In 1969 who would have thought Hawkwind would still be around in 2023 ? You`d have to be smokin something really good. And putting out some of their best stuff !!! Makes it even more amazing. It`s like they`re living one of their Sci -fi epics.
This album was a revelation. No band that's been going since 1969 as a right to sound this good...although obviously Dave Brock (who taught Eric Clapton how to play guitar, incidentally!) is the only original member. Having said that, it's truly wondrous that at 84 years old he can still be this creative, and infuse the rest of the band with his vision. This album is indeed the best one in many a long year, and the current lineup is obviously the best in a long time. Thighpaulsandra has really contributed such a lot to the sound of this record... the keyboards are amazing. This album is indeed reminiscent of '70s Hawkwind, particularly the "Quark" era, but at the same time leans towards new directions for the band. I love this album and cannot wait for the next one, which, once the new lineup has worked together for a while, has a good chance of being even better.... And in February I celebrated 50 years since my first Hawkwind concert. I never would have guessed that they would still be with us, making fantastic music, in 2023. Life is amazing sometimes. Thanks for a great review... I fully agree with everything you said.=
Thanks Pete, great review. I will give it a spin. Been an ongoing fan since mid 70s, love most of their albums, particularly in that era. Am very keen to hear the production, which is not always their strength. Rock on Dave and the boys as we launch the mother ship Hawkwind.
I think this is the best album review I’ve ever watched on this channel. Your enthusiasm is infectious, and I’m going to buy the album. Great job, Pete - thank you!
Good Review. For me their best album since the 1970s. The variable music, trademark Hawkwind spacey sounds, jazz infections, sequenced tracks running seamlessly into each other, make the album a great listen. I was pleasantly surprised the band are still reinventing themselves and producing such a good album in the advanced stage 7 decades into their career. And salute Dave Brock, 81 and still steering the good ship Hawkwind into outer space!
I know of Thighpaulsandra from Julia Cope's band. He played synths for him, 1994-2001, and it makes complete sense to me he would play with Hawkwind. Absolutely love the album. Great review, Pete!
I agree with Richard W. After the dullish Somnia album my expectations were low for this release. Well what a monumental surprise. Having been a fan since 1976 (god i feel old) i am thinking this may reside in the top 6 studio albums of this amazing band's career. How Brock can be this inspired after so many years (and at 81) is amazing. For those who left the spaceship Skylark may i suggest investigating this wonderful album. Spot on review Pete.
Huge Hawkwind fan here. Bought the single Silver Machine in 1972 and Space Ritual in 1973 and saw them live many times. Haven't bought one of their albums since Levitation. Pete, your enthusiasm for this album will push me to purchase it.
You touched on a main point for me around 8:27 when you said how they spaced everything out. Too often their music is too dense, this album gave the music the production it needs. You can hear the individual instruments.
Their best album this century in my opinion. Been kind of disappointed with the last few, the production of them has been muddy, but this has a glossy sheen on it, it sounds so much clearer. I saw them live last month (Manchester UK) and the album came out on the day of the gig here, think they played a couple of songs off it, but the set list was all their 70s songs, starting off with Levitation (1980) then songs from The Mountain Grill and Warrior albums, plus 'Spirit Of The Age' and 'Right To Decide' finishing off with Brainstorm and Born To Go! They had a full on laser light show too which was awesome as well as a screen at the back with projections on it. Was great to see them live again.
Wow what an album. Must admit apart from road hawks many years ago I don’t own anything else. But it’s one of those albums you fall into, can’t explain, the more you listen the more you hear and feel. Can’t describe it really. A future classic right there.
I paused this to check out your claims. I bought it immediately based on the 1st song and one other. I got a bunch of 70's Hawkwind on LP. Great legendary band.
Great review Pete. Hawkwind are my favourite band I've got every studio album and quite a few live and other releases. The Future never Waits is a real throwback to the great albums of the 70's. 🤘🤘🤘
Thank you Pete for the insightful review. Excited to hear this album soon. Very happy to see that Mr. Brock is still going strong and can create a great album after all of their storied history.
Pretty much ignored Hawkwind in my younger days but after coming to SoT, revisited a lot of the albums mentioned on SoT for the past 3+ years. The ones really liked were some of the older albums that the prices on the market were just a bit too much. So speaking as one of those you mentioned near the end of this review, this will be the first Hawkwind album added to the collection. Some great stuff based on the excerpts listened to and looking forward to time with album - hopefully over the coming weekend. Thanks for your contagiously enthusiastic review on this, Pete, and including it in the new product episodes this week. Once again, proving that these weekly review shows remain a highlight of SoT programs each week. Thanks again.
A musical treasure indeed! FYI Thighpaulsandra is an electronic artist, mostly synthesizers and various sound manipulations. Noteworthy for his contributions to the amazing band Coil. His presence on this album might entice me to buy it. Thanks, Pete!
....and I have about 33 studio albums plus more live than I should have. Best band ever IMHO. The synths on this album are probably the best sounding and thighpaulsandra (Tim?) is a perfect fit. Drummer Richard Chadwick deserves a special mention as the percussion is really special. Dave doing a sterling job of keeping the old ship going and again IMHO the last decade has been a purple patch for the band. As for all bands of this age there are always detractors who hark back to some semi mythic glory day. Fair play but I prefer to go onwards. This is a fantastic album ...buy on sight...eh ...or stream.
Fantastic album from a band with serious pedigree. The jazzy stuff took me totally by surprise and boy do they pull it off ! Taking you on a journey sums it up perfectly ! Great review !
I have listened to a few of the early Hawkwind albums. I have no clue they were still going and have so many studio albums. I'm probably going to check this one out later on.
This is truly a great Hawkwind album, trippy, spacey and brave. After 35 albums you wouldn't think you hear something new but there it is, that touch of jazz is so cool. I hear a wonderful mix of old and new here. All we need is a naked woman on stage dancing (oops... that was the seventies wasn't it)
Hi Pete - had a listen to the Hawkwind CD and I thought it was pretty good, as you say probably their best for a very long time. They were one of the many prog bands I use to listen to in the UK in the mid / late 60's and early 70's. I now live in Australia, but that music just lives on and on lol. Cya Doug
I was waiting to hear your thoughts about this album, Pete. I think it is easily their best album since Blood Of The Earth or going back even further, Electric Tepee. I plan on playing the title track on my next radio show on Saturday.
Wait,35 studio albums? I am pretty sure there were more, are you including Hawklords albums? I have to check it all out,but anyway- the new Hawkwind album is always good news!
I rated their last album but boy this is a notch up again. The future never waits is 10 minutes of undiluted Space Rock Hawkwind. They Are So Easily Distracted - is this Hawkwind- yes with jazz screaming through which leads into a synth heaven across many of the remaining tracks. One of my albums of the year so far.
mmm just had a listen, now admittedly,i havent heard hawkwinds last few albums,my younger brothers much more in touch with what they do now ,as his psych folk rock proggy band play a lot of the same festies ,even though i introduced him to hawkwind, and bought all the albums, but i found this one a bit clean and synth heavy, tunes that should have been 2 min synth link tracks,go on for 10 mins.only 1 tune,3rd from end, sounded like hawkwind to me,some of it was pretty good, some of it,what i allready mentioned.maybe another listen.i recommend if you dont have it,space fusion odyssey by nik turner, like spare rock jazz fusion, feat billy cobham, steve hillage, john etheridge, chris poland, rick wakeman, robbie kreiger and more guesting, great album, overlooked in my opinion
It is a different album compared to others but it flows really well and there are some very outstanding tracks. It is over an hour long so just put your headphones on and let the music take over your life for a while.
The funny thins is that every Hawkwind album atleast from 2010 until now has all been hailed as "A return to form" - i dont get it, are they all better than the 90s or 80s? is return to form a definition as in "The Classic Years" (1970-1975 / 1970-1981) ?!?!?!
HAWKWIND became the dave brock band, after IN YOUR AREA.... brock/chadwick/keyboard player are ok....the bass playing and singing totally spoils 'FUTURE' which does have some good 'hawkwindy' moments and ideas on it....

