Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) reveals her manipulative ways to an already brokenhearted Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In an adaptation of Choderlos de Laclos' novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) are step-brother and step-sister living in Manhattan. With their absent parents travelling in Europe, the wealthy pair have the family penthouse to themselves as they while away their summer break before beginning senior year at a private high school. Sebastian, bad-boy lothario, has apparently slept with all the girls in town and appears numb to it all. Kathryn, who appears to be the good girl class president, is actually far more amoral and malicious than Sebastian, but maintains appearances to the contrary. When she is dumped by her boyfriend, Court Reynolds (Charlie O'Connell), for the innocent Cecile Caldwell (Selma Blair), she schemes revenge by destroying Cecile's reputation. She challenges Sebastian to deflower Cecile and transform her into a tramp to humiliate Court. Sebastian isn't as interested as Cecile -- she's spent her whole life in a Catholic girl's school and presents no challenge. The girl who has caught his attention is Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), the new headmaster's daughter. Annette had written an article for Seventeen Magazine on her plans to stay a virgin until she finds her one true love. Kathryn makes a wager. If Sebastian fails to lure Annette into bed before the summer is over, Kathryn gets his car. If he succeeds, Sebastian gets Kathryn, whom he wants anyway. Sebastian accepts the bet, but Annette turns out to be more than either of them bargained for.

The clip at the end shows that she’s mad that he fell in love. She wanted him all to herself and knew that really SHE lost him so she had to project her hurt onto him. Classic narcissist.

More than that, I think she didn't want to be left alone in her madness and refusal to love.
I don't think it was so much that Kathryn was in love with Sebastian. She's incapable of love, but she never had to confront that as long as she had Sebastian around to project her own self-loathing upon.
To see Sebastian fall in love with someone else made her realise how empty she really was. The one person who was supposed to belong to her, and he was now immune to her charms. She lost all her power over him, and the only way she could get it back was to eliminate the girl motivating him to be a better person.
But getting him back wasn't enough. She wanted to punish him for his disloyalty to her, to ensure he felt even worse than she did.
Then she got what was coming to her in the very end!!!

Ok now I know that no one probably noticed this but check out her eyes. She never breaks eye contact and she only blinks when her tone changes or when she enunciates certain words. Going from very matter-of-factly to devious to slightly playful to ice cold. This is a master class in body language and nonverbal communication. SMG gets a lot of crap for this role but this is a stellar performance by her.
She was the best part of the movie, and made a very memorable character

@@shanefolan She originally manipulated Sebastian into breaking up with Annette by threatening Annette. She does threaten his reputation but its only when Kathryn picks up the phone calling Annette's dad does Sebastian hang up the phone and decide to break up with Annette. However in this scene Kathryn acts as if he did it because of his reputation. Sebastian was so worried about how he screwed things up with Annette he didn't realize Kathryn was manipulating him again.

@@zeaferjones1404 I believe Kathryn is lying when he tells Sebastian that he turned Annette away because of the harm his reputation would suffer. Sebastian had earlier stated that he was concerned about his reputation. However, he was only concerned about Annette's reputation.
Kathryn knew this as well. If Kathryn told Sebastian he broke up with Annette because of his concern of the exposure Annette would receive for the loss of her virginity, Kathryn would be praising him as opposed to condemning him. Kathryn really wanted to rub it in but she was not gloating. She was badly hurting as she knew she had been badly defeated. She at that point wanted to cause her step-brother the maximum amount of harm, including having Ronald beat him.
Even though Sebastian broke hearts of women, those tears appearing in his eyes in this scene makes me get teary eyed because you can tell that underneath everything he was simply an unhappy person. Falling in love with Annette made him realize a lot. He said it himself near the end...his life was a joke.
I wonder if he inspired of John Malkovich, who had tears in his eyes too when he came to announce to Glenn Close he ditched Michelle Pfieffer in the famous 1988 movie...

Everyone saying she was just evil, yes that's true but she was obviously more jealous than anything. I don't think she tried toyed with Sebastian here for amusement more of out being jealous and bitter. You could tell she either had genuine feelings for Sebastian or just hated the fact he became besotted with someone else and not her, and it dented her ego. Maybe both. She appears to have felt bad by what she said/done when the camera pans to her at the end.

She only cared about winning, manipulating and humiliating people because that's all she had. Nothing else could fill the void of her miserable and swallow existence. Of course she was jelous of Sebastian discovering that even a scumbag like him could be happy just by being honest with himself and everyone else.
She really was jealous and hurt. I think the most honest line she delivers is the one where she finally realises he loves Annette and she says, "You don't love me anymore." She was genuinely sad. Props to Sarah. Her lines were delivered so well.

Considering his journal, this really should not come as a shock. While she masterfully played him, it is not unexpected. Maybe it was arrogance, maybe he thought she wouldn't do to him what she does to everyone else but considering his insight into her personality, he was stupid.

