@It's Kan, the main villain is horrible, the plot is all sorts of rubbish, the main hero gets nothing to do, Mary Sue saves the day at the end, the humor ruins everything, so on and so on.
@It's Kan, the humor is actually pretty awful and it completely lessens any emotional impact the movie could have. Which isn't surprising, considering that the humor was written by the same "genius" who wrote The Predator, a movie so bad, it makes Alien vs. Predator Requiem look like a masterpiece. And it's just in general the problem of most of the MCU movies, which always rely on dumb, badly written humor as a substitute for real writing. Garbage movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Spider-Man Homecoming come to mind.
"Tell me how the plot is bad."
The setup of the main villain, the way he and the main hero are connected, is poorly written and stupid. A guy gets mad at Tony Stark for dumping him on a party and decides to wage war on the whole world. Terrible.
The decisions which the characters make make no sense. Maya Hansen comes to warn Tony Stark about an attack coming after him, but she is then revealed to work for the bad guy who arranged that attack, which means that she willingly went there to warn Stark and Pepper about the attack while knowing that she can get killed as well.
The entire idea behind the attack, in which Stark willingly asks someone to come and kill him, is dumb.
"The villain is supposed to be a joke of misdirect. Even Tony in the story admits it's ridiculous."
I'm not talking about the Mandarin. I'm talking about the actual villain of the movie, the one who used the fake villain to cover up his plans. Aldrich Killian, that guy. He's an awful villain. Maybe you don't remember him. Which I understand; nobody remembers him.
"It's a pure comic book fun fest."
It's very hard to see Iron Man 3 as "pure comic book fun" when Iron Man 3 shits all over those comics on which it's supposed to be based on.
"The action scenes r different and creative."
CGI-fests with lazy jokes, like all MCU movies. Nothing different or creative here.
"Stark adapting without his suit is very poetic and fun."
It's hard to call it poetic when it's: A) Plays out like a spoof. B) Stark does not adapt, because he does need his suits in the end. Not one, not two, not even three, but dozens of suits to save the day. The movie actually proves that Stark is nothing without his suit.
Tony: *has proved he build these suits with almost ease*
People: “HE BLEW UP HIS SUITS HE CANT HAVE ANYMORE WHY DOES HE STILL HAVE SUITS THATS IMPOSSIBLE”
I mean it’s not like... he can just build another suit right?
He built the first suit in a week "with a box of scraps!"
I think it's more of an "empty gesture". I have a similar issue with Thor: Ragnarok; Tony Stark destroys his suits but builds them with ease anyway and the next avengers/spiderman film shows that, so all he did was cause some expensive fireworks to go off to maybe prove a pedantic point to himself or his girlfriend. Thor loses an eye. He now has to live with a disability. It mirrors Odin's life, Thor has, in a sense, finally stepped into the shoes of his father.
Except the next film gives him an eye and murders his people so Thor loses all of the character growth and the prosthetic is so functionally identical to a real eye that Thor basically has an eye tattoo.
The MCU is afraid of lasting consequences within their solo endeavours. Characters can't commit to a lot of change, at least, nothing that can't get undone before the end or at the start of the next. Iron Man has PTSD for exactly 1 film, Thor loses and eye for maybe 40 minutes of screen time between two films. I'll bet money Gamorrah gets all of the previous's Gamorrah's memories back and is functionally identical by the next Guardians film.
Bruce has literally had the best and most consequential character arc; He started out as a man struggling to contain the beast within and by Endgame has merged with his inner monster as a middleground compromise that's the best of both worlds.
I think one of the reasons origin stories work so well is because their is a significant change in the status quo. You get to see what the previous normal was and then get to see the new normal. It's also why films like Logan work well, or "old man" films because the new normal is something that just happens to all of us; we age and our bodies don't work as well as they used to.
@@MatthewStevensOrMattDave In a way, Bruce's story benefits from Marvel not making (either due to licensing or some other reason) a standalone Hulk film. His story can't be contained in a movie and its sequels instead it had to be spread throughout the MCU. I definitely get what you mean. It feels like any real stakes are gone. We could've at least gotten one movie of a superhero's origin that occurs during the snap or some sort of impact from all the things which have happened. It seems to be an issue that plagues most superhero stories though, unlikely to change anytime soon.
@@MatthewStevensOrMattDave It wasn't an empty gesture. The only suits we see after this are the Mk. 43, the Hulkbuster, and Mk. 45 until after Civil War. It definitely isn't implied that Tony kept obsessively building suits to stave off his PTSD and anxiety, but he's still Iron Man and making new suits when they are needed (Mk. 45 was made with a new A.I. since Jarvis was uploaded into Vision) is reasonable. The Iron Legion is kind of cheating but he made them with a simple definitive goal, which was to provide extra assistance to the Avengers,
Now funnily enough it was clear that Pepper misunderstood what he was doing since they're still having problems when we come to Age of Ultron, and those don't get fixed until Endgame. The point is these are real tangible effects from Tony's decisions and issues that don't just go away. Hell, it's his anxiety and PTSD along with how Wanda fucks around in his head and sends his fears into maximum overdrive that leads him to create five more suits (up to the Bleeding Edge armor) by Infinity War. That's still only 8 more suits in about a 5-year span. Pretty reasonable if you ask me.
For Thor, well, even if he gets a new eye (something that is apparently very easy to come by since that isn't the only prosthetic eye we see the Guardians interact with) he is still affected by the events of Ragnarok and especially the slaughter of his people. Plus the new eye is crucial because with the lack of depth perception it would have been really embarrassing for him to completely miss that axe throw at Thanos. (OK that's a joke but Rocket pretty much says this when he gives Thor the new eye)
Basically, his physical loss with the eye doesn't directly translate to his internal struggles, so even with the new eye his attitude and outlook don't really change, and once they introduced the idea in the Guardians movies, why not just give him a new eye when he meets up with them? There's pretty much no good reason not to.

