  • How is 3D printing changing the future of prosthetic and animatronic limbs? Tinkering with this new technology 17-year old inventor Easton LaChappelle is creating robotic limbs with strength and dexterity beyond human, and will create new models for custom prosthetics in the not-so-distant future.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

This guy got all the way to a state science fair before thinking about prosthetics!?
It shows that he was so passionate about the project, he didn't even need a grand goal!
That kind of excitement is beautiful, especially since it was so accepting of the larger goal when he had the eureka moment.

When we were kids, we were neighbors to the LaChapelles in Colorado. My eldest brother was friends with his brother, Cameron. Easton was just an infant. It's amazing to see what he's done with his life.

for goodness sake give this kid proper credits and cut him some slacks.. this is just the beginning of something big.. it's a great start! asking questions like "can it be strong enough?" "can it crush?" "can it responds to emotions?" etcs... the first phone and computer cant even do things the phones and computers do now.. what do you expect out of the first prototype? seriously. *facepalm*

How does the mind control this arm? Building a cheap arm is easy, making your mind control it for cheap is not and this is where all the money currently goes. I wish he would talk more about how it is controlled.

The controller is from a company called Neurosky. Googled, from some site "LaChappelle explained to me that the prosthesis is controlled through a sophisticated system of blinks and thoughts. The Neurosky can measure different levels of concentration, as well as eye blinks."

    • @apocaRUFF

Look up the Emotiv headset. The EEG Headset he shows is about the same technology. The headset can pick up up to ten different "signals" from your brain at a time. It takes practice and training, but you can do some pretty awesome "mind control" type stuff. There's even a handful of games that make use of the tech.
So, essentially, you pick a certain type of "thought" and you program that thought to do a certain thing in the arm (such as extending or contracting a finger).
He's also recently released the technology (designs, programming, etc...) completely free and open source on the internet. If you wanted to, and if you had the parts a 3D Printer, you could make an arm yourself. Or just view the documents and see how it works.

8 years ago at $400 initial cost and they still aren’t offering it to patients at an affordable cost.
This kid was drafted to work for NASA to keep him occupied and collect his ideas before they are widely known.
Cannabis will destroy big pharma after nearly 100 years of suppressing its known value to health care.
The hydro (water powered) car was a real, achievable endeavor but the idea, drawing plans and the man who invented it suddenly disappeared.
Luckily the kid is sooo intelligent that he’s oblivious to what is going on that he gets to work for NASA instead of suddenly and permanently disappearing!
