The Blair Witch made me lose like half my white friends from the nineties cause they loved to go camping and I was like "Did you watch that damn movie?"
Ann Boylen. I hate the woods full stop . I live on the edge of the New Forest and always walked our dogs with my parents there . Heard screaming coming from the woods there when I was about 6 and it scared the living hell out of me . It's a small town and i have never found out or heard what it was . It sounded like someone being murdered. 😱 . Mind you I'm no girly girl and I love horror films .😂
***** OF COURSE NOT!!! She is an excelent actress, her husband is an outstanding director and there is no one better to play Bellatrix Lestrange than Helena Bonham-Carter. The character is scary in its own way and Bellatrix is supposed to be mockery.
Lotharian is right - or almost right. 'Baal' is the same title as 'Beel', and just means 'Lord'. The Baal of the bible is the Canaanite God of the Rains. Baal-Zebub or Beel-Zebub was the 'Lord of the Flies', or the Devil. So they and a few other Gods and demons get mixed up sometimes. Witches could be male, of course, and wizards female...
Oh, come on, guys. The Wicked Witch of the West isn't scary. I mean, maybe back in the 30's, but certainly not now. Iconic, yes. But scary? It's impossible to be scary when half of what you say are legendary movie catchphrases, and when you have one of the most famously silly deaths in film history.
So many witchese you hardly even see through the movie. I would've voted Faruza Balk's character from the Craft for how irrational she can be as a mad teenage witch. Bellatrix LeStrange should have also made it.

Not everyone one of those characters that were listed are witches. The conjuring, she was a witch when she was alive, but she became a demon. Same thing with the Blair Witch. Once you die, you become a spirit of some kind. Maleficient was not a witch, she was an evil fairy (original movie and new one). In the movie "Season of the Witch" there were witches, but the main evil villain, was not a witch. She (Ann) was possessed by a demon. "Drag me to Hell" Mrs. Ganush was not a witch, she was a gypsy. There is a difference between a gypsy and a witch.
Cytron1515 The thing about Nancy is that she wasn't scary until she went insane. She's more of a tragic figure to me, as she was a good person until she lost her mind. She is absolutely worthy of inclusion on this list once she loses it, though. She is terrifying in the latter part of the movie! Incredible performance by Fairuza Balk.
I love her (Mostly Balk's performance)and the film but she' more of a deranged Goth teen that goes Berserk than a witch. Her rival Sarah is the natural witch to me since Nancy's kills are... More due to unexplainable/accidental deaths than murders by means of supernatural powers, i.e: Stepdad's heart attack, Chris falling from a window, the hobo(?). She attempts murder at the end off course, but thanks she fails.
Bathsheba from *The Conjuring* is the most terrifying on the list, because she was a _real_ woman named Bathsheba Sherman who sacrificed her own child, cursed the land before being hanged, and her dark spirit terrorized the farmhouse for centuries.
WHAT ABOUT THE WITCHES FROM THE CRAFT?!?!?!?!? THEY SHOULD'VE MADE THE LIST THEY USED REALISTIC WITCHCRAFT AND THAT MOVIE WAS PRETTY SCARY. COME ON NOW MOJO😡😡😡😤😅
@@spicy_kitty7983 And who was looking for realism with movie witches? You, sir, are a silly goose. Edit: It seems like I might be the silly goose because I didn't read OP's post in full. ... I humbly apologize, Michael, I have brought shame upon my name. 🙈
I believe it came out after this video was made but the witches in "The VVitch" by Robert Eggers are absolutely terrifying in a daunting, minimalist way. Please make another video!!
He's kinda not in it :) (except on TV where the main character is watching Halloween on TV) Halloween 3 followed the original plan for the franchise where each movie was supposed to be a different story centered around Halloween. -SPOILER- . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . So you have this doctor who uncovers a big plot where a toymaker (who is actually a witch/warlock) is trying to ritually sacrifice all his customers (mainly kids).
