Since you game, this movie might be up your alley The Wizard (1989) - A boy and his brother run away from home and hitch cross country with the help of a girl they meet to compete in the ultimate video game championship.
If you’re ever in the mood for more Stephen Chow, I highly recommend his films Love on Delivery, Fight back to School, and From Beijing With Love; he’s got a lot of good movies in his filmography.
The whole concept of the brother who is a goal keeper is being a look alike to Bruce Lee, even putting the shades on was a Bruce Lee look for his funeral. In the old days China when students learn from the same master they call each other brothers or sisters
About Stephen's chow's shared name "Sing/Singh" in most of his films, it's from his original Chinese name 周星驰(Zhou Xing Chi), or Chow Sing Chi in Cantonese, so almost all of his characters' names are a variation of 星(Sing) or 星星(Sing Sing).
I disagree about the scene where Mui bares her heart to Sing. He just simply never thought about her romantically up to that point. He regarded her as a friend, and respected her mastery of Kung Fu. The dialogue was a little simple for the emotions being portrayed, but he was just being honest with her, which I thought was good on him. He was never stringing her along, but she took his caring of her for something that it wasn't.
Fun fact, the italian edition of this was dubbed not by actors/dubbers but by professional (as in top soccer league) player and coaches. It ended in a bad dub but even more fun!
I loved the fact you're watching the shorter version of the movie in original language, that's the best version for me personally. Loved your reactions!
Great observe about the Sing part .It was because Stephen Chow's real name is Chow "Sing" Chi.In Hong Kong we used to call him as Kid Sing and in cantonese Sing means star. That's why in most of his film his character is always also named Sing.It gets unseperable to him.
Not very many reactors do a heartfelt post-watch fireside chats like this, it's quite calm and refreshing, and it's always fun to hear your well articulated thoughts on the diff aspects of each movie.
(PS: In case you were wondering why the protagonist turned down the girl's love even though he seemed to like her at first, Shaolin is a place for monks that are supposed to never marry or never even have any contact with females. In the movie he was showing kindness and friendliness to her, but it was never love because this is the way for monks. He wasn't turning her down because he got famous. He just didn't understand love or romance) (PS2: The Chinese name of Stephan Chow is Chow SING Chi, hence the consistent use of that name. He's literally Sing in every single movie) Kung Fu Hustle and this Shaolin Soccer movie are the 2 movies from Stephan Chow that got the most fame from the western cultures. That said, some of the lesser known OLD movies from him were actually WAYYYY funnier. He started out by making movies with an average plot and fill it up with many short but explosive skits, but over time, he grew more mature and wanted more cinematography and more developed skits and hence the birth of Kung Fu Hustle, Shaolin Soccer and a few other "new-school" Chow moveis.
32:26 cutest thing i ever heard "turn everything into a dumpling" 😂 another great reaction to a classic! he does great works on his films, puts a lot of heart into them.
This is why in the very beginning of Kung Fu Hustle a ball reaches Stephen Chow’s feet, he pops it, the kids playing with it cry and he says “no more soccer!” Also Zhao Wei who plays Mui, his love interest here, is awesome. Always plays action women.
The reason why Stephen Chow plays characters called Sing is because his real name is Zhou Xing Chi in Mandarin Chinese (Xing is analogous to Sing). A lot of his works had him playing a character who has the Chinese character for Sing in their names in one way or another as a bit of an inside joke / tradition
22:57 The tongue is a Michael Jordan reference. At least that's my opinion. It was iconic when Michael would dunk from the free throw with his tongue out.
I just noticed your eyes have similar shape to Vicky Zhao (The Goalkeeper). She has eyes like giant marbles. 🤣 Also she got famous for My Fair Princess. By far the best drama ever made imho.
The goal keeper is imitating Bruce Lee in the movie Game of Death where even Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Los Angeles Lakers basketball player, had a role. Lee's most famous role is in Enter the Dragon about a tournament that might lead to death.
Steven Chow does play characters named "Sing" a lot. In some of his older films, he even appears alongside some of his other characters or characters from his other films. This would indicate that many of his films take place in the same universe. It's a bit similar to how Jackie Chan often plays characters named "Jackie" in his older films. You might want to look up "All for the Winner", if you'd like to see an older film, where he plays a character named Sing.
Shaolin Soccer introduced me to Stephen Chow's work and of course I thought Kung Fu Hustle was amazing...but probably the most interesting of his produced works is "Journey to the West: Conquering The Demons". Although Chow doesn't star in it himself, the cartoonish goofiness mixed with an underlying emotional core peculiar to his movies is readily apparent. I think it's worth giving it a look if your interested in exploring his work beyond the gimmick of applying martial arts to unusual contexts that garnered his work attention in the Western market.
