There are smaller Android devices with WAY more modern OSes, a proper mid-tier performance SoC and a proper LTE modem like the Unihertz Jelly 2/2E/2S series. Would be interesting to see a review / teardown of those since they look like a pain to take apart just from the outside.
Although I've used android since 2.3, I'm trying to remember back to android 6. 2012 and the nexus 7?

Don't know if you know this but, that small pocket in your jeans was meant for a pocket watch. Train Conductors and Engineers wore these type of jeans way back and that is where they would place their pocket watches that were on fobs.
I always thought pocket watches were for inside pockets in jackets
I use it to keep my keys or change instead
I’m glad someone else knew this
@@kiwikemistmight be more practical, but as the guy on the comment said, that was its original intention
Yep, and when pocket watches fell out of favor, it became the change pocket, or lighter pocket for smokers.
The lack of SD card readers in current phones is one if those things people should actually be outraged about but seemingly nobody is.
I am. That's why the majority of my phones are entry level, mid range and older flagships (s9)
Sony phones, altho expensive as fck
That's why nobody with a lick of sense buys those 'high-end' phones, but goes for the mid- and budget range. That's where phones have SD card expansion, headphone jacks, IR blaster and all the other goodies.
@@MayaPosch Nobodoy with a lick of sense buys budget phones which are so underpowered that they are pain to use out of the box just to have a sd card slot when most of high end phones can have up to 2tb of storage lol
@@MayaPoschand those happen to be the ones with ad filled OS and trash quality
There are credit cart sized phones on the market. A teardown video of one of those would be interesting.
I had a credit card phone. Mine screwed up so I took it to bits.
mine only had a 320mah battery but it lasted ages befoore needing to be charged.
It had bluetoothh as well. not a bad little phone until it just stopped working
@@BillyNoMates1974Thats cool thanks for your comment man !
Micro SD card slot
Headphone Jack
These are the most practical and simple points of engaging with technology. A wire always works, and we all know, any amount of on board storage is never enough, and if the phone fails, it takes down all the data with it, unlike the card which is also a storage and backup option that can save the day.
Honestly my guy, the stop motion like effect that phone gives while recording looks rather cool. It's a neat device I'll give them that. Tiny phones are kinda nice. 👀
3:27 That niche market is prison. Something small is easier to smuggle into a prison (use your imagination about how to hide it) and for prisoners to keep hidden.
If you showed me this in the mid 2000s my mind would've been blown. It really is neat tech and I'm glad it exists.
we are not in mid 2000s yet, or ye?
We are in 2023 and honestly my mind is blown on how this phone does well on it's own
@@kakaerikothey mean 2000-2009.
this isnt neat tech what the fuck are you on about
Back in the mid 2000s, any portable device that could browse the web like a computer blew my mind.
Interesting device - there's probably some use case for a small phone with smart capabilities. Too bad it's only Android 6.0 (which is too old to support most stuff now) and also it only supports 3G networking. 3G is being shut down in various countries, and 2G has also been shut down in various countries as well, thereby making 4G a necessity.
I think the usecase is likely to go inside nature's pocket to be snuck into prisons more than anything.
Yep 4G LTE is a bare minimum for a phone these days, and if this phone is not very old, then it has no excuse to not have it, as even KaiOS flip phones have 4G LTE modems.
The oldest version of android 4.4 kitkat with apps still work. There are still apps on the google play store that don't support the newest version of android or even android 11 since some of the apps says there were designed for an older version of android. The app developer never updated the app. Some of the apps that I use are still old and still functional and don't offer anything new. Android was designed to operate on older versions of android as well as newer versions of android. I'm glad that android still supports the older versions android. I sideload apps that are no longer supported on the newer versions of android but they were removed due to copyright reasons. I sideloaded the google play now launcher android 4.4 version with my pixel 4a 5g running android 11 since I never updated the software on myself pixel 4a 5g. I only updated the apps from the google play store on my pixel 4a 5g. I left the software exactly the same when I first bought the pixel 4a 5g when the pixel 4a 5g first came out. The only issues are the display has gotten burn in, the display has gotten dimmer overtime, the battery drains quickly, the standby still last for multiple days even though it drains quickly while I have notifications all running in the background while being connected to my wifi and while using the phone and the phone still charges fast and the 128gb storage is almost completely full. I bought a battery case on amazon for my pixel 4a 5g. LOther than that, my pixel 4a 5g still works the same way when I first bought it. The google now launcher functionality still works even though it was removed from the google play store and no longer supported.
@@OledBurnInKingI'm curious to know what kind of older apps you're running.
