    I can't believe that so many Americans don't know about rugby but their national team goes to the rugby world cup and their 7's team is one of the best in the world

    It's just the position he plays. There's a few different names for the position but a fly-half (sometimes called an out-half) is number 10. He is one of the most crucial players on the pitch, basically the rugby equivalent of a quarterback. The fly-half is the usually the first receiver in a given passage of play, so he is the one who has call the shots and guide his team around the pitch. He decides when to pass the ball and obviously who to, when to strategically kick and will call any strike moves (set-plays, pre-rehearsed moves). More often than not they are always responsible for kicking penalties and conversions too. Obviously rugby is more fluid than NFL, so maybe an NBA point guard is a better american comparison.

    The rule in the tackle is that you must let the ball go immediately if any part of your knee is on the ground AND the defender still has a hold of you. If the defender does not have a hold of you, you may get back up and resume playing.
    When you are compelled to release the ball, you are allowed to pass it to a team mate off the ground...provided you're not obstructing the "play the ball"...in other words you are not interfering with the defenders right to get the ball back for their team.

    In New Zealand we don't call his position Fly Half it is known as 1st five eight. The best player New Zealand had in that position was Daniel Cater which who was on the field when Beauden Barrett was wear number 22 when in the black jersey.

      There is a joke Here in New Zealand about why we call them 1st five eight. The joke is that we call them 1st five eight because we want to sound "smarter" than the rest of the world. Baaah baaah

  • @matthewedgeworth4509
    @matthewedgeworth4509 4 года назад +4

    Yeah so the rule in rugby is that when you're tackled you have to release the ball, usually this means you let go and then a ruck forms to secure it. But technically yes, you can also pass it off the ground if you do it instantly before a ruck forms.

  • @docgonzales

    I played 10, its an important position because you are the first link in chain passing the ball in attack, therefore you decision making has to be spot on, run, kick or pass, most other positions dont get time to make that option.

    "Triple option play" that's what rugby is meant to be about but so many teams now are trained to play by a format rather than read the game in front of them and choose the best option. The trick is your teammates knowing what you are going to do but the opposition not knowing.

    Number 10 is fly half it is like the equivalent to the quarterback. The playmaker. But he also was wearing 22 which is a reserve jersey because in that particular game he was a reserve.

    Numbers in rugby union are positional: the fly half(aka first five-eighth in NZ) is always number 10. And when he was wearing 22, he came off the bench to replace the other No. 10. All flyhalves have the kick, pass, run “option” on every time they receive the ball!

  • @chiara71
    @chiara71 4 года назад +1

    A fly-half is the main playmaker in the team: in particular, he launches the moves of the most agile and fast players that are called ‘backs’ and that are the ones with the numbers from 9 to 15. As a 10, the fly-half is a back himself. By the way, players from 16 to 23 are subs from the bench.
    When the ball carrier is tackled, he can either try to present the ball on the ground for his teammates and in that case they want to protect him and the ball from the opponent want to be stealers (situation called breakdown, where also a ruck can occur), or he can try to offload the ball to an intervening teammate, move that, although risky and difficult to execute, can greatly accelerate and deepen the attack .

  • @msee383
    @msee383 4 года назад

    Role of the fly half in rugby
    A fly-half is crucial to a team's game plan; they possess leadership and order the back line. They are usually the first to receive the ball from the scrum-half following a breakdown, line-out or scrum and need to be decisive with what actions to take and be effective at communicating with the outside backs.

    Flyhalf (or five eight as they're called in Australia and New Zealand) is kind of like a point guard. A playmaker and a guy who has great vision, passing, kicking etc. Someone with lots of skill who directs the team's play.

    Any team would kill to have Barrett. He is pure magic. He is versatile, he doesn’t only play in the number 10 position. This video doesn’t show how good he is defensively too, his tackling is excellent. His weakest attribute is his placekicking (penalties and conversions).

    In response to your questions about whether you can pass the ball when you're on the ground or not... You are allowed to unless the ruck (dogpile) has formed. The ruck has officially formed when two or more players from each team have arrived at the tackle, including the player who was tackled and the tackler. Also, the numbers on the players' backs refer to their positions. Unlike in Football and American Football where the numbers are just what the players want.

