They have 16 bespoke A350-900 airframes which ONLY serve domestic routes, carrying on a fine tradition of widebodies serving high demand domestic sectors in Japan. But what's it like to fly on?
As a tour guide in Japan, the way they board airplanes is a thing of magic. They board from the window in (imagine that: a logical boarding process) and you get to your seat really quickly. In addition, checked bags are still free on JAL in most cases, so people aren't fighting for the overhead bins. On that note: manners dictate that people NEVER stand in the aisles for minutes on end; it's considered rude. I don't know if we could ever convince people to do that in the USA...
Paul, The New Haneda ANA Terminal Two lounge is world class. The best lounge though is the JAL First lounge at Narita. Total Zen. A la carte sushi bar. Simply industry leading. No middle Eastern airline strip club feel, just Japanese Class.
When I was a kid (1987, BTW) I owned a 1983 Plymouth Sapporo Technica. The Technica package included technology like digital dash and spoken alarms ("Your door is ajar" -- "No it's not, it's a door!!!") It also had a silver paint job, with black on the roof and hood and red pinstriping, with black interior with grey and red highlights. It was on the same platform as the Dodge Challenger of the time, which was based on the same platform as a Mitsubishi Galant Lambda. It was a fun vehicle. That's all... hearing "Sapporo" made me remember that, and I thought I would pass it along.
Living and working in Asia for 20 years flown into Chitose domestically and Internationally 85 times and love the experience and people who work there. NH and Jl both excellent and you can fly JL SYD TO TKYO CTS W For 2200 aud and get better service than QF J for 8k aud
I've been lucky enough to fly both JAL and ANA a few times, they seem to trade off on which one is better, either way they are never really bad (though watching San Spotters review of ANA W had me shaking my head). Japanese food is, well for my Anglo American tastes, a little out there, what I explained to my hosts was, "put it in front of me, I will try it, if I like it never tell me what it is, if I don't like it I will swallow the little piece I eat, smile at the chef and not eat anymore of it.
😂 Hahaha! Thank you saying the name of the airline in a new way. I, as a former USA airline employee has always said J.A.L. in initials terms. Hmm!! The same for A.N. A.😊 Hahaha!! Many of us flyers love flying and some of us are getting old and have older memories of all of these great airlines.😊 Well, again, thank you for sharing this new pronunciation for me!!!
Furthermore, you lucked out very well with no one in the seat next to you. Hahaha, yes, I have had Japanese Food here in the USA in many cities. New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and here in Chicago!! I do like it but I like Chinese Food first. And a cool great friend of mine taught me how to eat with chopsticks back in the 1980s when I was in college.😊
6:55 Not sure if it's JAL's boarding process, or the Japanese culture for being orderly. I flew on JAL earlier this year and it took 20 minutes to complete boarding a 777-300 at ORD. In contrast, on the return leg connecting to an AA A321 out of LAX, boarding took close to 50 minutes. JAL has boarding down to a science!
It's the boarding process. No BS, window to aisle, and free check in luggage menaing less fights over bin space. And the check in luggage is extremely fast. I once spent less than 30 minutes from touchdown to outside the terminal at KIX. On an international flight.
Further to the above, watching your video has given me the urge to book a J class flight on JAL's 763 from ITM to HND tomorrow, after a spotting trip with my Japanese friend there.