Amazing band and still going strong

Pete thanks so much for keeping up with Hawkwind, one of my favorites of all time.
They Are So Easily Distracted is so good. Their best album in years in my opinion.

Man I'm glad that you said that the last track reminded you of ELO because I thought EXACTLY the same !! :)

Hmmm " oozing miasma" possibly the best description I have ever heard of Hawkwind going into the stratosphere.🤔🤔
mmm just had a listen, now admittedly,i havent heard hawkwinds last few albums,my younger brothers much more in touch with what they do now ,as his psych folk rock proggy band play a lot of the same festies ,even though i introduced him to hawkwind, and bought all the albums, but i found this one a bit clean and synth heavy, tunes that should have been 2 min synth link tracks,go on for 10 mins.only 1 tune,3rd from end, sounded like hawkwind to me,some of it was pretty good, some of it,what i allready mentioned.maybe another listen.i recommend if you dont have it,space fusion odyssey by nik turner, like spare rock jazz fusion, feat billy cobham, steve hillage, john etheridge, chris poland, rick wakeman, robbie kreiger and more guesting, great album, overlooked in my opinion

Ha! Thighpaulsandra used to play in Coil, check out his solo stuff, it’s really interesting; prog’s outer limits!
Must listen to this.
I’m going to get it Pete 🙈👌
i know thighpaulsandra played with julian cope back in the 90,s.
HAWKWIND
British institution.
I keep checking the channel to see if he is going to recognize Tina Turner. He already gave Gordon Lightfoot the cold shoulder.
HAWKWIND became the dave brock band, after IN YOUR AREA....
brock/chadwick/keyboard player are ok....the bass playing and singing totally spoils 'FUTURE' which does have some good 'hawkwindy' moments and ideas on it....
I thought that you meant to say Elegant Weapons
Listen to Outside of Time in headphones 👀👀👀
Wow. Ok. Pete. 4.5/5. 👍💯
A-W-E-S-O-M-E !!!!!!
Elegant weapons horns for a halo 😇
🎶 5 / 5 🎶