The witch from Season Of The Witch, also the one from The witch Hunter, Michelle Pfeiffer in Stardust. Also Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parkerin Hocus Pocus (I guess yes they weren't completely scary but they were trying to eat kids). Bellatrix Lestrange, Delores Umbridge and Morgana Le Fey from The Sorcerer's Apprentice just thought I'd add my few :)
Natalie M one of my favorite Screams is Evil Dead and the Tarot Read as a prophet deemed insain by my fellow Priest and like I went to that leavle of trance
This list sucks. Blair witch was stupid and annoying. Malcifent is a Faerie. Hansel and Gretel was a bad movie. So far the only one that is a good pick is Haggis.
SegaCDUniverse but were they technically witches? If anything wouldn't it only be Meg who was the witch? She cursed the bloodline but the rest could be just seen as devil worshippers.
DontBeBored Lee Shang Actually not even in the original story she was a Witch or Fairy. In the original one she was plainly an old woman who profetized the calamity of the princess' fate and wasn't even evil. Later she was turned into a dark/Evil fairy by the Grim Brothers.
EDsavant The ghosts refer to her as a witch and actually, if she's not a witch and plainly sews, then she wouldn't be able to give life to her craftings.
Honestly, nothing beats OG Malificent. That fight scene with the dragon will forever be ingrained in my memory as one of the highlights of my childhood, back when your Prince Charming had to actually earn getting his girl by escaping a den of monsters, hacking your way through a thorn-infested wood, and finally fighting the incarnation of all evil. You don't get Disney movies like that today.
@@phastinemoon Honestly, I'm okay with that. The fairies weren't just eye candy or escort duty, they held their own in combat. Which is all I'd imagine a hero can ask for in magical companions.
A few I would've included were Margaret Morgan from The Lords of Salem, Angelique from Night of Dark Shadows, and Elizabeth Selwyn from City of the Dead (AKA Horror Hotel).
I remember being at my grandparents house when my grandpa or grandma were watching The Witches and I remember getting a bit traumatized but i sorta wanna watch it again
Abby R not only is she criminally underrated but she’s gorgeous too. I always thought that she has a natural ability to play a villainous character. She just has a dangerous look about her. Her performance in Hansel and Gretel was great. You could tell she was having fun in the role.
This list is a joke. What about the Three Mothers Trilogy from Dario Argento? Or 200 other witches scarier than these. You should rename it... “Witches who aren’t scary, but are famous because we didn’t want to work that hard and need more views.”
If anyone has ever seen The Haunting of Morella...you would not understand why it wasn't on the list. That movie creeped me out...a dead witch brought back to life by her skeleton being bathed in blood..yeah that will haunt people
Do you seriously not know that Morgana/Morgaine is part of the legend of King Arthur, which was already told in medieval times and adapted in quite a number of movies before that TV-Show? Despite that fact, I wouldn't have put Morgana into that list because she is not particularly scary as a witch and the magic she displays is not very impressive. She is more scary for being a dangerous schemer and manipulator than for being a witch.
Maleficent's motives make more sense seeing that guest rights and invitations were a much bigger deal for Norse and Gaelic cultures. Maleficent is an Unseelie, basically a "dark faerie", and faeries were, in mythology, always invited to christenings. If Maleficent had been invited, she probably would've given Aurora a gift same as the other faeries- something like making her exceptionally cunning, but still something helpful to Aurora, as Maleficent couldn't harm the child while a guest of the King. By not only not giving her an invitation, but outright TELLING her she wasn't wanted, the King insulted her on a massive level as a faerie, which at least makes her anger more understandable.
Elly Kedward, the Blair Witch... wasn't hanged, she was left tied to a tree and died of exposure (we can assume hyperthermia/dehydration).... This is the story told in The Blair Wicth Project film and books.
Hey WatchMojo, can we get a sequel to this list featuring the ladies of The Craft and the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus? Cause both of them are iconic and they weren't even given honorable mentions while you listed a possessed human instead.

There's no difference except the difference of culture gypsies are witches
Maleficent was not an evil fairy in the original film
Witches be trippin'.