That dinner looked delicious. 90 minute flight, so basically a restaurant in the air lol. I do hope you try some overnight ferries, one with a food buffet.
I also love Japanese food. We flew JAL from LA to Tokyo and back in first class in a 747 a long time ago (1989), Toured the country by Shenkanzen. Pardon the spelling. I made one exception to the in-flight Japanese menu. Russian Caviar with real fresh toast points and chopped egg as well as Dom Perignon champagne. Only time we had ever seen that in first class. Haven't seen it since either. Yum!
That first class ticket is basically the same price as Gran Class on the Hayabusa Shinkansen up to Hakodate, JAL clearly knows their competition on this route. If I remember correctly, JAL also has the world's best economy seat on their long haul flights, and is the only carrier in the world that still runs 8 abreast on their 787.
You visited the domestic terminal at Sapporo and you didn't show the chocolate factory or cinema? Doing the world's maddest airport a bit of a disservice there.
What an awesome video! I am looking forward to exploring Japan in future trips. I've stopped over several times, but haven't made it past the airport. Great airport though. Thanks again for great content! Looking forward to more Japan adventures. Cheers!
I enjoy seeing your reviews but I've noticed that you primarily review business class. Many of us can't afford this typeof luxury. But still I do love your videos.
Excellent and informative video as always! I think you should try a Junmai Shu type sake, with a 60% polish grade. They usually are much dryer in taste. (think Chablis compared to a Sauvignon Blanc). It really is a great palate cleanser between pieces when eating sushi.
Hello Paul, wondering if you are or are planning to do a video on Avianca Colombia. I am getting mixed reviews on them, thank you and congrats. Your videos are great and been a fan of the channel for a very long time now.
Japanese food is an acquired taste yet once you develop a knack for it, you'll get more and more into it and will start finding your local delivery options to be totally dissapointing.
That was a bit of a hard touch down 😅. But seems like a great product for a domestic flight. Will definitely have to try this out if flying within Japan 🇯🇵
I flew JAL around 1994. Jumbo jet from London/Narita/Sydney. We could smoke all of the way and drink all of the way. I got to Sydney in a bad shape. I remember the food was Perch and cold noodles, Not good.
There’s a dark fact about JAL and one of these domestic routes that I won’t mention here but that information is widely available if you know where to look.
I find JAL, bizarrely like most One World airlines, to be a bit harsh/business like / rough around the edges. The bright and warm colours of ANA paired to their more modern seats…eh, I’m ANA all the way.
Hi Paul. Was your sake served warm? I understand that though traditionally it was always served warm but nowadays it is served chilled or at room temperature. I've only had it warm, and it was okay. It reminded me of a sherry, which I don't prefer. Maybe you would tolerate the taste more if you drink it warm. 🤔
Excellent review Paul! I visited Sapporo myself this August and fell in love with the place, Chitose Airport is so modern & beautiful for such a relatively remote place, I can't wait to go back!
Japanese food is an acquired taste but I've come to like it. I haven't flown JAL in years and mainly domestic I hope to fly them again soon. Another great video Paul
That's funny about the bidet. I was surprised to see one on ZIPAIR and am surprised it wasn't provided on this aircraft. What was that white thing a woman grabbed at the gate? A cover for the seat?
Haven’t flown on JAL but did go in their lounge in Frankfurt few weeks back. Found it really really disappointing. Hope the airline itself isn’t like it.

