah. Edit: If it were my plant, I think I'd just leave it to grow how it is and put it on the balcony, honestly. As it grows, the structure will change and it'll fix it self. Like, most of my jade plants upstairs have a lot of natural branching, and they're doing fine. They look a bit wild, but that doesn't hurt the plant unless it starts throwing the plant out of balance.
Hello, love your video's Claire, but I thought I should let you know that I'm pretty sure the Hoya has been wound clockwise rather than anti-clockwise 😬 Sorry! Also very much on the side of let the jade go wild!
You say you have lots of jade plants, so why not let yourself go with your instincts with this one? Don't prune it, let it be its quirky self, and try it on your balcony - sounds like a great plan to me!
I love your videos and watch for the plant info and you-calming voice, personality, etc- and having you in the background helps me with my adhd and my focus. Your chats about adhd and its effects always are relatable and affirming 🫶
I've just spent 3 days repotting, pruning, propagating etc a whole house full of plants! My mom asked me to come help her because I "have a green thumb" but honestly 98% of my plant knowledge comes from your videos! 😅
oh, please let the jade grow wild! it’s wonderful the way it is 👌🏻
Those roots are probably why it hasn’t been overwaterable. It probably drank up the water as soon as it was poured!
Trimming the Jade Plant will make it branch. You could with time achieve a canopy look. I would trim A lot to achieve a bonsai look personally. But if you are going to be putting it outside you would probably want to check when it's right to trim. I could never do that in Canada so I have no idea 😅
I place some paper towel on top of my diy soil mix to absorb moisture and preveht mould - might work with the worm castings too 💚
That also works for veggies/salad in the fridge too 😁
@@laurajackson8556 ooh yes 😊
Some holes in the lid could help too. Basically just need some airflow
I'd leave the jade as-is for the time being to see what impact the repot has on it. You can always cut it back later if you want. I love watching these repotting videos!!❤
Have a good trip! Yay! Enjoy :)!
Uploaded 35 seconds ago! What a great time for my last video to end 😂 that's my next 45 minutes sorted!
I have a bunch of alocasias on my wishlist too. I only have 4 right now, trying again and these are actually still alive after a month 😮

I have been waiting for you to do the big jade!❤❤❤❤
Have a wonderful vacation 🏝️😀🇨🇦
I’d keep the Jade plant as it is. I love the way it looks! 🪴

You can soak it in water to get the hard dirt off. I do that or rinse them off with a hose or in my shower. Doing it that way I dont break the roots.
If that was my jade plant I would either chose the branches I wanted to wire & cut the rest to bonsai it or I would cut it way back to allow it to leaf out.

This is what I do too!
Happy Holiday!
I would leave the jade as it is, I love the 'crazy' shape 😍😍😍
Omg the new hair looks so good! Brightens your face soooo much 🤗
Thank you for teaching me so much! 🪴 Love your content. Safe travels 💚

All those things are normal. Anxiety serves a purpose. Not extreme anxiety but deadlines makes us get moving.

I second The Bonsai Zone for a library of information on just about every type of tree, including Jades. I love Nigel's videos!
Love your videos 📹 ❤️
Have a great weekend 😀 😊 😎
Right on time for my plant chores 😁

Leave the jade plant as it is. I love the more unexpected look of succulents.😍
Just in time to do some repotting!

Let it grow Wild!! 🎉
Let it grow wild!!! 🤩
I use chopsticks that come with takeout to help loosen up compacted soil. We use ikea chopsticks so I always have the takeout ones if I need them.
Claire! Watching something on channel Sky-SciFi called Room 104. Series 3, Episode 12.
The room reminded me of your plants 😂
It’s worth a watch x
if you like how the jade is growing then just let it be, you can always cut it lster if you change your mind.

hi! I found your channel a couple days ago, and I'm thoroughly enjoying your content! could I just say that you look like jamie campbell bower 😅
4:35 This is totally an ADHD habit. I don’t know how to harness it. Supposedly breaking down tasks into smaller bits and setting artificial deadlines for them helps. It never works for me, I know they are not real deadlines.
i would probably only prune the top part of the jade plant, making only the upper part fuller. so it looks like an actual tree
Don't prune Claire...... let him go WILD!!😁
Can you do a video on how you would decide what potting medium to use in what circumstances e.g. what substrates vs moss vs perlite vs semi hydro vs hydro.. what's the best for what genus and age
Let it be wild! You can always chop later.
Perfect! I need to dust my plants.
You need to trim the jade back 75% of leggy branches off.
Id actually love if i had a jade like that. a few prunes and i feel that would bush out lovely! also where are you trousers from?
When dealing with dense roots, I use a root rake, you can find them with bonsai supplies! They make life a little easier when sorting out those beefy root discs.

If I'm worried about mould I rinse or soak whatever is mouldy in a hydrogen peroxide solution (3% diluted 1:3)
👍
Please prune the jade…
❤❤
could you soak that jade to loosen?
I don't prune my jade plants at all... didn't realise you were 'supposed' to?
Dont trim the jade plant! ITS SO COOL!
Thats hoya sp sabah epc 961 not meredithii
Please stop talking so much and show us what we are here for…. The plants😂
