The cave paintings are incredible, I’ll have to look more into that. Forget Lascaux let’s talk about those central Asian cave paintings of stick figure skiers!
Proud Swede and enthusiast skier here. At school here we read in the history books that the kings of old were skiing around between Norway and Sweden back in the day. Check out Gustav Vasa or Vasaloppet. :). But if you go to Norway the skiing is so deeply integrated in the culture that it’s inseparable.
Thanks for this video. Please post the history of modern roller skiing. Without roller skiing history, the public has no real understanding of the famous line spoken by all XC skiing athletes chasing little trinket medals: "Skiers are made in summer." All of FIS Nordic XC skiing and all of IBU is fueled a full seven months of the year with roller skiing. Skiers without roller skiing are like swimmers without an indoor pool. So significant is roller skiing that both FIS and IBU race roller skiing at the highest levels, minus the Olympics. As the snow disappears, the Olympics will be forced to decide to remove skiing altogether or begin also competing on roller skis. BTW, your exclusion of the birth of FIS and IBU is a massive oversight. Without racing federations for all skiing, the sport would look nothing like it does today in terms of high-performance speed, up, down, across, and jumping. Skiing is skiing, the same as swimming is swimming. Both sports are today very much year-round sports. Swimming has indoor pools, and skiers have roller skis. Here is one of the best in the world skiing. Of course, on wheels. Most of her time is spent skiing on wheels. Let's help educate people to all of what skiing is, please. Scientific facts work best when shared to the widest possible audience. ruclips.net/video/6Ov92oOSe3k/видео.html
You are looking at skiing as an (competitive) sport, not as an (leisure) activity. I believe most people go out to ski simply to ski, it's what they do on vacation or on their weekends. The focus is often not on performance but on experience. For these people your references are irrelevant.
There are three forms of roller skiing. Skate (FreeStyle), Classic and SpikeBoarding. Here is SpikeBoarding skiing explained visually. Like all skiing, SpikeBoarding is pure STEM. What University will research SpikeBoarding skiing first? As your fine little history film shows, skiing used one shaft for 7850 years. Double pole skiing is very modern. SpikeBoarding is ancient Andor skiing made uniquely American and technically modern by way of the SkateBoard Spike invention and the three techniques it gave rise to.