@@traviswalker8933 The google now launcher, modded version of youtube to bypass the ads with streaming 4k youtube videos, modded version of the premium spotify with the 320 kbps highest quality to bypass the ads. The modded youtube is called vanced youtube, the only thing that I don't like about the modded version of youtube is that the display brightness is dimmer than using the regular youtube version. I had to login with my google account since the youtube is the micro g version. The vanced version of youtube from the google play store was removed because it was exactly like the regular youtube and offers features that the youtube premium version uses. Google had youtube vanced removed since they found out that it was using the same features as youtube premium for free so people don't have to pay for youtube premium. The micro g is google proprietary software when I googled it that's why it's needed to login with my google account to use vanced youtube.
Im still so pissed that samsung flagships no longer support sd cards. If this phone can fit it, surely samsung can find space
Who cares about Samsung in 2023? Samsung stopped caring about customers in 2014 when they introduced KNOX. Only brain amputated idiots still care about Samsung phones after that.
They needed more space to fill with air so sd card slot wouldnt fit
@@captainheat2314 LOL
It's completely bizarre that Samsung only offers the SD card and headphone jack on its entry level A-series. It's not a matter of having enough space on the phone chassis, they could easily offer those features on the flagships if they wanted to, like on the S10 series. They're just following Apple's degenerate model of upselling storage and accessories to the users who are willing to spend the most money. Sadly all they're doing is denying the flagship users from having the best experience possible for their money.
@@j.p.9522 samsung like apple only cares about investors as thats their #1 concern not customers
Honestly? If a big phone company decides to make such a small phone, it could have a good chip, good edgeless display, a good camera and a somewhat bigger battery.
minus the edgeless display it's already been done with the Unihertz Jelly Star it's got a 3in display a 480x854, 48MP rear/8MP front cameras 4G LTE modem, 8GB RAM, a Mediatek Helio G99, 2000Mah battery, USB C 10 watt charging, 256GB internal storage, dual sim, or sim/MicroSD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, notification lights, all running on Android 13, but it cost 200 greenbacks.

I don't like AMOLED since they burn in after a few years, I have seen many. The backside is only plastic, but I can change the battery easier with that and it doesn't break as easy.

Only seen one comment that hit the nail on the head - this type of phone is snuck into correctional facilities allowing cell phone access otherwise unavailable to inmates.
its so small, but it works kinda well considering the size.
I never cease to be amazed by phone reviews that don't actually mention how a "phone" actually functions as a phone. Does it send and receive text messages well and more importantly what is it like for actually making phone calls. What is the call quality like and does it fare when it comes to dropping calls.
It might come as a shock to others, but I chose a flagship as my first smartphobe solely on the review of its call quality.
This isnt a phone review, its a "Impressions & Teardown" most of us come to this channel just to see the inners of many devices
Most phone reviews don't need that because most phones are perfectly fine in that regard. For cheap phones like this you know what to expect.
"Does it send and receive text messages well"
What, do you think we're living in 2050? Don't go about setting the bar so high.
Same.
>This is a phone, let's test the camera!

I would love to see a resurgence of these kinds of small phones. Variety is much needed in the smartphone space.
Funny i own one of thease, same brand it's called the "soyes 7s" it looks exactly like the iPhone 7 + or 8+ and it actually uses the physical home button!
It's a nice novelty but with a 500mah battery it just doesn't last very long, not to mention all the other issues pointed out in this video.
Even through this really poor camera, you're still looking good.
Sony Xperia X Compact was peak for me. I doubt I'll EVER see a phone that small with features that were nearly flagship when it was released.
zenfone 9/10?
@@pedroferreira4323They're not as small
Actually any sony compact smartphone was cool. XZ2 compact was the best
@pedroferreira4323 Looked it up, it appears to be the only option short of an SE. Still HUGE in comparison, but that's the world I have to accept.
Addition: Holy cow, ZenPhone 10 might be the one. Still nearly 6"... But acceptable.
Galaxy S23 is pretty compact actually
0:14 it's funny, because the iPod Nano 1st gen was shown by Steve Jobs as an iPod that was small enough to fit into that tiny pocket in your jeans. But there's very very few smartphones that can fit into that pocket. Even the iPhone 4s back in the day was too large to fit into that pocket.
You should try the Unihertz Jelly 2 also. With almost the latest hardware in a small package like this.
Yes !
Received my Jelly Star yesterday, it's got all the bells and whistles from any modern Android 13 phone and then some! Such as huge LED's, IR remote control and a 3.5mm jack. (but it didn't cost AU$ 43)
@@marckloos2000just had a look for Jelly star phone $199.99..😮...pass
I don't think the phone being slow will be a problem for the majority of people who use this phone, they have plenty of time on their hands, days, months or even years.
