As someone who is critical of the church, I"m often asked where might someone go to learn more about the issues...
To be perfectly honest, FAIRLatterdaysaints and Scripture Plus are two of my first recommendations because its not always the issue which is the biggest problem, but the apologetic answer meant to minimize the issue which helps people take a more healthy and critical view of the church.
For better or worse, the admin allows the critical comments to stay up... so thank you.

@@jaybravo2199OK, but wouldn’t you rather do something else with your time? It’s one thing to be seeking answers to unresolved questions, but entirely another to look for opportunities to criticize the church.
I mean, I don’t spend my disposable time seeking out opportunities to criticize any church or religion. It’s kind of weird plus life is too short.

Where does it say abinidi is old?

    • @malaineeward5249
      @malaineeward5249 Месяц назад

It doesn't, but a lot of art depicting prophets shows them as old, so that theme just kept repeating itself in art.
Similar to how Renesance (sp?) Art has heavily influenced modern depictions of Christ as fair skinned even though His ethnicity was more Middle East/Jewish.

This connection presented in this video is like when the church picks one random scripture out of the Bible and uses it to justify a whole doctrine or religious practice. It's really poor scholarship and shouldn't be taken seriously. Just cuz you found a stone carving in the jungle with a tree on it, doesn't mean Nephi was a real person.
Trend analysis should be the basis for examining all the LDS truth claims. The apologists on this channel are fond of finding one or two examples out of anthropologic history and linking that to a Book of Mormon event or practice attempting to validate Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, etc...
The video published earlier this year about skin blackness is especially deceptive and poorly done in terms of scholarly and academic honesty and how the church leadership has behaved.
Don't take this material seriously except to use it as a reference point for the faulty (and embarrassing) reasoning of LDS apologists.

About 6 months ago I started talking with the mormon missionaries. All in all I met with 5 different ones. They were nice and friendly but they weren't able to answer some questions I had so I started searching RUclips and I found this channel.
I'm surprised the moderators are as hands off as they are. I've learned more from critical comments than I did the channel. In fact most of the stuff I've found in the comments I found it easier to find sources and citations validating what they've said while claims made on the videos were more elusive or impossible to validate.
The reason I'm commenting is because I read an old Louis Lamour book in high school which had someone being killed by a tribe of indians in the way this channel said happened in the book of mormons.
To be honest I think this channel is trying too hard to make connections to reality which don't exist.

I'm curious why you didn't mention this same method of execution being used by Native Americans in frontier America before and up to the time of Joseph Smith... namely the Iroquois, Chickasaw and Shawnee tribes which were in and around the New York area. Two possibilities...
One, ScripturePlus seems to be convinced the BoM lands are in Mesoamerica.
Two, admitting that this same method of torture was infamous in Joseph Smith's time amongst Native Americans around his home might suggest it inspired a fictional retelling in the Book of Mormon.
Again, this channel is drawing incomplete comparisons to cherry pick instances to provide an inflated bit of evidence. One might call it dishonest.

Just saying that the Iroquois and other tribes practiced this, in no way proves that the Book of Mormon is a work of fiction. But you go ahead and stay convinced that the Book of Mormon is a work of fiction. The thing is, even if an angel himself were to come down before you and declare that the Book of Mormon is true, you would deny it. That's how deniers are.

@@joncharlotteschoen Let me mirror this comment right back to you... just because Jasmine of ScripturePlus says ancient societies in Mesoamerica also practiced this method of execution in no way proves the Book of Mormon is fact. But you go ahead and stay convinced that the Book ofMormon is true. The thing is, even if the spirit of Joseph Smith came down before you and declared he made up the Book of Mormon, you would ignore him. That's how people with blind faith are.

It does, but I wouldn’t describe disparaging the religious beliefs of 17M people as very nice either. Besides, do you know just how long people have been taking the same shots at Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon? And have you ever read it or asked God to tell you whether or not it’s true? (P.S. the Chickasaw were from the southern U.S. area & the Shawnee are from the West-Midwest area somewhere I believe.)

@@duane9166 I’ve said nothing of the members… my criticisms are always directed towards the church and apologists with bad and toxic approaches. There is a tactic many members take in which they assume criticisms of the organization and its truth claims are personal… almost like a persecution complex.
Furthermore, if people’s belief in something is to limit criticisms of what they believe in, what then is open for criticism? People believe in all sorts of things worthy of critical review.
Next, if the number of adherents is to lend credibility to divine claims, the church falls pretty low on that scale, even with the bloated 17 million claim. Best estimates of the total of self identified and active members is close to a third of the numbers the church claims.
People have been taking “shots” at Joseph Smith from the beginning… many of those “shots” are valid criticisms based on substantiated and evidentiary observations. Classifying criticisms and evidence based observations as “shots” is a poor attempt to be dismissive of things without actually addressing the things themselves.
Finally, all of the tribes I mentioned, and a few more I didn’t mention, were all close to Joseph Smiths home and time. Certainly much closer than ancient out of place societies which bear precious little semblance to the Book of Mormon narratives.