    Barrett is not the world's best fly half (basically rugby's version of the quarterback), he's the best rugby player who plays fly half. His skills as a 10 are good but not the best, but he's good enough at them that the fact that he's ridiculously quick and has a really cool bag of tricks makes him very good. But specifically as a fly half, he's a great but flawed player

  • @alexwerthza

    Hey buddy.. loving the reactions.. about passing/pitching the ball from the ground when tackled.. thats fine because the ruck hadnt been formed yet.. the defence want to pile over to prevent that from happening and force the ball carrier to release the ball.
    A good rugby player who knows the rules.. when he has no offence supporting him, once tackled, if skilled enough, can quickly place the ball on the ground, *releasing the ball, then needs to get up on their feet as quickly as possibly to be able to pick up the ball and start a new phase (run)

  • @ric5403
    @ric5403 3 года назад

    Flyhalf is similar to quarterback...aka first five
    The starting or run on team in any Rugby game whether it be juniors all the way up to the pros men or women is numbered 1 - 15 and reserves or backup players which is 8 of them are numbered 16-23 with each number representing each position they play on the field.
    Beauden Barrett usually plays first five/fly half which is a position that is number 10. He plays mainly fullback now which is number 15 because the New Zealand All Blacks has another player playing first five/fly-half for now.
    You see him with number 22 which indicates that he was a reserve player for that game.
    About passing while being tackled and yes you can do this as long as it's all in motion. The tackler must allow you (player with the ball) time to set the ball, you either place the ball back for his team or release like passing during the tackle process. It's all very quick tho
    Ok Hope's that helps. Obviously it's a brief rundown of the game but you should hopefully have a bit more understanding of it now
    Cheers

  • @josephvanwyk2088
    @josephvanwyk2088 4 года назад

    Very simple, scrum half - the bloke controlling the game (responsible for getting the ball out of rugs and insert them into scrum). The faster the scrum half, the faster the game, slow Scum halfs also brings a different required pace.
    The fly half is the guy at the back with the kicking boot. Penalty scorer. Kicks the ball over the pole for 2 points after a try (3 points for penalty). Also the leader of the back players. Fly halfs would often face off at one another, either via penalty score or their ability to keep ball in game or kick it out to gain territory (especially 5m from try line).
    In conclusion you have two different game styles: Kickingball vs Runningball or a combo of the two.

    It's a good point that you make about it being like a triple option play, one of Barrett's main strengths as a 10 is his blazing speed. He's far faster than you normally see at that position, normally you have guys who just have the best IQ, ability to read the play and obviously excellent passing abilities but who are usually not the best athletes. Barrett is a good playmaker too, but as you can see he can also just take off. Kind of like a dual threat QB in american football terms.

    You can only pass the ball from the ground IMMEDIATELY after being tackled, otherwie you must release the ball after being tackled. Jersey numbers in rugby represent the players position, 1-15 is the starting line up, 16-22 are the substitutes.

    Any number above 16 inclusive is worn by someone who started the match on the substitute bench. In Rugby Union jersey numbers are assigned to the player's position, not to a specific person. So the idea that a jersey number could be "retired" is not possible. Also the jersey number = player position is universal so a team (ANY team) can not decide to number its fullback as number 1 down to 15 as the hooker.

  • @lastpenny849
    @lastpenny849 4 года назад

    Like you realised while watching the Video he wears the 10 shirt. (the 22 is for when he comes on as a substitute). The 10 is usually the first player to receive the ball from the halfback after a scrum or ruck (pronounced like muck or suck). He is often the placekicker for a team as well as the field general. He calls the plays for the backline and decides whether to kick or pass in most cases. He is not always the best athlete as his primary role has often been the placekicker. Dan Carter changed that. Carter will always be considered the G.O.A.T by Kiwis because he could do it all, at an extremely high level. Carter has 29 tries for the All Blacks from the 1st five or 2nd five position, which is just amazing when you consider Jonny Wilkinson has 9 for the English from the same position. Barrett is exciting and fast, but he ain't no Dan Carter.

When you see him in the 10th Jersey that means he started the game when he was in the 22 Jersey most likely he came on second half of the game or any other time the coach wanted him too. It's not like basketball the players owns their numbers😂😂