Let's be honest, SD Card expansion limits the sales of higher (512gb or more) built in storage phones
Please do a video on the Unihertz Jelly 2 - fantastic specs for its cost and size... Seems well built too
I have a Palm PVG 100 and I thought this one was going to be a competitor but the smaller battery and 3G connectivity ended that idea. Also the Palm runs Android 8. Of course I'd like it to pop apart with 1 screw and no battery tape.
It's crazy how android 6.0 is 8 years old and people are still using this OS version.
this made me wonder what that pocket is actually for
I believe it was originally added for a pocket watch
For pocket watches.
It’s for a pocket watch.
Coins
Way back when jeans were first made, it was called a Coin Pocket. This was back when people used real money. LOL! I'm 70 yoa. I've been wearing jeans back before girls were allowed to wear pants to school. 🙄 I was in high school before they changed the rules. Those were hard times! 🤣🤣
ngl this is an amazing idea if it was made with more modern hardware, also that usb-c looks hilarious
Hugh, that little pocket in jeans was for a pocket watch
I remember seeing something with same specifications and really similar that looked like a fake iphone 7 plus with a home button that actually worked. Same launcher (except virtual buttons that was a fake assesive touch required to press the back button.
So they are probably using old stock with a new frame to sell more.
You should give it a repairability score!
It's actually quite good with the clipped on main side instead of just glue everywhere. I'd say it ranks quite high on repairability even with the soldered front camera.
love your video by the way
“It’s so small that it fits in that weird tiny pocket in your jeans.” Ah you mean the iPod nano pocket?
That phone is so small, I bet you can smuggle it into prison.
Crazy how things can be so tiny right people (good channel Hugh!)
One possible use case: mp3 / mp4 player with Bluetooth and basic Internet access. I use an old phone for this. For running, listening to podcasts, etc. If you don't want to go out with your main phone or risk it while training.
This would be perfect to use when traveling so your daily driver doesn't get damaged or if it's stolen you can laugh at the thief. 😂
I get why you would call the quality of the cameras poor, but I can't say I'm not astounded at the fact that it can take pictures and video that is somewhat OK
We need more phones like this, that can be on a pocket. The nowadays phones are to big for my like. If it only have better specs, more updated software and easier to open...
Realistically it's too small for a touchscreen. If you want something that small you need to get an old-fashioned phone with numeric keypad. That being said, I do miss my first smartphone with its compact 5" screen. That was big enough to type on, even with my large-ish fingers, yet fit a hand or jeans pocket perfectly.
so an iPhone SE?
@@Gamefreak924No, a smartphone

Imagine using this as your daily driver. Hugh never fails to entertain us. I hope you reply. I’m a big fan
he ain’t gonna reply kid 💀
Its the zoolander phone if it were filmed in 2023
My girlfriend's friend's boyfriend had one of these and he looked moronic using it (because it was his daily driver).
He thought it was sleek and hip. I'd be embarrassed to whip that thing out: "it's not small, it's just really cold in here!"
@@Boogie_the_catI assume you're no longer speaking of the phone 😂
I think you missed 1:26
That android OS takes me back, i'm impressed at the phone being a tiny little thing it's kind of cool.
this phone way smoother and fluid for that price. i never thought it could have 100+ geekbench score. this is way more powerful for it's size #AMAZING
The rear camera is jittery, but the quality is great, I must say! It is miles better than those cheap crappy phones (similar to this, specifically those fake Samsung/iPhone phones) with camera quality that looks like it came from the 90s. Nice video again, Hugh!!! Missing your iPhone/MacBook repair videos!
Even in the mid-2000s phone cameras were often a joke. I seem to remember my Siemens from that era produced pictures that were something like 300x200 pixels, if that. Extracting them required a proprietary cable and software and the pictures were little more than blurry postage stamps. My last dumbphone, a ca.-2015 Nokia, had a VGA camera (640x480 pixels) that produced terribly washed-out pictures. It did have Bluetooth but every single picture had to be transmitted separately. I'm not sure if it was even able to record video but it might have.
What about pressing on the screen and seeing if that makes the home button fire
What’s the full name of the launcher he used? I’m trying to use that same one on my mini phone
So many people seem to not understand the market for those types of phones. It's obviously a prison phone.
That clear case is adorable
Is it capable for data hotspot? Planning to use that as a portable hotspot
That stock android 6 marshmellow giving me nostalgia since my first smartphone had a stock android 6 ui.
I’ve actually seen tiny phones similar to that. They resemble like iPhone 7’s and those phones have a physical button so it might be the same board.