Actually if you've watched Stephen Chow and Jackie Chan's movies, you can try some of their other popular titles too. For example, Stephen Chow also acted in "God of Gambles" and "Back to School" series are both pretty fun to watch. Jackie Chan's early titles such as "City Hunter" and "Who Am I" were action packed too.
hoping we're getting closer to mean machine. also, you can never go wrong with a stephen chow movie. there's a dozen on netflix (us) and they're all gold.
That one uses excerpts from a Jimmy Wang Yu kung fu film called Tiger and Crane Fists. They kinda parodied the dubbing and mocked the outlandish characters and animal-based martial arts. But it's a good old school kung fu film tho.
Chinese New Year this month, try more Stephen Chow movies like God of Cookery if you can find it or just go for some Jackie Chan Homg Kong movies like the 2004 New Police Story or Drunken Master 2. Great movies to react to for the festive month.
i love this movie. i think the hong kong version (don't know if available anymore) isn't as wacky as this one and is a better balance of crazy and entertaining. this one goes a bit off the rails with it but still so much fun. welcome to the zany world of Stephen Chow
A brilliant film directed by Stephen Chow, featuring his comedy but not his performance, is "Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons", starring Shu Qi, who stars alongside Zhao Wei (Mui) and Karen Mok (one of the Soccer Sisters) in the very stylish "So Close", a kind of Hong Kong Charlie's Angels with incredible martial arts choreography and some of the most over the top melodrama ever.
You should also check out some of Jackie Chan’s stuff. Not as much of a comedy as this movie, but definitely have their own humor. I’d suggest “Operation Condor” but “Rumble In The Bronx” would probably be the more popular choice.
Sing is either his real life name or nickname. His character is named Sing in a lot of his movies. The women in his films often become famous and are collectively called the Sing Girls.
Stephen Chow's Chinese name is Sing Chi - (Star Run if translate the meaning directly). In a lot of his work, he used Sing as name of the character he played.
Lola looks so comfy, and maybe it's the camera angle but she also looks gigantic! I love both Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hussle, Steven Chow has a great sense of humor and story telling. But like you, I was introduced to Hussle first and found Soccer later on so I have a slight bias there. Plus I think you're absolutely right and Kung Fu Hussle was just a better story and comedy.
I prefer Stephen Chow's earlier HK work more than his later 2000s work (except Kung Fun hustle which is my all time favorite). Check out some of his 90s movie, he plays sing in all of them!
26:29 Yes, but it's rare. A goalkeeper is same as any other player except they can use their hands to touch the ball as long as they are within the box in front of the goal.
You mentioned about Stephen Chow's characters named as "Sing" in both Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer 34:11 : - - This is because his name in english is "Stephen Chow Sing-chi". "Sing-chi" is his First Name, "Sing" is the first word of his first name. Those who know his name, understood that that he uses half of his first name as his character name.
I think said somewhere else here, but SING (or Xing, depending on how you romanize Chinese names) is Stephen Chow's actual Chinese individual name, which is why that's his character name in so many of his films. =D
Happy new Year 2023 with more Stephen Chow movies réactions though 😀🙏 Beijing from love, King of comedy, cj7, love of delivery....And plus 😊 merci lady Cherry 🥳
Love your reactions. Speaking of which, I would love to hear your thoughts on Jackie Chan's Hong Kong movies, especially POLICE STORY (which he also directed). The 3rd POLICE STORY film is also one of Michelle Yeoh's earliest films.
Mui was what the perfect fit to defeat the Evil Team because the Evil Team players were stronger, but Mui is a Tai Chi master whose principle is to redirect the opponents strength and use it instead of clashing against them.
The English translation at 25:20 did a bit of injustice to what Sing said and made him sound so cruel. He actually said "No. If the shoes get worn off, I will throw them away. We must always look forward to a better future. I don't want to ever wear worn-off shoes again." In the original language, he didn't say "Things have changed. I have to think about the future." Besides this, there are also lots of other mistranslations in the film.
You may not be a big fan of football, but the next FIFA Women’s World Cup which is coming in a few months will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. It’s the first Women’s World Cup hosted by two countries and the first major World Cup happening down under.
Brilliant reaction as always, You should definitely check out more Stephen Chow, they are hilarious, movies, like God of Cookery, Sixty Million Dollar Man and Forbidden City Cop
I loved Kung Fu Hustle. But this movie though.. I have said this before in the internet circle, I'll say it again - Shaolin Soccer is one of the best movies ever made!!!
Recommend Mary to open a channel for Stephen Chow,Almost none of Stephen Chow's films are bad, they are all excellent. Yeah and Chow saying how much they were inspired by him when he's laying there was a tribute to Bruce.
Danny Chan have played as Bruce several times in multiple films including the tv series the legend of Bruce Lee with 50 episodes
Can't believe that's the same guy as the Axe Gang boss LoL.