I see what you did there it was pretty obvious
+ckotherletters I got 99 problems but a witch ain't one.
HAIL SATAN!
+The Crimson Loki You Are A Dumb Ass .
The Crimson Loki ..
Not ALL Witches are Satanists
In Fact, Most if Us Aren't!
The grand high witch deserved higher honors. So epic.
What about Sarah Ravencroft from Scooby Doo and The Witch's Ghost. That chick was bad ass
You forgot Nancy from 1996's The Craft.
But she wasn't on the list.
Somethingclever I super agree to that
Cytron1515 yes!!!
Allegedly.
Edit: also - she wasn’t hanged. She died of old age.
Exactly!!!
Yeah Fairuza Balk was great in this!
Mary Van Tassel deserves more than an honorable mention
Mary had a sister who helped in distracting the Hessian before he lost his, you know.
Man, The Conjuring was sooooo good.
I believe it came out after this video was made but the witches in "The VVitch" by Robert Eggers are absolutely terrifying in a daunting, minimalist way. Please make another video!!
The Queen Witch in The Last Witch Hunter was pretty crazy. Also there are 3 really psycho ones in The Lords of Salem.
A Watchmojo video should never be this long
I agree
because sleep is overrated anyway
+Cas Van De Ven Agreed
+Cas Van De Ven indeed
SLEEEP IS FOR THE WEEK!!!!!!!!
+DerangedEmu This is what happen kids if you don't sleep. You can't spell properly.
As of now, it's definitely the witch from the Witch
Conal Cochran from Halloween 3 still trumps her.
Zeitgeist6 Didn't see Halloween 3, although Mike Myers is my favorite out of the Big 3
He's kinda not in it :) (except on TV where the main character is watching Halloween on TV)
Halloween 3 followed the original plan for the franchise where each movie was supposed to be a different story centered around Halloween.

Reeverse's Channel BORING MOVIE ITS IN THE OLD DAYS NO THANKS
Maleficent wasn't a witch!
Yea, she was a evil fairy.
Ketutar Jensen in other words she is a evil witch
Sonia Drummond she is not a witch
I hope y'all not using that insulting Maleficent movie as canon?
The Disney animation version she was a witch. No wings. The remake with Angelina Jolie she was a fairy.
Sorry to what movie are you referring? Sorry I didn't see this reply until now.
This list sucks. Blair witch was stupid and annoying. Malcifent is a Faerie. Hansel and Gretel was a bad movie. So far the only one that is a good pick is Haggis.
And where is Ursalla? She was so evil and awesome
Altho Bette played a witch amazingly I loved her in that role in Hocus Pocus, is wasn't scary,
No Lords of Salem? Those witches were creepy as hell!
SegaCDUniverse but were they technically witches? If anything wouldn't it only be Meg who was the witch? She cursed the bloodline but the rest could be just seen as devil worshippers.
OH HELL YES! i agree 1000% \,,/ ‘-..-‘ \,,/
Sory but you're wrong, Maleficent is a fairy... she's not a witch. You're WRONG... And where's The Other Mother from Coraline?
The new Maleficent isnt a witch but the original was
+Lee Shang she has always been a dark fairy
+Draco Nidhoggson She is out sewing buttons.
How about a top ten horror movie survivors?
the lady from drag me to hell is not a witch she's a gypsy
And Maleficent is a fairy.
A lot of gypsies practiced witchcraft so by default that makes them a witch.
@@archangel5627 Wiccan/Pagan practices and Roma practices are not even remotely the same, lol.
Gypsies were the original witches. Research much.
@@patman0250 No they were not, witches date back thousands of years to Pagan times before gypsies even were in Europe, lol.
Roald Dahl's The Witches was one of my absolute favorite books as a kid ^.^
I would've put the "witch" from Paranorman, I can see kids being scared of her in parts and she has a very sympathetic and tragic backstory.
Dude , you forgot the witches from Salem tv series , most of the witches there are creepy and disturbing as hell.