What was the aircraft registration?
JAL has the best long haul economy I've been on in recent years. 8 across on 787's and 9 across on 777's. It's fantastic.
As a tour guide in Japan, the way they board airplanes is a thing of magic. They board from the window in (imagine that: a logical boarding process) and you get to your seat really quickly. I’ve loved visiting Japan, it’s such an incredible place. The food is always good and really fresh, not much to beat it.
You’re so happy in Japan! Good for you!
So nice to see Chitose Airport. Hope to make it one day!
Me too! It looks INCREDIBLE!
Paul, The New Haneda ANA Terminal Two lounge is world class. The best lounge though is the JAL First lounge at Narita. Total Zen. A la carte sushi bar. Simply industry leading. No middle Eastern airline strip club feel, just Japanese Class.
That automatic beer 🍺 and towel dispenser is a must for me
I Love The Beer Tapping Machine In The Lounge.Great Trip Report
To me, one of the best airlines in the world staff is so polite and friendly
Yes, Christmas is coming 🎄🎅
Must be getting near Christmas Paul 💰💰 two videos in one week 😂
We’re flying the same route in F in reverse next February, can’t wait!
I hope you have a great time!

Lovely that there is always someone who is waving in Japan, when you leave on a plane, a train or a boat.
Thanks, Paul, allows me to travel vicariously on a trip I would never take. Excellent content and production.
Living and working in Asia for 20 years flown into Chitose domestically and Internationally 85 times and love the experience and people who work there.

Great video ❤
I wish other airlines would board their planes like all Japanese airlines!!! So much more efficient boarding by seat letters than numbers.
Glad you're willing to eat Japanese food for the review. I notice a lot of western travel v/bloggers don't even attempt it
They’re missing out in my opinion!
The fare difference on TYO TO CTS from J to F is round 180 aud but you get lounges, solid service and status tier credits on OW
Thank you for sharing your trip.😊😊

Just want to say thanks - for the possibility i can follow you on places and routes i'll never see in real life.
Good video, 😊
Thanx so much Paul for another great trip report.!!
1 vote for the beer machine 😮
awesome! looking forward to more japan content!
try the busiest route, mate.. it’s in my part of the world..

Have you tried hot sake? I find it a completely different (and pleasant) experience to cold sake.
Thank you for the very nice video!
Thanks Mate
Wow. Sapporo is my hometown. Welcome!
J.A.L not jal
I've never heard anyone in the English language call Japan Airlines jal. It's always been J.A.L or Japan Airlines.
Great flight. More widebody for domestic high density route is great.
I'm here in Tokyo and can confirm that Sapporo beer is excellent. Much better than some beers back home in Europe in my opinion.
Further to the above, watching your video has given me the urge to book a J class flight on JAL's 763 from ITM to HND tomorrow, after a spotting trip with my Japanese friend there.
Thank you for sharing this 😊 NICE experience 😊
Amazing flight experience.
Love Japanese food. When I was there earlier this year, I tried to eat some different Japanese food every evening.
I flew a similar trip in April - Fukuoka to HND. Do enjoy the JAL A350, but the capacity was literally 100%!
That dinner looked delicious. 90 minute flight, so basically a restaurant in the air lol. I do hope you try some overnight ferries, one with a food buffet.
That's the Japanese effency. Even if the plane is late there is time to board and do the other tings for on time departure.
That "no individual air vents" comment came home to roost on a 10 hour leg from Syd to Honolulu with Hawaiian. Very hot and stuffy.
I love Japanese food and cook Japanese style dishes at home. JAL always had good food!
Merry Christmas 🎄
Thank you Paul!
Welcome to Japan 😊
You visited the domestic terminal at Sapporo and you didn't show the chocolate factory or cinema?
Doing the world's maddest airport a bit of a disservice there.
I would argue SIN is the worlds maddest airport, but hey, they are both better than LHR.
LHR terminals 3 & 4 such. I like 2 & 5....... As long as you're not changing flights. Then Heathrow is a real pain.
This is an outstanding video 👍🏻👍🏻. Many interesting points.
My cousins used to live in HK and then moved to Tokyo. They always said JAL was far better than Cathay. Thanks for the video Paul.
Paul, it's certainly worth learning chopsticks - you can do it!
I love window seats!!
What an awesome video! I am looking forward to exploring Japan in future trips. I've stopped over several times, but haven't made it past the airport. Great airport though. Thanks again for great content! Looking forward to more Japan adventures. Cheers!
Great stuff, Paul. So the price of that excellent flight is about the same as a train from London to Manchester!
I Love The Japan Cuisine
I enjoy seeing your reviews but I've noticed that you primarily review business class. Many of us can't afford this typeof luxury. But still I do love your videos.
JAL use to have 747-400D (domestic) they flew on domestic routes 550+ paxs.
Excellent and informative video as always! I think you should try a Junmai Shu type sake, with a 60% polish grade. They usually are much dryer in taste. (think Chablis compared to a Sauvignon Blanc). It really is a great palate cleanser between pieces when eating sushi.
See that boarding time, take note US passengers. Take pride in boarding with a calm and efficient demeanor
Keep up the good work
Great as always!!