And then he just gets a new eye and then gets fat and gives up on life... Well that worked...

I love this movie simply for the reason that it FINALLY addressed Tony's PTSD (in a way) and it was so realistic. It was amazing
There were plans to make Iron Man 3 about Tony’s alcoholism but considering RDJ, it was for the better that they didn’t.

Sploogerz z He was practically infamous for his drug issues to the point where he was seen as a high risk to cast.
After my Panic Attack back in November, I started to like this film more than when I first saw it in theaters.
I really liked this film for a few reasons:
1) a male protagonist who suffers from anxiety and ptsd, and it's portrayed as quite a serious issue. I've seen people who actually have to deal with these conditions say that the film did a good job of showing what it's like to have an attack.
2) the way terrorism is presented. It's more and more apparent these days that some people are more likely to point fingers at someone who's from a middle eastern country or has that look about them than someone who's a bit closer to home. It also shows how much fear terrorism instils in people, which when we find out that Trevor is just an actor seems irrational, but that fear they felt was real even if the mandarin was not, which is very dangerous for a society like ours.
3) the extremis thing felt very different to the other threats in the iron man series. The other two films had villains who were very similar to iron man, in the fact that they were mechanical. This film had a villain who was a threat because of biological engineering, and it really showcases the dangers of that if we meddle too much.
4) tbh I'm always up for more Pepper x Tony moments. They're probably my favourite canon pairing because they have such good chemistry, there was no awkward "getting to know you phase", and pepper was given more of a personality and got shit done rather than being the generic love interest
That's just my opinion though, I can see why people don't like this film
most people hate the mandarin twist and the villain. but for me killian was great and that twist had a huge part on to make him even greater.
people says ''his motivation was weak he just dumped by tony and get ready to kill himself''. when we first saw him, his character was obviously a loser and we can see that even before tony, nobody gave a damn about him for his whole life and plus he was crippled. and this kind of thinks can easily push people to the dark ways. personally i found his motivation uniqe because most villains motivations being like ''i want revenge and nothing else matter'' or ''im gonna do all this bad things for greater good''. now these are good too but killian's actions show how human beings can be so sensitive and unstable even agains the most simple psychological wounds. just like electro from TASM 2 they didnt use one big motivation but a lot of little motivation.
and this twist was brilliant because it show us how he got from 0 to 100 by using his own insignificance Instead of letting it kill himself. a little-known comic book villain use a well known archenemy's name for bait people and when people look another way he risen and he was about to take the position of the most powerful man in the world
also I'm glad there's no Mandarin in this movie. because first of all they have to give him those alien tech rings and they have to make relatable story for them.
second i prefer more modern designed mandarin. just like the mandarin from iron man armored adventures. not some fire-lord ozai looking guy

I think the difference between Extremis and the villains in the previous movies wasnt its type, it was its origin. First two movies the villains were war profiteers, much like Tony used to be, and were him trying to escape his past. Correct me if I'm wrong, (it's been a while since I saw that movie) but Extremis was created as an attempt to heal. It came out of good intentions but was twisted to be used as a tool in a plot to gain power. This makes the movie not about Tony's past, but his present, and his future in Age of Ultron. How creations made with the best of intentions to help people can cause great suffering if they go astray.