I think she wanted revenge because he was in love with Annette. It REALLY IS the saddest thing ever. She didn’t love him but she felt like he was “hers.” “I can’t have you and I don’t even really want you but I still don’t want you happy with someone else.”
Katherine was a deeply lonely, unhappy being.
The problem is Kathryn was always one step ahead. This isn't Kathryn gloating as Sebestian thinks. This is Kathryn getting him to go where she can send Ronald. All Sebestian had to do was say to Kathryn that he loved Annette and didn't want her reputation being hurt by him and that Kathryn would never understand that sort of sacrifice. However he is still sort of selfish and he wanted Annette back more than anything. He was to stuck on the fact that Kathryn had tricked him he didn't realize she was still manipulating him.

They encouraged each other to hurt people. But while Sebastian had a limit, to the point where he was questioning if they were going too far, Kathryn had no limits. That was Sebastian's biggest mistake. He thought Kathryn would never manipulate him the same way she did everyone else, but he was wrong and it ended up costing him his life.

Even though everyone is saying that Kathryn is evil you can tell that’s she’s really sad. in the final seconds of the clip that look on her face when she says “goodbye Sebastian” It says it all with her blank stare, it shows how miserable she is. 😢😢 I feel bad for her, and Sebastian. The reason why is although they are praying on a girl who hadn’t done anything to them. Their doing it out of misery. That’s not right or wrong it’s just really depressing.

But her feelings and her ego was bruised when he dumped her for someone sweet and naive such as Cecile. So she used Sebastian for revenge, when all he really wanted was Kathryn. In his journal he makes a reference to Kathryn as his love (prior to Annette), the one girl he could never have. Then for him to finally fall for someone he truly loved and throw it away for Kathryn, just for her to do him like that hurt him.
Kathryn is one troubled, wounded, heartless young woman. I feel deep sorrow for a person like this. She has never known love or joy or happiness. She’s a complete stranger to all of it. There are demons inside of her, and this scene explains it beautifully.

I really like how well adapted the story to modern New York (being that the original book is based on aristocratic France before the revolution). It's a very fresh take on a very old story. The acting was so and so, with exception of Kathryn (SMG makes a great villain), compared with the John Malkovich version (Dangerous Liaisons).
I had a friend who was exactly like Kathryn. Funnily enough, her name was Sarah.
I think Katheryn is not that evil as she seems... I feel like she was always in love with him. she knew they were in love with each other, but their relationship was way too dysfunctional. so she did this to help him forget about her. she loved him in her own fuc*ed up way. its like she was always wearing a poker face, both good/evil.

I love this scene, she looks so hot there, I was disappointed when she end up winning, but all the scene from the moment she gets out of the car to the moment she has that face where she looks worried because she is about to face the consequences of her actions is glorious indeed.

Kathryn wanted Sebastian to know she was fraternizing with Ronald for two reasons.
1. Once the Valmont Civil War started, Kathryn wanted Sebastian to know she had security. Ronald was a total outsider who was not afraid of Sebastian's thugs. He did not matriculate at Manchester.
2. She could get Ronald to go after Sebastian for Sebastian's sexual activity with Cecille. While this sexual activity was primarily Kathryn's idea, Sebastian knew that Ronald would not know that and that Ronald would take Kathryn at her word. While Cecille could have explained Kathryn's role to Sebastian, Sebastian had no way of knowing for certain what all Cecille would claim that Kathryn told her.
Sebastian thought by blocking Ronald from seeing Kathryn on such an intimate basis, he felt he had succeeded in reducing Ronald as a non-factor. Especially when Sebastian explained to Ronald that Kathryn's advances to Ronald indeed constituted cheating on Cecille. Sebastian thought that any relationship, even if it was just friends, that those two had would be over.
Unfortunately Sebastian failed to heed Kathryn's warning. While Kathryn and Ronald no longer had any intimacy, Sebastian should have suspected that Kathryn would tell Ronald about Sebastian's sexual activity with Cecille. Because Cecille was Ronald's love interest and that she was only 14, that would cause Ronald to go into fighting mode against Sebastian. Sebastian should have known this and he should have understood the reasons why Kathryn was cultivating Ronald. He should have realized that Kathryn had planned the civil war to start and that she would sic Ronald against him.
Please let's not compare all the mean girls, let's put all of them together so we can adore them all

Once Kathryn had succeeded in driving away Annette, she made that monologue to hurt Sebastian in the same manner she believed he hurt her. Earlier when she kissed Sebastian and he resisted, she really thought that he was the one who manipulated and used her.

On the pilot of the New show she admitted she loved him. And I think he loved her to. That's why he wrote "my love" under her photo. That is why he was so hurt.