what does singh mean

i think shaolin soccer is what it would feels like if an anime live action adaptation was done well! haha
There is One Piece and Alita
The bar scene is hilarious. Especially the beer overflowing.
..the egg scene
I loved the fact you're watching the shorter version of the movie in original language, that's the best version for me personally. Loved your reactions!
Yes; I've watched both the English dubbed and the Chinese language version with English subtitles. The latter is much better.
Why? It cuts out a lot of classic footage.
Great observe about the Sing part .It was because Stephen Chow's real name is Chow "Sing" Chi.In Hong Kong we used to call him as Kid Sing and in cantonese Sing means star. That's why in most of his film his character is always also named Sing.It gets unseperable to him.

Great editing. You captured everything from the storyline AND got pretty much every funny or exciting scene.

Also Zhao Wei who plays Mui, his love interest here, is awesome. Always plays action women.
Zhao Wei is a Billionaire in China. Apparently she's gotten in trouble with the CCP.
Zhao Wei also played Mulan and is on one of my favorite action movie, So Close.
The reason why Stephen Chow plays characters called Sing is because his real name is Zhou Xing Chi in Mandarin Chinese (Xing is analogous to Sing). Chow Sing Sing. He's from Hong Kong, speaks Cantonese and is HK through and through.
This movie absolutely broke me. I fell off my seat and started crying of laughter on the floor while gasping for air. I'm not kidding.

This movie is gloriously bonkers. Thanks for sharing your reaction.
Haha the Bruce Lee goalie cracks me up 🤣
bruce lee goalie was the best 😆😅😂🤣
Thank you Mary for watching the original Cantonese version :)
The English Dub does not have the "American drugs" line. The Cantonese version is superior.

Watch "God of Cookery" ...Stephen Chows take on Iron Chef fame
Stephen Chow is a fucking legend and a comedy genius, imo. Love that dude

There's also a movie by Stephen Chow called The Mermaid (2016 film). It's also a comedy/drama/fantasy.
If you're still interested in Stephen Chow, consider God of Cookery as a great stand alone comedy. Or maybe the Saint of Gamble trilogy.