The witcher 3 crones are scary as fuck. (I know there from a videogame which is why I didn't say they should have been on the list)
There based off a Slavic myth called Babayaga.
+Sam S (ThatsMyTomahawk) Well, don't mean to offend no-one, but Babayaga comes from Russian folklore...
Sorry I'm not an expert on Slavic folklore I'm from America.
+jotabeas22 You basically just repeated what he said.... Russia is part of the Slavic countries....
He wasn't "technically" wrong in what he said.
+Chrisbepimping andgettinmoney THEY WERE SOOO HORRIFIC! DAMN RIGHT THEY NEED TO BE ON SOME LIST SOMEWHERE.
Glad you mentioned Hansel & Grettle. It’s a fun horror pulp movie with unique witches.
Lady Van Tassell should have been in the top ten - she hid her true nature so well. Hey, what about The Craft???? That troup was pretty convincing.
Where is The Evil Queen?
+The101genco
I'm pretty sure she wasn't a real witch, she just acted like one.
She had magic...She was a witch or at least sorceress.
The101genco sorceress
The witches from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Willow, and Snow White and the Huntsman are noteworthy
no mention of Queen Grimhilde ??? aka The Evil Queen from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs she was scary af
Nipun Sharma she was a sorceress
Esmerelda The Griffon aren't sorceress' and witches more or less the same thing
Nipun Sharma true... sorcerer and sorceress are French for witch and wizard, I just found that out....
Ravamna from snow white and the huntsman was scarier tp me
I think the scariest witch from any movie is Jane Doe in Autopsy of Jane Doe
Just saw that movie yesterday, I thought it was terrifying and so well done!
Then bathsheba
Honestly, nothing beats OG Malificent. That fight scene with the dragon will forever be ingrained in my memory as one of the highlights of my childhood, back when your Prince Charming had to actually earn getting his girl by escaping a den of monsters, hacking your way through a thorn-infested wood, and finally fighting the incarnation of all evil. You don't get Disney movies like that today.
He didn’t even do the majority of the fighting - the fairies turn the arrows into flowers, boulders into bubbles, all that.
@@phastinemoon Honestly, I'm okay with that. The fairies weren't just eye candy or escort duty, they held their own in combat. Which is all I'd imagine a hero can ask for in magical companions.
It's always funny when somebody says ''a bunch of teens'' but the actors are like 28 years old lmao
Hollywood...
Meg Mucklebones from the movie Legend.. should have a mention on this list
MrShaun42088 heck yeah I loved that movie
Absolutely!! One of my absolute favorite movies! Yet most of the ppl I know have never heard of it before....pity
A few I would've included were Margaret Morgan from The Lords of Salem, Angelique from Night of Dark Shadows, and Elizabeth Selwyn from City of the Dead (AKA Horror Hotel).
MegaHorror2 Selwyn was diabolically evil!! Great horror movie! Very atmospheric!!
The best "Witch" movie for me was Julian Sands in "Warlock" (1989).
I remember being at my grandparents house when my grandpa or grandma were watching The Witches and I remember getting a bit traumatized but i sorta wanna watch it again
Who else thought bathshiba from conjuring 1 was number 1 ?
Famke Janssen is without a doubt in my mind one of the most underrated actresses and I love her so much (Muriel in Hansel and Gretel)
Abby R not only is she criminally underrated but she’s gorgeous too. I always thought that she has a natural ability to play a villainous character. She just has a dangerous look about her. Her performance in Hansel and Gretel was great. You could tell she was having fun in the role.
Angelina Jolie in maleficent was amazing
"I'm melting, I'm melting. Oh, what a world" those words have haunted me for 20 years.
I was so glad to see Helena Markos make the list, and place #1, no less. Suspiria is a very underrated horror movie.
Where is the Queen/Witch in Snow White?
This list is a joke. What about the Three Mothers Trilogy from Dario Argento? Or 200 other witches scarier than these.
You should rename it...