A) His motivation is weak. Getting dumped by someone because they're too busy getting laid is not a good motivation for any villain. A villain should have a motivation that is significant.

yes, stane and hammer similar in the terms of acting and motivations. yet, totally different characters and both jeff bridges and sam rockwell managed to sell us with their acting.
ivan vanco was a good villain both in terms of motivation and being a threat. he has only similarity. with stane , both were wearing armour and thats it.
about killian, was his character better than those other? arguable. but i wont gonna tag him as generic evil business man just because. he was definitely entertaining for me. he can be cocky, cool, calm and yet unstable, psychotic at the same time. like when he found pepper and maya at the hotel. or when he tortures pepper and kill maya in front of tony's eye. he was extremely savage ''is this guy bothering you'' and ''a shame. i would have caught her''.

With regard to Tony giving out his home address, it's not like that information was exactly secret. The guy is a celebrity who has hosted several high profile parties at that house. The more unbelievable aspect is the lack of security from a former weapons manufacturer.
He's a multi billionaire with heaps of (mostly automatic) weaponized suits. Why would he think to have security?
In case a bunch of helicopters show up and blow up his house? just saying a few aa guns run by Jarvis wouldn't hurt.

It was great to see her at the end of this year' s "Spider - Man : Homecoming (2017 ) " .
I'd also add to the control aspect of Tony's PTSD isn't just that he had to lose, but that in those moments he thought would be his last, he saw the chitari ship, and the cosmos beyond, and nothing makes you feel small, insignificant, and out of control like space.
"Rescue to the rescue." That's even more satisfying/also slightly heartbreaking watching this after Endgame.
This is my favorite Iron Man movie. But I think that's because it feels really personal to RDJ himself. Just as Tony Stark is Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. is Tony Stark. In the end, when he throws the Arc Reactor into the ocean, the fact that he has it in a paper bag, that feels very symbolic to RDJ's own struggles with substance abuse. It's the perfect bookend to the American cheeseburger from the first movie, too. RDJ had them include that because eating a cheeseburger saved his life. In fact, I just read that after eating the cheeseburger that saved his life, RDJ threw all his drugs into the ocean. So, yeah, this movie is so much more than another installment to the MCU for me. And that's why I love it so much.

FINALLY SOMEONE SEES THAT PARALLEL TOO!! I noticed the ending of Iron man 3 was a parallel to him quitting drugs once and for all (whether the parallel was intentional or not.) Him finally deciding to undergo surgery to remove the the small thingy (I don’t know what it’s called lol) was him starting over and realizing that he’s more than just iron man and his suits (choosing recovery and starting over, realizing he’s more than a felon and an addict and has more to offer.)Throwing the one thing that was keeping him alive at one point (arc reactor/drug stash) and letting it go for good. This with the Burger King thing are great. And for some reason I didn’t see anyone else talking about this one this way, it’s very interesting.

@@ilbwfy1550 he went to burger king one time durring his days of substance abuse and he said while driving and eating it, the burger tasted so bad it literally made him stop and thinm about what he was doing with his life. Where he then proceded to pull over and throw the drugs he had on him at the time into the ocean

Actually, nobody who worked on the movie thought of it as a risk. You can search an interview with Shane Black where he states that neither he or Marvel execs thought of it as a risk, since Mandarin isn't that well known as a villain. And he also talks about how MCU nixed the original villain, who was a female, because of the fear that toys won't sell as well or some crap.

