You know his material was considered too rad for most of America in the 50s and 60s, which is why he spent so much time in Scandinavia, Australia, England, etc. He could sell out concerts overseas better than his home country, where he had a small niche following, but could never go mainstream here, where his material was considered just too risque. That's why you see subtitles on so many of his videos here.

They just didn't record his national performances, but he certainly performed a lot in the States. He says so in an interview, and at the beginning of his Copenhagen performance he says "...I've come to play these songs for you with which I've bored american audiences with for many years".

Well, as a 23 year-old I've been very into his songs since 12, and even sang his songs on a few occasions(despite being a musician of a different sorts), as not only that I love his ingenious wit(which heavily inspired my own), but also how brutally real and honest his depictions are, perhaps only matched by very few in his lifetime(I can't of anyone except George Carlin, Bill Maher & Bo Burnham, and maybe John Cleese albeit he is a somewhat different breed, but all of them I greatly appreciate). But mind you, I'm an anomaly here, most of my peers aren't even aware of the existence of Tom Lehrer, and a number of them don't even know who George Carlin is!

I grew up listening to Tom's original "Songs by Tom Lehrer"--a 10-inch 33 vinyl album. We lived in Princeton, NJ, and my Dad had gone to Princeton University. Apparently they heard about the album through friends in the Ivy League circuit (Tom having gone to Harvard). My Mom said that when she first heard the album, she told my Dad, "We have to get it!"
I remember as a kid not quite understanding some of his double-entendres, but knew deep down they were funny. When I was in grad school in Massachusetts, I found Tom's phone number in the telephone directory (!) and called him to ask for piano lessons. He chuckled and said he probably wouldn't be very good at it.
Anyway, nowadays I can sing all of his songs by heart. Thanks, Tom. 😀❤️

It gives me great comfort that Ukraine is doing so well in its fight against Russian aggression with minimal Western aid. That seems to make Putin's nuclear saber rattling much less credible.
But that saber rattling still unsettles me a bit: I was born in 1957, when we and the Soviet Union were still testing nuclear weapons above ground.

I guarantee that when Tom Lehrer actually passes away, it'll be on the national - perhaps international - news. As was originally said by one Mark Twain, and inevitably attributed to quite a number of people shortly thereafter, 'Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.'
Thankfully, we live in a much more civilized world nowadays. Most folks would just retweet a quote like that.
    Thanks for posting these videos!

Monty Python, Mad Magazine and Tom Lehr's album "That Was the Year That Was" profoundly influenced me throughout my life--anyway I can sing most of the songs off that album by heart. Me: age 61.

Thank you for the comments. I have tried to watch this in so-called high quality, but cannot see the big difference. But in this version, Lehrer get's to talk a little and that's an improvement. Otherwise, the old versions (which will be kept here) are just as good.

Yes marcr33, that can only be a good thing. Lehrer's songs should be passed on through the generations in the US and elsewhere. If it is up to me, these songs will stay on RUclips as a first introduction, but I really hope that new generations will buy Lehrer's records. That will keep him alive.

You're right, JimC. This was just an experiment. But then again, in this version people will get to hear Lehrer talk. I have even adjusted the sound level up whenever he speaks. And of course I played with the black level to get it more juicy. In those days, they loved "gray TV", whereas Lehrer's humor is black :-)

    An adaptatation I wrote, mid-May of ‘18:
    National Limerick Day
(With a huge “Thank you!” To Tom Lehrer, for “National Brotherhood Week”!)
Well, we versers hate the parsers
    Of our lines a-bout departures,
And the poets will disdain us,
Especially when we speak of jewels!
But just on National Limerick Day,
    That glorious day in May,
We get to verse our hearts out,
And say just what we would say,
So on our National Limerick Day,
When we say all we may,
    Go let the “pious” pray!
We love to break all rules!
When we speak of what sustains us,
And of what might entertain us,
And of who might just enchain us,
You’ll hear all those people cry:
    “Beware of National Limerick Day,
    That horridious day in May,
That day they use those words
    No one may really say!”
    And just on Limerick Day,
    Do what they really pray
    Their affairs on full display,
And their lies reach to the sky!
    When the verses turn salacious,
Or the rhymes get too outrageous,
    And the braggin’ exaggeratious,
We don’t care “what people say”!
For just on National Limerick Day,
We care not whom we lay,
How long, or where, we say,
    Betwixt which pews, OK?
And praise their loins and thews,
    Nipples tippled for their mews,
    Members worthy of the News,
Be grateful that it’s only for one day !!!