I quite agree!
That was a bit of a hard touch down 😅. But seems like a great product for a domestic flight. Will definitely have to try this out if flying within Japan 🇯🇵
Food looks damn tasty!
I am on end of March on Sri Lankan in Business, AUH to CGK, and I am already looking forward to a few good curries !
Nice video 👋
Hi Paul
JAL A350 COLLIDED AT HANEDA AIRPORT AT JAN 2 2024
Yes 😢
This isn't the exact one that crashed, though. Looks like the Dash 8 is to blame.
Same domestic version of A350, same route as well.
I love me food but I could eat Japanese every day for the rest of me life.
I flew JAL around 1994. Jumbo jet from London/Narita/Sydney. We could smoke all of the way and drink all of the way. I got to Sydney in a bad shape. I remember the food was Perch and cold noodles, Not good.
10:02 "the difficulty of using chopsticks" bruh can't even hold a spoon right.
There’s a dark fact about JAL and one of these domestic routes that I won’t mention here but that information is widely available if you know where to look.
What happens if the passenger doesn't have a cellphone that is connected to the internet? How do you get a boarding pass without a phone?
I love Japanese food, and that looked amazing. Are you serious, $260 for that First Class seat? Sign me up! Great video Paul❤️✈️
i was looking on their site, you can get as low as$80 on this route!
I find JAL, bizarrely like most One World airlines, to be a bit harsh/business like / rough around the edges. The bright and warm colours of ANA paired to their more modern seats…eh, I’m ANA all the way.
In all my years of flying to Japan on JAL or ANA, I’ve never heard it pronounced any other way than J A L, by westerners
The "Jowel" sound hurt my ears. Definitely letter by letter...JAY A EL.
You can find a lot of old JAL ads that mentioned the airline's acronym as Jal rather than J.A.L
I decided to use the pronunciation used by the crew on board in their English language announcements. Twice “jal”, never initialised.
N
.. what's the deal.!! Good job Paul 😊
@@paulineparsons9399I think he was making a point that he hasn't heard of it, is that a problem
Hi Paul. Was your sake served warm? I understand that though traditionally it was always served warm but nowadays it is served chilled or at room temperature. I've only had it warm, and it was okay. It reminded me of a sherry, which I don't prefer. Maybe you would tolerate the taste more if you drink it warm. 🤔
I like some Japanese food and am hoping to travel to Japan in 2026 flying business class with points to try the real thing
Nice
Isn't this the flight that crashed on Jan 2 2024? Or at least the same plane and route?
It is the same aircraft type and route. Not the same aircraft or the same flight number.
@@Paul_Lucas JA13XJ is the one that sadly perished.
that is the A350 that had the crash during landing 2 days ago! Coming from Sapporo to Haneda (january 2nd 2024)
It is not the exact same aircraft, just the same type.
Does anyone know if the citi executive american airlines card can be used for lounge access at JAL lounges if you have economy class ticket?
Japanese domestic air travel is superior
60 TIER POINTS?!
Excellent review Paul! I visited Sapporo myself this August and fell in love with the place, Chitose Airport is so modern & beautiful for such a relatively remote place, I can't wait to go back!

That's funny about the bidet. I was surprised to see one on ZIPAIR and am surprised it wasn't provided on this aircraft. What was that white thing a woman grabbed at the gate? A cover for the seat?
It says its a bag for putting your handheld items in (for if you don't want to put it straight on the floor)
Hi wingin it paul lucas can you fly Hahn Air Düseeldorf to Luxembourg And Air Baltic Munich to riga what is the music name
Japanese cuisine is often a bit too crazy for me. But I still love trying. When it comes to Asia, I like Chinese and Southeast Asian cuisine the most.
❤❤❤
what's the purpose of the paper @5:45
Was thinking the same - wondering if it’s a liner to put in the overhead before putting bags in there?
Haven’t flown on JAL but did go in their lounge in Frankfurt few weeks back. Found it really really disappointing. Hope the airline itself isn’t like it.
Japanese food is still better than nothing 😂... I guess
It's Ja-Loo, not JAL~
JAL is pronounced as Jaru in japanese
My name is Pooru Rukasu in Kanji 😂