ToadWasTaken late to the party but. They’re both valid points. Marvel is boring because it doesn’t take a risk. So it’s disliked. Then they take a risk that’s bad. So it’s disliked for being bad. You don’t get a pass because you flip the coin. You get props for flipping the coin and calling it right.

honestly i think the biggest reason this became my favorite iron man was how RDJ acted out anxiety, panic attacks and PTSD. If an actor can make the viewer have a slight panic attack reaction just watching them panic, then they are doing an amazing job xD

As someone who suffers from ptsd and panic attacks, the way this film presented Tony’s mental health issues was perfect to me. It’s taken seriously, it’s treated with the respect it deserves, RDJ’s performance was phenomenal, and, not ONCE does anyone ever make a joke about it. Even Harley who’s probably too young to understand what exactly it is never once teases Tony about it. I genuinely do love the whole film but it’s portrayal of trauma and anxiety is one of the best I’ve seen. Bravo!
I as well am afflicted and RDJ does a great job of presenting it because I do with trauma in general and joke similar to Tony but for the PTSD episodes, there is no joking it's something different. Also to people saying why didn't he get PTSD from being stuck in the cave my answer is he clearly did have low levels just not manifesting into panic attacks until after the Chitori invasion.
I thought the anxiety attacks were very well done as someone who has suffered from anxiety in the past.

hawkeye is the kinda guy that can throw a rock that then ricochet ten timed and hit's someone right in the back of their heads.

As someone who has dealt with PTSD for long periods of my life, Tony's representation of what it is like is extremely accurate. While I know that not every person experiences PTSD in the same way, the panic attacks, constant anxiety, being triggered by a seemingly harmless question, always being on edge, constantly scanning for threats and how to escape if something were to happen, etc, etc are all things that I experience frequently. PTSD also, at least in my experience, fluctuates. Sometimes it's really bad for long periods of time, and other times, I go months without an attack or something similar. This could explain Tony's "getting over his PTSD too quickly" Humor is also something I and many other with PTSD I know use to shield ourselves from pain, to make others think and even trying to convince ourselves that we are fine with the humor smoke screen. I really love how Tony and his trauma were depicted in this movie as I think it brings a lot of awareness to others and might allow people to recognize those in their lives that might be struggling.
I have PTSD so I can explain it a bit better...
When you think you're going to die, and if you have to wait to see if it happens or not. You might let the "fear and stress" inside you it may never leave. That feeling of waiting for yourself to die may never go away. Either way you're dead. The person you were is gone whether you or anyone realizes it. The best I can describe what PTSD feels like is almost always feeling like your going to die.
It might be troubling to hear and I don't want anyone to do this because it's not worth it but, putting that gun to your head can be one of the most peaceful feeling ever.
I hope you can sympathize and understand.

Based on this little spiel, it sounds like either you die, or you realize that we all die in the end, and reconcile that fact with yourself. I would say that the easiest path to that would be some kind of faith, one where you get a happy-ever-after sort of fate, or finding a purpose bigger than yourself. Incidentally, this is also one of the fastest paths to happiness, and it's a shame so many people have forgotten it.

Mandarin never was "a horribly racist stereotype on Chinese people". I know you Iron Man 3 apologists want to validate your vague opinions on this movie's questionable qualities, but find better ways to defend the movie's flaws. It sucks. Big time.
The problem with the Mandarin and his rings probably would have also been the depiction of Thanos with the Infinity Stones afterwards....2 villains with hand-jewelry based powers might have been too much. I know that they are completely different, but depicting it might have been hard.
Cage wasn't a lowlife crook that ended up in prison for drugs. He was framed for the murder of his fiance. He charged people what they could pay because he needed to actually eat and put a roof over his head, and if you ever actually read a Cage comic you'd know that he rarely actually got paid by customers, but rather from being on retainer for both the Defenders, and for a short while, the Fantastic Four, and what money he made was usually spent buying new shirts because they'd keep getting destroyed.
And yes, Mandarin is basically a ripoff of Fu Manchu, and extremely racist caricature. That is literally what he was designed to be since he was created back during the red scare. MFer's skin was yellower than a Simpsons character.
And I'm not an IM3 apologist, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Just because you didn't doesn't make you right. Also, Mandarin got beaten like a pathetic idiot A LOT in the comics.