“Witches who aren’t scary, but are famous because we didn’t want to work that hard and need more views.”
They put Helena Markos at the #1 spot and she was the most hands-on in three out of the murders she committed.
Paul J what witch movies are scarier? I want to know..
What about The Good Witch of the North? All that over use of make-up scared me half to death
If anyone has ever seen The Haunting of Morella...you would not understand why it wasn't on the list. That movie creeped me out...a dead witch brought back to life by her skeleton being bathed in blood..yeah that will haunt people
Love this list. I've seen all these films many, many times over the years.
the Witches from Macbeth - "double double toil and trouble", etc
Does Morgana from Merlin count? If so, I think she should have been added to the list
Nevermind. Merlin is a show not a movie
+Greg Putnam yeah
Do you seriously not know that Morgana/Morgaine is part of the legend of King Arthur, which was already told in medieval times and adapted in quite a number of movies before that TV-Show? Despite that fact, I wouldn't have put Morgana into that list because she is not particularly scary as a witch and the magic she displays is not very impressive. She is more scary for being a dangerous schemer and manipulator than for being a witch.
Pretty good, but no "Witching and Bitching", best horror film in years.
Maleficent’s not really a witch, though. She’s a fairy.
So I don’t think she should be on this list.
The Witches was absolutely terrifying to me as a child. I was so scared after watching that movie. It’s still pretty creepy to watch
How can you not list Meg Mucklebones? I mean her appearance was short but damn if it didn't leave an impact.
They should do a spinoff.
What about Nancy from The Craft? Come on Mojo, you put her 5 seconds by the intro and then not a single comment.
The witch from Spirited Away (for those who watch anime films lol)
Elly Kedward, the Blair Witch... wasn't hanged, she was left tied to a tree and died of exposure (we can assume hyperthermia/dehydration).... This is the story told in The Blair Wicth Project film and books.
I love Pumpkinhead! I really think that witch should've been ranked higher on the list. Even if just for the atmosphere of her cabin alone!
Meg Mucklebones (Legend, 1985)
she was based off jenny greenteeth from british legends.
Malficent , is a very wick fairy, a less does blame Sleepling Beauty for her father's sins.
I thought the old woman in "Drag Me to Hell" was a gypsy. Gypsy witch?! IDK.
+Kristine Lang Yes she was..I think an Hungarian Gypsy)
A good portion of gypsy women have been known to practice witchcraft and black magic so by default that makes them a witch.
Gypsies are a form of which. In fact gypsies are the original which is some say.
I agree the top pick being one of the three mothers however Mother Lachrymarum was by far more scarier.
Hey WatchMojo, can we get a sequel to this list featuring the ladies of The Craft and the Sanderson sisters from Hocus Pocus? Cause both of them are iconic and they weren't even given honorable mentions while you listed a possessed human instead.
Nothing beats ''Drag Me To Hell '' . I'm so disapointed they haven't mde a sequel yet
You missed one witch: Lamia from *Stardust*.

The famous "Wicked Witch of the West"
The scariest looking witch in movies to me is Meg Mucklebones from Legend. I know she's not a witch in the movie but she sure hell fits the profile. Absolutely pure nightmare fuel.
The Wicked Witch of the West ain't even that scary lmao but ooook
All those people saying Maleficent wasn't a witch, just because of that live remake, lol
In the original she was a dark fairy just like the live action remake.
Read the actual faerie tale those movies were based on.
@@tsubakiofmelancholy6297 Not in the original she wasn't
@@waluigitime1780 I read the script of the original Sleeping Beauty that was a cartoon Disney movie and she was a dark fairy not a witch.
@@tsubakiofmelancholy6297 You mean the script they didn't go with? In the final version of the film, she is a witch
The Witch King of Angmar? :D
Tecnically, is not a Witch. Is a Witcher.
Isn't he a wraith?
have you read the Tolkien companion? little more research.
You forgot about Umbridge from Harry Potter
You forgot Julian Sands as Warlock !!
Oh yes! Good call.
