  • In July 1965, ITN's Alan Hart travelled to Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands to speak to those who were convinced of the existence of the Loch Ness Monster. More than one eyewitness Hart spoke to described Nessie as being grey in colour, similar in texture to an elephant. One spotter believed it to be pletheosaur (Plesiosaurus), a species of dinosaur extinct for 70 million years. Others believed Nessie was a mollusc. While the debate about which exact species Nessie belonged to was alive and well, among these eyewitnesses there was no doubt as to Nessie's existence.
Today begins the largest search for the Loch Ness Monster in 50 years. Organised by the local Loch Ness Centre, an international brigade of Nessie enthusiasts are taking part in a two-day "surface watch". The volunteers will monitor the loch - online and in person -for any irregular movements, heat patterns, or breaks in the water's surface.