That whole subplot about crippled veterans went to nowhere and was not explored at all. Personally, I like the Mandarin twist. Many people know the character and had an idea what to expect (I liked the Iron-Man like armor from the TV show) but to suddenly subvert expectations that hard to something that isn't comic accurate? I think its creative and brilliant. I was expecting rings with Hydra weapon technology but got an actor just acting. It blew my mind to learn he wasn't actually behind it all in any way besides just being the face
The way Downey delivers "No, you're in a relationship with me, everything will never be okay." Should be a win all on it's own, you can feel the emotion behind that statement.
i do have a lot of memories thanks to this movie, i went to see it with my dad and thanks to that movie we were more closer like father and son, and it was thanks to that i'll never forget my dad now that he is gone

There’s something endearing about how Tony took the time to salvage DUM-E and U from the wreckage of the mansion. Especially since he could have easily built new replacements for them and has described himself as not being nostalgic.

I know this was from way before Endgame but just want to clarify. His PTSD didn't get solved "easily". He still had it come up occasionally and it lasted till his last breath when Pepper told him "you can rest now" *sobs*
I'd say the time machine is probably Tony's last creation out of his anxiety while the rest was him genuinely happy working coordinately with the team, and the team had full faith in him and his "cursed with knowledge" brain.

The fact is Iron Man 3 is a prime example of, no matter how good a film is, if you ruin a major character like the Mandarin, fans will not like the film in the slightest.
Edit: The big reveal was quite genius. If this was a film wasn’t based on a comic book, it’d be hugely praised.
The movie itself was also flawed. While yes from a personal standpoint I hate IM3 mostly because they RUINED one of my favorite villains... just as F4 RUINED Doom and Galatics. But the other problem was the lack of Iron Man in Iron Man 3. He was only in the suit for like 30% of the movie (similar reason amazing Spider-Man 2 failed).
Do you know how hype the world got when the first trailer showed The Mandarin and a prototype Hulkbuster.. one of the best villains vs one of the best suits.. yet we got cockteased.
The movie does have a few other minor flaws, i.e. Killian being a pretty lame villain anyways
Dante Kiyoshi Lack of Iron Man isnt a problem. If you think it really is, then you missed the entire point of the movie, which is kinda dumb since they literally spell it for you.
The fact that stark has 42 suits at his disposal yet dons the only one thats a prototype with no weapon capabilities, has nothing else to defend his home with and spends alot of the movie trying to repair said suit despite having more fully operational suits that can be called to him at any moment is annoying to me. Tony starks whole character is that hes a genius billionaire inventor who can make an arc reactor with a bunch of missile parts in a cave so making a movie focusing on what he can do without his money and tech is what brought the movie down for me

Captain America asks in a very condescending way "big man in a suit of armor,take thast off what are you?" For which Tony responds very quickly genius billionaire playboy philanthropist. That coupled with the rest of that argument and what happened at the end of The Avengers and Tony was clearly dealing with PTSD and while he may not have shown it during The Avengers what cap said to him did it affect him. Him asking himself what is he really without his suits? The whole point was to prove that with or without the suit he is Iron Man he is a hero.

hated this when it first came out, i was extremely let down but looking back, now that I've seen how things went, i'm not that turned off by it.
In the very grounded universe of Iron Man(not the Avengers or MCU), having a Mandarin with magical rings wouldnt make a whole lot of sense.
Killian ended up being almost immortal and very powerful due to science, not magic. So that is a win for the Iron Man universe.
I knew about the "fake out" before watching, and I guess that took off most of the sting. I actually feel it was a good thing that we didnt had to have a long background story presented to us in the middle of the movie. It could have easily ruined the pacing completely.

I feel like they chose to be a tease in the trailer because they wanted to invoke a specific response, and when we saw the film, we discover that this potentially powerful and dangerous thing is an illusion and there's much more going on behind the scenes, it's...theatre, literally, and thematically.
Can you please do a "Everything GREAT About the Grey"? I think it is a very underrated movie with a strong and powerful existential message that many people missed. Plus it has some of the hardest hitting and most memorable scenes I have ever seen in a movie. This is my 4th petition.

I've never understood the big deal of Tony giving his address on TV. I would think given who he is and the look and location of the house that it would be common knowledge. Him issuing the challenge is catalyst for the attack.
Just to add to your mention of PTSD. In the movie they mostly handled it well. I’ve been dealing with clinical PTSD, clinical depression and clinical anxiety since I was 14 (I’m nearly 23) and they got most of it right. Some of the panic attacks were a little over done but otherwise they did it very well. Also please finish the Batman and the Transformers series and also please do Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings.