Man you deserve your sucess and i lovw your channel bro keep up🎉🎉🎉🎉
Did you try depressing the home button by pressing down on the display when the phone was assembled? I wonder if the display pushes down like that old blackberry touchscreen phone?
My old galaxy note 9 has that function but I think the design of that cheap phone was inspired on older iPhones (with button) but got removed after to look newer
That home button probably means that it's previous face plate resembled an older iPhone model. Possibly the iphone 4 or 5 in look and they had to change almost nothing else.
Please post the whole manual somewhere, thats just comedy gold based on that small caption.
Couldn't you just flash over the OS to make it more secure?
Smart prison phone. Slightly uncomfortable but I'm sure it'd get in...
If you squeeze it below the screen and near the power jack, does that secret home button work?
Love the dis to Apple with the SD card slot
That spec of dirt on the sensor / lens is throwing me off
Why not though? If they made it more modern with an oled screen that filled the whole area and a decent spec and recent androis os.
no one will buy it, that`s why. it`s junk waste.
Hugh,
I would like to see the smallest fully functional phone
even if it's pricey.
No views? I'm EARLY
I feel like I'm trying to text with a toothpick while wearing oven mitts. And those cameras - maybe they're just shy and only come out for special occasions
Great video! So, is there any "smaller" phone around?
I was looking for this size for summer because when im working in the yard or helping friends or hiking or in the canoe I don't have a lot of room or time to care about the phone,
This will fit in your pocket so you can have a phone if you need it.
Also I hooked the Alfred camera app to my cheap phone and tablet and use them as security cameras when im not using them as a phone or tablet,
Wait you use that key2 that you repaired as your daily driver?
Nice.
Weird pocket was for those old time watches that has chain to pull it out.
The Home Screen kinda reminds me of those Zebra PDT’s used for stockrooms
I think typing on that would be better in landscape mode than portrait, like how it used to be with early small android phones, I used to see a lot of people typing in portrait mode when sub 5" screens were the norm
Need one of these that's actually well made. I can't find one but I'd love to buy it for a friend of mine.
You should try and get the balmuda phone and see what it looks like internally
Remind me of my old Xperia Tipo. Granted, that thing is obsolete now. Hell, it was obsolete back in 2015. But that thing is just so cute. I can't believe I managed to play some online games on that thing.
So cool that someone finally invented something to put into that weird pocket in the Jeans.
are there any Androiid-based phones with old-school "numeric" physical keyboard and decent battery life ?
This is just for calls and to send sms.
You know what phones were originally made for.
It would be nice if micro SD card slots would become obligatory.
I really miss expandable storage.
FYI The video playback might've been stuttery because Firefox doesn't really work that well on Firefox for Android. It can even lag on my Galaxy Note 10.
Lovely teardown !
Or should I say, terror apart !
Very interesting device, considering how thick this is, this should have been a flip phone with querty keyboard
I wonder if the home button would recognize a press through the screen?
we need people to make tiny versions of phones that actually work well
And physical reset switches like this are just old-school
That a good cpu score. For the price you get something that would be very competitive back in 2016
Methinks that unused physical home button came from surplus fake iPhone boards. Since home button iPhones (especially ones that size) are out of fashion these days, it makes more sense to just repackage the board into a small Android phone. Just my 2 cents!
That palm nano thing would be a better buy
I work in a grocery store, and we use these devices for calling the store guard if needed
Doggo reviews are the best! 🐕💜
Hey hugh, i eagerly want to know that is it possible to swap iphone 12 pro logic board into iphone 12 pro max please make a video on that if possible thank you
I'm a cyclist, I was wondering how good this phone for google map navigation? And how long the battery will last during navigation mode...
Can you do a battery drain test with this small phone
Nice!
the Welcome on the start up is actually the "brand". wouldnt be surprised it runs MTK6580.
This phone has the long-boi hybrid (SIM+microSD) tray.
But you can actually get a dedicated triple slot in the same footprint of a dual SIM (side-by-side) tray, but thicker as the microSD goes on the reverse side!
Which still baffles me as to why it isn't more common!🤦🏻♂️
The rear camera seemed pretty neat to me aside it’s low frame rate
The Palm PVG100 is noticeably smaller, and I have one. It's a fun little novelty phone, but too small to be useful.
I remember buying one of these small phones might have been the same size as yours, if not smaller, but I rooted it and put alliance ROM on it, it only cost me $0.99 at Walmart, but it's been quite some time since I purchased it, and I no longer have it.
looks similar size of Nokia Asha 311. I used it back in a days for almost a year.
I have a smaller one but technically it was made to be a watch with a sim and android 9
You get more in that box than most high end phones.
